Chapter 340 Scandal
Hospital, VIP ward.
Gilbert lay on the bed in a hospital gown, his lips pale, looking so weak that it evoked pity.
"Mr. Alexander, why were you so foolish!"
Curtis stood by the bed, still terrified. "Do you know that you were almost trampled by that horse? If you had been, you could have died on the spot, and all your efforts on Aurora Isle would have been in vain!"
Gilbert slowly opened his eyes and lifted the corner of his lips. "Curtis, it seems you really are worried about me."
Curtis was startled, tears welling up in his eyes. "Mr. Alexander. Mr. Alexander, your health is the most important thing. You must take care of yourself!"
"For Evelyn, I'm willing to do anything." Gilbert took a deep breath. Mentioning Evelyn, his usually cold eyes softened. "And I also want to prove to Evelyn that I'm willing to risk my life for her, just like Edward. In the future, when she needs help, she won't think of Edward first; she'll think of me."
The second sentence was truly thought-provoking.
Curtis caught the deeper meaning and nodded grimly. "You're right. How can a man like Edward, with his promiscuous lifestyle, be worthy of Ms. Taylor? Ms. Taylor is smart; she won't fall into the same trap twice, right?"
Gilbert's eyes darkened, saying nothing.
At that moment, his phone vibrated on the pillow.
He glanced at the screen but didn't reply before the door to the ward opened.
"Gilbert, are you awake?"
Hearing Evelyn's voice, Gilbert quickly tucked his phone under the pillow, his lips curling into a gentle smile.
Gilbert said gently, "Evelyn, I told you not to worry about me. I'm fine."
Evelyn walked into the ward, looking at Gilbert's pale, fragile face. She felt a pang of discomfort in her heart.
After all, he had become like this to save her.
"I also said I would take full responsibility for your injury." Evelyn stood in front of him, her tone gentle.
Gilbert felt warmth in his chest, his eyes slightly reddening.
"Ms. Taylor, you fell too. Are you hurt?" Curtis asked with concern.
"It's nothing serious. The main issue is Gilbert's broken arm, fractured ribs, and five external injuries. He needs to stay in the hospital to rest." Evelyn had some scrapes herself, but she didn't care and calmly advised Gilbert.
Gilbert chuckled lightly. "Evelyn, I don't need to stay in the hospital. I know my own body."
Evelyn complained. "Why you men are so stubborn? Edward had major brain surgery and didn't stay in the hospital either! Is the hospital toxic, or can you not afford the hospital bills?"
As soon as she finished speaking, she froze and clenched her fingers.
She didn't know why she suddenly thought of Edward. Memories of him would flood her mind like a tide, and she couldn't resist.
Gilbert's heart tightened, suppressing the rising jealousy. His pale lips twitched. "Evelyn, it seems you really care about Mr. Wellington. No matter when or where you always think of him. It shows how important he is to you."
Evelyn took a deep breath, her eyes cold as she looked at him. "Do you want to hear the truth?"
Gilbert's chest felt tight, and he pressed his lips together.
Evelyn said honestly, "Yes, he is very important, you're right."
Facing Evelyn's honesty, Gilbert felt a rush of blood explode in his chest, his hands gripping the edge of the bed tightly.
Evelyn replied, "Edward and I were married for three years, but I've known him for much longer than that. Far longer than you can imagine."
Evelyn's tone was calm as if he was chatting with a friend, but she couldn't deny that her heart still ached, this pain spreading through her body. "There was a time when I had nothing in my life but him."
She continued, "When he divorced me, it felt like he ripped my heart out, leaving a void that could never be filled, like an irreparable disability. If it were you, could you ignore it? Could you pretend it never happened?"
"But don't think that Edward is the only one for me in this lifetime." Evelyn waved her hand nonchalantly, the sadness in her eyes fleeting. "Life goes on, I just need some time."
Gilbert said resolutely, "Evelyn, no matter how long it takes, I'm willing to wait for you."
Gilbert struggled to sit up, but Evelyn quickly held him down.
Evelyn said, "Gilbert! You're a patient now, don't move!"
Gilbert promised, "Ten years, twenty years, a lifetime, I'll wait. I'll wait for you to heal, to recover, to see me."
Gilbert's pale lips trembled as he grabbed her soft hand and squeezed her fingertips red.
"Let go, don't do this!" Evelyn quickly pulled her hand away.
Gilbert, still weak, was shaken and almost fell off the bed!
