Chapter 502 Jessica Apologizes to Evelyn
The crowd was puzzled.
"Did Jessica hit herself?"
"Her face is swollen. Did she really go that hard on herself?"
Jessica's face turned pale instantly, and even her swollen cheeks were white. "Evelyn, what nonsense are you talking about? Am I crazy? Did I hit myself?"
"I think you are crazy." Evelyn shook her head and shrugged. "Not only are you crazy, but you also scared me. I didn't ask you for emotional damages, and now you're trying to frame me? Just because you're from the Clark family, you think you can slander me?"
The crowd was in an uproar!
Flashlights went off wildly on Jessica's pale face!
"The eldest daughter of the Taylor family should be beyond reproach, right? She has been enthusiastic about charity and public welfare, and even helped the poor servant from the Wellington family with a funeral. She wouldn't falsely accuse Jessica, would she?"
"Even if Ms. Taylor did hit someone, there must be a reason, right?"
"Maybe it was out of jealousy, but hitting someone is still wrong! I have reservations about Evelyn's character!"
Evelyn was really tired of this low-level scheming among women. If Jessica wanted to plot against her, couldn't she use some higher-level tactics?
The innocent would be proven innocent. Being misunderstood didn't matter to her; she didn't care.
Jessica's swollen face had nothing to do with Evelyn.
Just as Evelyn was about to leave the scene, anxious shouts came from outside the crowd.
"Jessica! What happened to you? Who bullied you?"
The crowd made way as Maurice led the Clark family members, rushing over with bodyguards.
Jessica's eyes were filled with tears, her lips trembling with grief.
Seeing her daughter's disheveled hair and swollen cheeks, and then seeing Evelyn looking down with a cold, mocking expression, Sophia naturally assumed that Evelyn had bullied her daughter.
"Someone, help Jessica up!"
At Maurice's command, the bodyguards rushed forward, forming a human wall to keep the reporters away.
"Jessica!" Sophia immediately went forward to hold Jessica, glaring at Evelyn with hatred. "Ms. Taylor! If you have any grievances, come to me. Why bully my daughter?"
"Sophia, don't get upset because of your health. I'm fine." Jessica even tried to comfort her mother sensibly.
It was really heart-wrenching to watch.
At this moment, the Taylor family members also arrived, causing the scene to become chaotic.
Jessica's clumsy and dirty tactics had alarmed both families, escalating the conflict between them.
"Mr. Taylor, your daughter has quite a temper, daring to hit someone." Maurice, leaning on his cane, looked coldly at Charlie, his tone full of anger. "I can see you really spoil her, but everyone's child is important to them. Your Evelyn is, and Jessica is my most important person! Today, you and Evelyn must give me an explanation!"
The Clark family was not to be trifled with!
Fortunately, the opponent was Evelyn from the Taylor family. If it were someone else, they wouldn't stand a chance!
Landon stared at Jessica with a gloomy expression, making her scared and cling to Sophia.
Joyce let go of Charlie's arm and quickly stepped forward to hold Evelyn's hand tightly. "Evelyn, are you okay? Did you get hurt?"
This question made the faces of the Clark mother and daughter look grim!
"I'm fine, Joyce. Don't worry." Evelyn comforted her gently, afraid she might be scared.
"Evelyn, I don't believe you would hit someone. We know your character is upright. Even if others don't believe it, we do." Joyce turned her cold gaze to Jessica's face.
Charlie pursed his lips tightly, his handsome brows furrowed deeply, looking at his daughter with a complex expression.
He wasn't worried about how to solve the problem if Evelyn had hit someone. Evelyn had dealt with many bad women since she was young.
He was worried about how to resolve this trouble.
If this got out, how would others view her?
Reputation was no small matter. If she were to take over the Taylor family in the future, she must have credibility in society and establish a positive image. Otherwise, someone would surely use this against her.
"Maurice, Sophia, where did you see Evelyn hit someone? You need evidence to speak."
A clear voice came, without any aggression, yet it couldn't be ignored.
Everyone turned to see Gilbert walking towards Evelyn, his eyes unwavering.
Evelyn's gaze was deep and cold, saying nothing.
She didn't want anyone to help her out of this; it wasn't necessary. Even if there was someone, she hoped it would be Edward, not Gilbert."Gilbert, what do you mean by this? Are you saying our Jessica is framing Ms. Taylor?" Maurice asked with a dark expression.
"Whether she is or not, you should ask Miss Clark. A moment of poor judgment could ruin her."
Gilbert walked up to Evelyn, his affectionate gaze on her, causing the surrounding people to exclaim.
"Gilbert from the Alexander family has feelings for Ms. Taylor. It started at the previous charity auction!"
"The way he looks at Evelyn is full of love. Now he's defending her despite offending the Clark family. Isn't his stance clear?"
"I wonder what Mr. Taylor thinks. One is the CEO of the Wellington Group, the other is a wealthy young master from the Alexander family..."
"If it were me, I'd definitely choose Gilbert. He has a clean background with no scandals. Edward has many issues to deal with! First, it was Nicole, now it's Jessica. There might be other women in the future. How can parents not think about their children?"
Jessica's heart pounded, and she clung tightly to her mother's arm.
For some reason, even though she had no connection with Gilbert, this man gave her a strange sense of familiarity, including his voice.
