Chapter 378 Could We Be Talking About Different Things?

Victoria remembered what Elodie had said.

After hesitating for a moment, she still couldn't bring herself to use that term of address and instead opted for a very ordinary one. "What's wrong with her leg?"

Although she didn't explicitly say who "she" referred to, Alexander knew exactly who she was asking about.

Alexander glanced at her. "It's probably because she hasn't walked for many years."

She quickly caught the key phrase.

Hasn't walked for many years?

Why hasn't she walked?

Originally, she had been hesitant about visiting her mother, but now, with everything piling up, she felt she had no choice but to go.

7 PM.

Victoria received a call from Marlowe.

Alexander was reading a finance book on the sofa. When he saw her return with a worried look after the call, he put down his book. "What's wrong?"

Victoria sat next to him, placing her hands on the edge of the sofa, sighed, and then turned to look at him.

"Marlowe left Rihegde," she said. "Yesterday she told me she was thinking about leaving, and today she's already gone."

Alexander continued, "That means she had planned it all along."

"I know," she said.

Alexander asked, "Then why do you look so worried?"

"Do you know what Grant told me when he called yesterday?" she asked him in return.

The man chuckled softly and said helplessly, "How would I know if you don't tell me?"

"He wants to make a bet with me. If he wins, I have to tell him Marlowe's whereabouts. If I win, he will give me 50% of the Scott Group's shares and never ask me about Marlowe again."

The man raised an eyebrow at her words. "That doesn't seem like a loss for you."

Indeed, it wasn't a loss for her. On the contrary, she might accidentally gain a valuable sum of money.

She frowned and replied, "So should I win or lose?"

If she lost, she didn't know Marlowe's whereabouts at the moment, so what would she tell Grant?

If she won, she wouldn't feel at ease holding those shares.

She was troubled.

Alexander raised his hand to rub the back of her head, gazing at her, and teased, "So, you think you can control winning and losing?"

"Not really, I'm just confident in myself," she said casually and confidently.

Alexander didn't doubt her. She always had a good sense of judgment, and her confidence was never unfounded; she truly had the ability to back it up.

After thinking for a while, she decided to win.

She really didn't know what to do.

But winning or losing wasn't something she could control. Since Grant had made such a request, he must have made ample preparations.

"Honey, why is Grant so generous to bet 50% of the Scott Group's shares with me?" she asked curiously. "He's willing to give up half of the Scott Group's shares, so why can't he admit that he has feelings for Marlowe?"

Alexander pondered for a few seconds before speaking, "Grant is the most deep-minded among us. Whether he genuinely intends to give up half of the shares is still uncertain."

Victoria said, "Right, you think so too. I didn't believe it at the time. I always felt that Grant was setting a trap for me."

Alexander smiled. "But you still agreed to the bet." He added, "At that time, you were already planning to tell him the truth, right? But you were bound by your promise to Marlowe to keep it a secret."

"You understand me best," she said. "But I didn't expect Marlowe to leave so quickly without even saying goodbye."

"Problems need to be solved by those who caused them," Alexander said, pulling her into his arms. "Their issues can't be resolved just by our intervention."

Victoria paused and said frankly, "But I think Grant still doesn't know how to solve this problem. Will he only understand when the kids are grown?"

"That's their own business. There's only so much you can do," Alexander said. "You should be concerned about me."

"What?" She looked up at him in confusion. "What's wrong with you?"

"I want..."

Victoria met his deep, affectionate eyes and frowned slightly. "Alexander, it's only seven o'clock. You're thinking about that already?"

Alexander was puzzled by her inexplicable remark.

Suddenly, he realized that she had misunderstood.

"What am I thinking about?" He chucked. "Tell me."

Victoria was speechless.

How was she supposed to say it?

"You know exactly what you're thinking about, and you still want me to say it!" She glared at him.

"I just meant I want to have something to eat. Mrs. Howard, are you thinking something else?" Alexander said slowly.

Victoria's face instantly turned red.

Alexander thought her surprised look was really adorable.

His deep, magnetic voice carried a hint of teasing, "Could it be that you were talking about something different from what I was?"
"No, you're overthinking it. I meant it's still early, and I'm not hungry yet," she retorted.

But the next second, her stomach let out a loud growl, and she felt incredibly embarrassed.

"Really?" Alexander's face lit up with a smile.

Victoria blushed and stubbornly said, "That wasn't my stomach."

"Alright, then it was mine," Alexander said with a laugh and a hint of resignation. "Mrs. Howard, let's go get something to eat."

Victoria smiled, "Okay."

While they were happily having dinner, Clara was crying and shouting at the police station, but no one responded to her.

Because she wasn't cooperating with the interrogation, the police couldn't do much, but the evidence was conclusive.

Elodie wanted to bail her out, but the conditions weren't met.

She called the Kennedy Mansion, only to be told that no one was home.

For a moment, Elodie didn't know what to do. She could only call the Smith Family for help.
