Chapter 473 Complicated Emotions
"Marlowe, I know you liked Grant first," Abigail had said, "but I realized I liked him too. He's exactly my type - handsome, wealthy, and powerful. You've always had your parents' love, while I've had nothing. So don't blame me for confessing to him first. And thanks for all those notes you kept about him - they helped me understand him faster."
After discovering Abigail's deliberate betrayal, Marlowe was furious, but she chose silence.
After all, Abigail and Grant were already together.
She couldn't act like a madwoman about it. That wasn't who she was.
If Abigail had beaten her to it, she could only blame her own hesitation and timidity.
Besides, she had no right to be angry with Abigail, who hadn't interfered in any existing relationship. Abigail had simply confessed first and won Grant's heart.
Someone as proud as Grant wouldn't have agreed to date Abigail unless his feelings were genuine.
In the days that followed, her connection to Abigail meant inevitable encounters with him.
Through these meetings, she witnessed firsthand how Grant doted on Abigail.
No one knew the pain behind her smile as she watched them display their affection.
Eventually, she began avoiding them altogether.
She would never appear anywhere they might be, except for absolutely necessary occasions.
Fortunately, she was in her junior year of college and could use graduate school preparation as an excuse to keep busy, avoiding many potential encounters.
Yet because Caspian was fond of her, she still visited the Scott Villa weekly to play chess and chat with him.
Before Grant and Abigail became a couple, Marlowe had deliberately chosen times when Grant would be at the villa. Afterward, she meticulously planned to avoid him.
She knew his schedule at the Scott Villa better than anyone.
Complications arose because of her friendship with Lila, who attended the same university.
Lila was a freshman while Marlowe was a junior.
As Lila's uncle, Grant regularly supervised her education.
He visited campus periodically, and Lila always insisted that Marlowe join them, along with Michelle.
Additionally, being Abigail's sister while he was Abigail's boyfriend meant Grant naturally paid extra attention to Marlowe.
This made everything even more uncomfortable for her.
Then, just after completing her senior year exams, Marlowe received a call from her mother: Abigail and Grant were getting married because Abigail was pregnant.
Though a year had passed and she thought she'd prepared herself emotionally, the news of their impending marriage still wounded her deeply.
"Victoria, when they first got together, I could handle it," Marlowe confessed. "I even foolishly thought that if they ever broke up, I might still have a chance. But when I heard they were getting married, that Abigail was pregnant... my heart shattered completely. I couldn't even bring myself to attend their wedding. I immediately applied for early graduation to study abroad."
"A week after receiving my graduate exam results, the university approved my early departure. But then Abigail took my car out and had that accident."
In the adjacent room, Grant listened to Marlowe's account.
Memories gradually resurfaced in his mind.
Abigail's words echoed in his thoughts.
Abigail had claimed she'd been attracted to him since she was sixteen, secretly admiring him.
She had pursued him, and indeed, she seemed to understand him well.
He had eventually yielded to her persistent advances.
But now he realized everything she knew about him had come from Marlowe—even the claim about liking him since sixteen was Marlowe's story.
His emotions churned with this revelation.
Abigail's pregnancy had been unexpected.
That night, he'd been drunk from a business dinner, unaware of what transpired.
He awoke in a hotel room with her beside him.
A month later, she announced her pregnancy.
Before this incident, marriage hadn't been on his mind. Though rumors circulated about his relationship with Abigail, he'd never addressed them, seeing no need.
Had he truly wanted to marry her, he would have made an official announcement.
Alexander and Owen sat nearby, simply listening.
"So Marlowe had planned to go abroad all along," Owen remarked with a click of his tongue. "Instead, she ended up marrying you and becoming your hidden wife for five years, giving up her graduate studies."
His comment earned him a cold glare.
