Chapter 61 The Gift She Gave Was Pretty Good

Lila: [I’m only 24, but my mom really wants me to get married right now.]

Lila: [Are you coming back for Halloween?]

After sending the message, Lila realized she shouldn't have asked Marlowe that, but Marlowe had already replied.

Maelowe: [No, Grant said I’m not allowed to step into the Scott family’s house.]

Lila felt very awkward and deeply apologetic: [Marlowe, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked you that.]

Marlowe replied generously:

[No need to apologize, everyone in the Scott family knows about this, it’s not a secret.]

[Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’ve gotten used to it over the years.]

[Besides, there’s nothing to hide from you two. I’m actually happy to chat with you guys, it’s nice to talk occasionally.]

[But I have to warn you, don’t settle to marriage. If you have to settle, at least find a man who loves you, it won’t be as bad. Don’t be like me.]

Victoria: [I agree with Marlowe!]

Lila: [Marlowe, why don’t you divorce Grant? You’re so great, there must be many guys who like you. Grant doesn’t deserve you.]

Marlowe: [Actually, you’re right. I’ll do that when I get the chance.]

Victoria: [Support.]

Lila: [Same here.]

The three of them started chatting, mostly complaining about Grant. Lila and Marlowe did most of the complaining, while Victoria chimed in occasionally.

Victoria realized that Marlowe wasn’t as dull as she seemed the last two times they met; she was actually quite interesting.

Grant had just come back from outside. As he stepped into the hall, he saw Marlowe’s petite figure sitting on the living room sofa, head down, tapping away on her phone, with a smile on her face.

This was the second time in five years he had seen her smile like this. Her smile was like the warm sun in summer. She was already beautiful, and her smile made her even more charming, completely different from her usual dull and listless expression.

Marlowe was so engrossed in the pleasant conversation that she didn’t notice Grant standing at the door.

It wasn’t until she heard someone say, "Mr. Scott," that she looked up and saw the tall and slender Grant standing at the entrance of the hall. Wasn’t that Grant? When did he come back? How long had he been watching?

These were the only questions in Marlowe’s mind.

Grant watched as her smile froze and slowly faded into fear and indifference the moment she saw him.

Grant gave her a cold look, then turned and went upstairs. A few minutes later, he came down and left.

Marlowe sat on the sofa, stunned, watching him come and go.

She was surprised to find that he didn’t warn her with cold words or mock her.

'Was this really Grant?' Marlowe thought.

Marlowe suddenly felt uncomfortable that he didn’t mock her.

It was David who had called him. Marlowe blinked and asked David in a daze, "David, why didn’t he scold me today?"

David was also puzzled by Marlowe’s question. Who demands to be scolded every day? Only Marlowe, apparently.

David smiled kindly and said, "Actually, Mr. Scott cares about you."

Marlowe heard this and felt no emotional fluctuation. She forced a smile and said to David, "David, I’m not stupid."

David fell silent.

He felt a bit guilty for saying that.

Meanwhile, Grant was sitting in his private car heading back to Ridge.

On the other side.

Vertex Holdings Group.

Victoria had been on the top floor for three hours since she arrived at 2 PM. It was now 5 PM.

Everyone was curious and wanted to gossip.

Someone in the group chat brought up a topic: [Mrs. Howard has been in the CEO’s office for three hours. What do you think they’re doing?]

The gossip lovers quickly chimed in.

Within a minute, someone from the secretary’s office came out to clarify:[Don’t get the wrong idea, Mr. Howard went to a meeting a long time ago.]

[Mrs. Howard is alone in the office.]

Victoria was currently using Alexander’s computer.

The screen was filled with flashing symbols. Victoria’s eyes were fixed on the screen, her fingers flying over the keyboard.

Twenty minutes later, a line of text appeared on the screen: [Device installed.]

Then, the computer screen returned to normal, leaving no trace.

Meanwhile, the programmers on the 19th floor were staring dumbfounded at their computers, exchanging bewildered glances.

"Should we tell Howard about this?" one asked.

"Of course, or you could get fired!" the other said.

Alexander had just finished his meeting when Marcus hurried over, looking serious. "Mr. Howard, half an hour ago, the tech department reported that the company’s internal system was attacked by a hacker. They couldn’t control their computers at all, as if they were malfunctioning. But then they found out the hacker wasn’t trying to steal data but to strengthen our firewall."

This seemed like a good thing, but it was also terrifying. They didn’t know who the person was, friend or foe, and this person was powerful enough to control all the computers in the tech department.

"Afterward, the tech department checked everything again and confirmed that nothing was lost, and the new firewall wasn’t a virus," Marcus continued.

Alexander narrowed his eyes and asked in a cold voice, "Did you trace the IP address?"

Marcus replied nervously, "No, the tech department said the hacker left no trace."

Alexander frowned and ordered coldly, "Get Hades’ team involved. Hire him,or just take him out."

This was a serious matter. Without finding out the truth, they couldn’t be at ease. Vertex Holdings Group had too many secrets, and this person could control all the tech department’s computers without leaving a trace. There was no guarantee they wouldn’t steal secrets next time, so they had to be found.

"Yes, Mr. Howard."

Victoria had no idea she had angered Alexander, who was now determined to eliminate her.

She had just wanted to give him a gift to repay his recent kindness. She didn’t know what to give, so she decided to give him a new firewall she had recently developed.

She thought it was a great gift, something money couldn’t buy.
