Chapter 47 How Dare You Be So Arrogant Without Money
The clerk came back with a fake smile.
Julia, still looking super smug, asked, "Done?"
"Sorry, Miss, your card doesn't have enough funds."
Julia was shocked. "No way, there's over two million dollars on this card."
The clerk smiled politely. "Miss, these rings cost eight million eight hundred eighty-eight thousand dollars."
"What? Eight million eight hundred eighty-eight thousand dollars?" Julia yelled, losing her cool.
Clara was also stunned by the price.
"Miss, these rings were designed by the famous Shirley and are one-of-a-kind," the clerk said with a hint of disdain.
Julia shut up immediately. She knew that designer.
"You don't recognize quality and don't have the funds," Lila said, mimicking Julia's earlier tone.
"Need a loan?" Lila crossed her arms, smirking.
"You two tricked me," Julia snapped, pointing at Lila and Victoria.
Lila rolled her eyes. "Wake up. We haven't done anything. We even let you have the rings. You, on the other hand, have been doing nothing but provoking us."
Lila sneered, "You said you wanted to buy them. We never forced you."
The clerk, regaining confidence, asked, "Miss, how would you like to pay?"
Julia deflated. She had never been so embarrassed. She only had a bit over two million dollars and thought the rings would be much cheaper.
She couldn't ask her dad for the money; he'd be furious.
Julia looked at Clara, pleading, "Clara, can you help me?"
Clara hadn't expected this. Lila, eyes full of mischief, smiled, "Clara, you're the chief perfumer at Kennedy Group. You get dividends every month. You wouldn't refuse to help your dear cousin, would you?"
Clara's eyes flashed with malice. Lila was setting her up. She had money, but eight million was a lot.
"Julia, it seems your friend isn't willing to help," Lila continued.
Julia, feeling the pressure, looked at Clara.
Clara's heart raced. She hadn't married Lucas yet and needed Julia's support.
She made a tough decision. "Julia, don't worry, I'll cover it. Consider it as if I'm buying it for myself. The custom rings Lucas and I ordered aren't ready yet. We can wear these for now; Lucas likes this style too."
Clara pulled out a card from her bag and handed it to the clerk with a gentle smile. "Use this card."
The clerk took it and went to process the payment.
Julia, holding Clara's hand, said, "Clara, you're the best. My cousin Lucas will only marry you, and someone else shouldn't even dream about it," glaring at Victoria.
Victoria stayed indifferent, which frustrated Clara and Julia even more.
Julia kept flattering Clara, not realizing Clara felt awful about spending over eight million dollars. Despite being favored in the Kennedy family and the chief perfumer, most of Clara's money went to her mom. Without shares in the Kennedy Group, she'd be looked down upon when she married Lucas. She was trying hard to get her dad and grandpa to reclaim shares from Victoria, but Victoria was unyielding.
"Miss, here are your rings and your card," the clerk said, handing them over respectfully.
Clara, having just spent a fortune, had no mood to stay. She took the items and left, with Julia following.
Lila watched them leave, grinning. "That was satisfying. I'll use this trick again if I see them."
Victoria chuckled. "Looking forward to the third time."
Lila was surprised. "Third time? You've done this before?"
Victoria smiled mysteriously and said nothing.
Lila got it. "If that's the case, those two must have something wrong with their brains."
"They just can't keep their cool," Victoria said calmly.
Victoria picked out two bracelets, and they left, each wearing one as matching friendship bracelets. Though she had plenty of jewelry at home, she preferred keeping things simple and rarely wore them. Most were for collection, which Lila often said was "a bit of a waste."
They happily continued shopping for bags, clothes, and food, forgetting the earlier drama.
Meanwhile, Clara was in a foul mood. After leaving the jewelry store, she made an excuse about feeling unwell. Back at the Kennedy Family, she threw a fit, locked herself in her room, and tried calling Ethan again, but still couldn't reach him.
While Victoria was enjoying her shopping spree, the North Courtyard was undergoing major renovations. Its original owner, Victoria, had already put it out of her mind.
"Didn't you say Alexander was moving in with you today?" Lila asked while they were sitting in a coffee shop.
"Yeah, the apartment's big enough, and there's a guest room for him," Victoria replied.
Lila stayed silent.
