Chapter 242 The Reason for Resignation

"What?" Wesley's jaw practically hit the floor. He gawked at Victoria, eyes wide like saucers. "Ms. Kennedy, you gotta be kidding me. This isn't funny at all."

Not only was it not funny, it was mind-blowing.

He never thought he'd amount to much, just wanted to be a straight-up, honest worker.

Meeting Victoria and landing the assistant gig already felt like hitting the jackpot.

Just five minutes ago, Victoria buzzed him on the intercom. He figured it was the usual work stuff.

He never expected Victoria to drop a bombshell. "Wesley, I want you to be the CEO of Horizon Group."

Victoria watched Wesley's freaked-out face with a calm vibe, like she knew he'd react this way.

She leaned back in her chair, all chill, elbow on the desk, chin in her palm, fingers tapping a little beat on the desk. It was kinda soothing actually, but Wesley was too freaked to notice.

She raised an eyebrow and gave him a look, asking, "Do I look like someone who jokes around?"

Wesley shook his head fast. "No, you don't."

He'd been her assistant for five years and never saw her crack a joke.

And joking about making him CEO sounded ridiculous.

He was a few years older than Victoria, but her style and aura were way beyond her twenty-four years. Most women her age were just getting started in their careers.

Five years ago, she was only nineteen, and he was twenty-five.

Back then, he was a manager at some company but quit for some reason.

The day after he quit, Victoria found him at a bar where he was drowning his sorrows. She was super direct, saying, "Mr. Miller, wanna work at my company?"

He was floored, partly 'cause Victoria was drop-dead gorgeous, and partly 'cause she was offering him a job at a bar? Plus, she knew his last name was Miller, which he didn't think was that famous.

"Do you know me?" he asked.

She then listed his achievements in her cool voice, and he realized Victoria had done her homework.

They chatted in a noisy booth at the bar.

She told him a lot—how she found him through a headhunting site, why she wanted to hire him, his strengths and weaknesses, and even gave him some career advice. It felt like brainwashing, but he was sold.

Even though she was kinda vague, her business smarts were sharp, her thinking dynamic and mature, and it all felt real.

After he agreed, he asked her, "How old are you?"

Victoria, who seemed like a cold and beautiful girl, answered, "Nineteen."

But her way of talking and her thoughts were nothing like a nineteen-year-old. She had no girlishness, just maturity.

Who would've thought he'd be convinced by a nineteen-year-old?

After that, she handed him over to Joshua, and he only emailed her.

He watched a company on the brink of bankruptcy come back to life and grow under her leadership in a year. He couldn't help but admire her sharp business tactics and mind. She was so young back then. No one would believe it.

Through these years, Horizon Group had become a solid company under her leadership and even a well-known perfume brand both domestically and internationally.

But now, she wanted to step down?

"Ms. Kennedy, can I ask why?" Wesley asked.

There had to be a reason for her stepping down.

Victoria looked at him and answered seriously, "No reason, I just don't wanna run the company anymore."

Wesley was left speechless.
