Chapter 113 Do You Care About Me?

"Just don't come at five. If the door's closed, we'll have to wait till tomorrow," Evelyn said coolly, heading out first.

Edward stood there, throat tight.

'Three years ago, we planned to get our marriage license. But an urgent meeting called by the project manager of Yatuok, kept me at work. After the meeting, an important guest showed up, and by the time I was done, I realized I forgot to reschedule our court visit.'

The memory stung.

'When I finally got to the courthouse, it was almost empty. Evelyn was there, looking so fragile and lonely. I never thought she'd wait all day. I never thought anyone could be that stubborn. I wanted to apologize, but Byron's pressure, my dislike for a contractual marriage, and Nicole's recent departure held me back.'

"Edward, you finally came!"

'Even now, when I close my eyes, I can still see Evelyn's warm smile. Back then, I didn't get what could make her lose hope in me. Now I know. It was the abandonment that broke her heart.'

Edward felt a pang of shame, his face stiff as he followed Evelyn through the door.

"Are they here to get their marriage license? They look perfect together!"

"But they don't look happy."

"The girl’s upset. Didn't you see he was late? I'd be mad too if someone was late for getting our marriage license!"

At the divorce counter, Evelyn and Edward sat side by side, handing over their documents.

The clerk looked at them, clearing his throat, "Are you sure you don't want to reconsider? It's not easy to come this far together."

"I don't lack money, and neither does he. We have a housekeeper and a secretary. There's nothing difficult about it," Evelyn said coldly.

Edward pressed his lips together, silent.

The clerk also fell silent.

Evelyn glanced at her watch, "Please hurry, I have to be somewhere."

"I see you don't have children. Do you need to divide any assets?" the clerk asked.

Evelyn answered coldly, "No."

Edward stayed silent. 'I wanted to give her some, but she didn't want it.'

"Then, please sign here."

The clerk handed over two forms. Evelyn signed quickly, noticing Edward hesitating.

His fingers were trembling uncontrollably.

Evelyn frowned slightly.

'Edward, why are your hands shaking? Just sign it. Don't act reluctant now.'

"Edward, hurry up and sign. Is there a word you don't know how to write?"

Sweat appeared on Edward's forehead. He gripped his right forearm with his left hand, but he still couldn't stop the trembling.

Suddenly, the pen fell to the ground.

Evelyn noticed something was off and focused on Edward, scrutinizing him closely.

He looked haggard, his black suit dusty, and his collar and lapels torn.

'What has he been doing? Why does he look so disheveled?'

Full of doubts, Evelyn bent down, picked up the pen, and pushed it in front of him.

Finally, both forms were signed, and the divorce was finalized.

"Wish you both a happy life apart."

Leaving the courthouse, Evelyn felt a mix of emotions. The long ordeal had dulled the heartache from when Edward forced her to sign the divorce papers. Now, she mostly felt relief.

She had once lived for love, confining herself in a cocoon. Now, back with the Taylor family, she aimed to focus on her career and quietly amass wealth.

"Edward, I have something to do. I'll be going now. Take care."

Evelyn turned to walk down the stairs gracefully.

"Evelyn, wait."

Before the words were out, Evelyn heard a dull thud behind her.

She turned sharply, gasping in shock!

Edward had fallen heavily down the steps, lying on the ground with a pained expression.

Though it was only four or five steps, falling so suddenly was quite painful!

"Edward!"

Evelyn hurried over to help him up, noticing that his arm was trembling even more than before!

"You've been acting strange since earlier. What's going on?!"

"It's nothing," Edward said, sweating profusely, unwilling to reveal the truth.

"Tell me the truth! Quickly!" Evelyn was getting anxious, her tone carrying her unique assertiveness.

Edward was in pain all over, his head spinning. Seeing her so worried about him, a warmth surged in his chest.

"Do you care about me?"

Evelyn's lips twitched, and she laughed in exasperation, "Even if a dog fell on the side of the road, I couldn't just ignore it. You're a living being, I have no reason not to care."

Edward's pale face darkened a few shades, and he slowly pushed her away, "Keep your sympathy. I don't need your help."

"Edward, you should go to the hospital. Losing balance for no reason might mean there's something wrong with your cerebellum," Evelyn said seriously.

"Evelyn, are you holding a grudge against me because of the divorce? So you're taking the chance to insult me?" Edward looked at her coldly, his thin lips tight.

"You're overthinking it. I'm neither that petty nor that idle."

Evelyn secretly laughed, feeling Edward was truly unreasonable, "And you got it wrong. I couldn't be happier about the divorce. As they say, parting ways for a better future. Since you can take care of yourself, I won't worry. Keep your balance, I'm leaving."

Edward felt a surge of anger, his eyes burning red.

As soon as Evelyn let go, Edward lost his balance again, his strong waist collapsing onto her.

In an instant, they were tightly pressed together.

Evelyn's heaving chest unintentionally pressed against his, and his breathing grew heavier. His trembling hand couldn't help but climb to her slender waist wrapped in a stunning dress.

The mind and the body, one of them was always out of control.

"Get your filthy hand off me!"

Evelyn's beautiful eyes were sharp, and she gritted her teeth, "Or I'll chop it off and feed it to my pet as a chew toy!"