Curtis shouted, "Mr. Alexander, be careful!"
Curtis quickly supported him and cast a pleading look at Evelyn. "Ms. Taylor, I beg you, considering Mr. Alexander's serious injuries for your sake, could you show him a bit more care? Just a little?"
"Curtis, forget it. Don't make things difficult for Ms. Taylor." Gilbert clutched his chest and coughed softly, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "She's not wrong. It's me, I'm the one asking too much."
Evelyn furrowed her brows but said nothing.
At that moment, someone's phone rang in the room.
Then another.
And another.
All three of their phones were ringing.
Evelyn felt a wave of confusion. Two phones ringing at the same time could be a coincidence, but three was not.
She took out her phone and looked at the screen.
Twitter notification:
[Edward and Jessica's Secret Affair Exposed]
[Edward and Jessica Caught in Hotel Rendezvous, Includes Video + Photos]
Evelyn stared at the screen, her eyes turning red, her heart sinking into a deep, icy abyss.
"Ms. Taylor, Mr. Alexander, what is this trending topic?" Curtis exclaimed as he scrolled through his screen.
Gilbert remained expressionless, his long lashes hiding a flicker of malice in his eyes.
Evelyn said in a hurry, "Gilbert, I have something to do. I'll come back to see you later."
Evelyn stiffly turned around, her steps heavy as she walked towards the door, her thin shoulders trembling slightly.
"Evelyn!" Gilbert called out urgently.
Evelyn paused, taking a deep breath.
Gilbert replied without hesitation"No matter what happens, I'll always be by your side. Anyone in this world might betray you, but I, Gilbert, will never betray you!"
Evelyn slammed the bathroom door shut and on the last toilet seat. She was biting her lips and frantically scrolling through the trending topics and comments.
Large beads of sweat fell onto the glaring screen.
[I told you, men will always cheat! Edward was rumored to defend Evelyn multiple times, and now he's with Jessica. How disgusting!]
[Certified: The Ultimate Scumbag!]
[It's all fake. I'm telling you, Edward just wants to latch onto the Taylor family.]
[Edward doesn't need to cling to Evelyn like that; he's wealthy himself.]
[Who would hate having too much money?]
Evelyn's eyes grew cold as she slowly raised her hand. She was clutching her collar and pressed down hard, but she couldn't suppress the pain tearing her heart in two.
[But seriously, Jessica doesn't compare to Evelyn.]
At that moment, Landon's call came in.
It rang several times before Evelyn composed herself and answered.
"Evelyn? Evelyn? Are you listening?" Landon's voice was full of concern, calling out to her.
"Landon," Evelyn whispered.
"Evelyn, where are you now?"
"In Mugden."
"Evelyn, you must have seen Edward's trending topic, right?" Landon asked tentatively.
"I saw it."
Landon asked, "Feeling bad?"
"No. Why should I feel bad?"
Evelyn chuckled lightly, her eyes red. "Jessica is Eric's only sister. If they get together, it would be a family alliance. With the Clark Group backing him, Edward's future will be much easier."
Landon's voice deepened. "Evelyn, I want to hear your true feelings."
"That is my true feeling." Evelyn clenched her fist so tightly that her knuckles hurt.
"You were married to Edward for three years. With your thirteen years of knowing him, do you think he would do something as vulgar as meeting Jessica in a hotel room at night?"
Landon reasonably questioned. "If he were a man driven by lust, he and Nicole's child would be walking by now. You were married for three years; how could he not touch you? Don't you think there's something off here?"
He added, "Also, I found out that there were a lot of reporters outside the hotel room, almost as if they knew something would happen and were lying in wait. This all seems like a setup."
Evelyn's heart trembled, but she still coldly replied, "Even if it was a setup, wasn't it his choice to fall into it? Even if Jessica set him up, if he ignored it, if he didn't go to the hotel and that room, could Jessica have dragged him there? Could those reporters have taken those photos?"
Landon was silent.
Evelyn continued without any emotion, "Edward still gave her the opportunity; otherwise, none of this would have happened."
Landon persuaded, "Evelyn, I think you should listen to Edward's explanation."
Evelyn replied coldly, "There's no need."
Evelyn's throat tightened, her gaze empty, her dark eyes filled with a deep sense of desolation. "Edward and I ended a long time ago. Whoever he's with now doesn't matter; it's his freedom. I have no right to interfere."
With that, she hung up the phone.
Not two seconds later, another call came in.
It was Edward.
