Chapter 413 "I'm very sorry, we did our best."

"Aaron, the trouble I've caused this time, the debt I've incurred, I can never repay it in my lifetime."

Saying this, Evelyn closed her eyes in pain and cried uncontrollably in Landon's arms.

It wasn't the first time they had seen Evelyn cry.

In fact, Evelyn had cried quite a bit growing up. To outsiders, Evelyn was an arrogant queen. But only they knew that Evelyn was just an ordinary girl who needed love and was very fragile.

But this time, it was different.

They felt that the blow Evelyn had received was extraordinary, and it might take a long time for her to recover from this emotional pain.

On the way here, Simon and Aaron had already understood the whole story.

William was seriously injured, but at least he was alive and had a chance of recovery.

But the girl named Kimberly, when she was sent to the ICU, had almost no vital signs left.

Evelyn nearly knelt to beg the doctors to save Kimberly's life.

They all silently prayed, hoping that the brave and pitiful Kimberly could survive.

"Landon, I heard William was also seriously injured. Have you informed the Flynn family?" Simon asked with concern.

Landon's expression darkened slowly, "Before William went into surgery, he repeatedly told me to keep this from his parents. His parents are old, and Isla has always been in poor health. If they knew about this, they might not be able to handle it and could fall ill suddenly."

Simon replied, "But William's injury will take at least a few months to heal, right? You can hide it for a day or two, but you can't keep it a secret for long!"

"Let's wait until the surgery is over and everything is stable before telling the Flynn family. It will be easier for them to accept then," Ulysses suggested seriously.

"Are you all here?" Peter came running over in a hurry.

The Taylor family's sons had finally gathered. They were all capable in their own fields, and now standing together, Evelyn could almost command the wind and rain.

But even with all of them here, they couldn't comfort Evelyn.

How could they?

A fragile young girl, shot while trying to save Evelyn. She witnessed Kimberly falling in front of her. Anyone with a conscience would be overwhelmed with guilt and unable to extricate themselves.

"Peter, weren't you supposed to go to the police station to give a statement? Why are you here?"

Before Ulysses could finish his sentence, he suddenly froze.

At some point, Edward's tall figure had been standing a few steps away, silently watching, not disturbing the family's harmony.

Bart stood silently behind him, looking at this group of people, and couldn't help but feel a bit worried for Edward.

Even if Edward and Evelyn reconciled, the days ahead wouldn't be easy.

They looked at Edward, their expressions somewhat complicated.

Evelyn rubbed her red eyes and walked heavily towards Edward.

Edward watched her approach, his heart pounding like a drum.

"Are you okay? Did you get your wound treated?" His thin lips parted slightly, his voice hoarse.

Evelyn didn't answer his question, just met his worried eyes, "Kimberly is still in the emergency room."

"She'll be okay. I'll wait with you, we'll wait together."

Edward comforted her gently, his fingers curling into his palms, suppressing the urge to hold her.

"Why did you come tonight?" Evelyn asked softly, her long lashes wet with tears.

"It was Kimberly. She met me at Riverside Villa this afternoon and told me about your meeting tonight."

Edward told her everything, "I was worried, so I followed to check on you."

He had to admit, his worry was justified.

Evelyn thought of the shocking secret Kimberly had whispered to her before losing consciousness, and her nerves tightened, trembling even more.

Should she tell Edward?

She touched the pocket of her shirt, where Kimberly's broken phone lay quietly.

Edward furrowed his brows slightly, immediately taking off his suit jacket and draping it over her shoulders, wrapping her delicate body.

She didn't resist, her eyes vacant.

At this moment, her mind was only on Kimberly and William. She had no energy for anything else.

"Did they catch the person?" Evelyn asked softly.

"They're still on a full-scale manhunt. The police and my people have blocked all the major routes in Mugden. Even if he had wings, I'd shoot him down from the sky. He won't get away."

Edward's breathing was heavy, his eyes flashing with anger, "Illegal use of firearms, malicious injury, attempted murder, he will pay with his life."

Evelyn's mind replayed the moment Kimberly was shot, blood filling her vision.

She took a sharp breath, covering her ears with her hands, eyes tightly shut.

Edward knew this was a stress reaction, his heart aching as if pierced by countless needles. He couldn't help but open his arms, slowly and carefully pulling her into his warm embrace.

"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid." He patted her trembling back, his jawline tightening.

In front of Evelyn, he was just an ordinary man. He could feel pain and wanted to cry.

Evelyn's brothers watched the scene, their expressions grim.

Aaron frowned deeply, just about to step forward, but was held back by Landon and Ulysses.

"Aaron, I know you don't like Edward, and I don't either."

Ulysses sighed, "But we have to admit, if it weren't for him tonight, we might not have seen Evelyn."

Aaron's eyes widened in shock.

"They were married for three years, after all. There's still some feelings there." Ulysses put his hands in his pockets, smacking his lips.

Simon, Peter, and Aaron were silent.

Landon could hardly believe Ulysses was speaking up for Edward!

Back when Evelyn and Edward had a secret marriage, he was the angriest, almost flying to Mugden to blow up the Wellington Group's building!

It showed that although Ulysses was a man of passion and a hot temper, he had his own standards of judgment when it came to major issues.

At this moment, the ICU doors opened.

Evelyn rushed to the doctor.

Edward followed closely, his intense gaze never leaving her.

"Doctor! How is she? How is she?" Evelyn's eyes were wide open, bloodshot, shining with a desperate light.

The doctor's surgical gown and gloves were covered in Kimberly's blood.

Everyone else gathered around, anxiously waiting for the doctor's words.

"The bullet penetrated her organs, and she lost too much blood. Honestly, by the time she was brought in, it was already too late."

The doctor sighed helplessly, shaking his head, "Ms. Taylor, I'm sorry, we did our best."