And an inexplicable fear, almost suffocating her.
"Gilbert, are you saying Jessica is framing her?"
Sophia held her daughter tightly, her voice trembling with anger. "Jessica is beaten like this, and you still defend her without distinguishing right from wrong? I know your families are close, but this is too much!"
Jessica looked pitiful, but inside, she was worried.
She had checked; there were definitely no cameras in that corridor!
But Gilbert was so confident. Did he see it himself, or did he hear it? Otherwise, why would he dare to defend Evelyn?
"Miss Clark, I'll ask you one more time." Gilbert stepped closer to Jessica, his eyes cold, making her a little scared. "Did Evelyn really hit you?"
Jessica's throat choked.
"We're all adults here. You have to be responsible for what you say. Don't wait until the evidence comes out and regret it."
The surroundings gradually quieted down, everyone waiting for Jessica's answer.
A few seconds felt like an eternity to her, filled with torment.
She finally succumbed to Gilbert's overwhelming pressure. For no particular reason, she was just very afraid of Gilbert, as if he had a knife to her throat.
"Ms. Taylor and I had a little disagreement. I lost my balance and accidentally broke the door, falling to the ground."
She didn't dare mention the slapping incident.
But this one sentence was enough to prove Evelyn's innocence and enough to spark speculation!
"Could she really have hit herself? That's so vicious!"
"Isn't it obvious? Gilbert pressured her, and she couldn't handle it, so she changed her story. Didn't you see how arrogant she was just now?"
"Still too weak. If it were me, I'd never admit it, even if it killed me. Let him bring out the evidence!"
"You're still defending her? This is slander and defamation. If the Taylor family doesn't let this go, how will Jessica face anyone in the future?"
Trouble was easily resolved by Gilbert, who effortlessly helped Evelyn out of the situation.
But Evelyn remained deep in thought, showing no emotion, and certainly no gratitude towards him.
Charlie, however, relaxed his tightly furrowed brows, nodded at Gilbert, and gave a rare approving smile.
Landon stepped forward, putting his arm around Evelyn's shoulder, and calmly said to Maurice, "Maurice, does Jessica still need Evelyn to apologize to her? If you want Evelyn to apologize, it's not impossible. Let's wait until after the horse race, and we can bring our lawyers to the police station to see how to resolve this."
Charlie squinted slightly, feeling appreciative.
He couldn't say this directly, but Landon, being young and Evelyn's brother, was perfectly reasonable!
Sophia clung to her daughter in panic, while Maurice's face twisted with anger..
Landon smiled faintly, "The Taylor family won't shirk any trouble we cause. But if it's not our doing and someone tries to frame and slander, especially my beloved Evelyn, I won't let it go. I will pursue it to the end. I believe Maurice loves Miss Clark and thinks the same way."
Everyone was watching, and the Clark family members looked extremely embarrassed.
Landon's few words left them with no choice. If they agreed and it turned out to be slander, what then? If they didn't agree, it would look like they were guilty, and the public would think Jessica was framing Evelyn!
"Misunderstanding! It's all a misunderstanding!"
Neil, who had been watching from the sidelines, stepped forward with a cheerful smile to mediate, "It's normal for kids to have conflicts. We were impulsive when we were young, too! Jessica has no bad intentions; she's just spoiled by us, too willful and hot-tempered, speaking without thinking. She says things in anger and doesn't even know what she's saying afterward. Jessica was thoughtless and caused you trouble."
"Our families have known each other for years. Clifford Clark and Mr. Taylor were friends. Jessica is Clifford's daughter, and you know Clifford's character. Jessica can't be that bad."
Charlie's anger subsided after hearing this.
The eldest son of the Clark family, Eric, and Jessica's father, Clifford, were juniors he admired greatly. They were close. When Clifford died young in a plane crash, Charlie was deeply saddened for a long time.
If Clifford were still alive, the Clark family would be thriving.
It wouldn't be the Alexander family that shared the spotlight with the Wellington Group. Eric's situation in the Clark Group wouldn't be so awkward."The horse race is an annual event. Everyone should enjoy the festivities. Our Taylor family doesn't want to spoil the atmosphere or draw attention because of personal matters."
Charlie stood with his hands behind his back, showing magnanimity. "Maurice, let Jessica apologize to Evelyn, and we won't pursue this matter further."
Jessica was furious, her eyes bloodshot with anger!
Apologizing to Evelyn was worse than death for her!
"Jessica, apologize to Ms. Taylor!" Maurice exhaled a breath, urging coldly.
Jessica nearly ground her molars to dust, her body trembling as she forced herself to speak:
"I'm sorry, it was all my fault."
Evelyn's lips curved into a mesmerizing smile, stunningly beautiful. "It's okay, as long as you know you were wrong. Just don't repeat your mistakes. Your willfulness could ruin someone else's reputation. Not everyone has the means to stand against the Clark Group."
The crowd was astonished.
Evelyn's words both reprimanded Jessica and showed her own magnanimity!
At this moment, two Twitter news posts silently spread across the internet.
#Jessica Hit Herself
#Jessica Apologized to Evelyn
[This is hilarious! Did Jessica really hit herself?]
[What's going on? I suspect she's plotting something!]
[I think Jessica has a mental illness. The Clark family should get her checked out. It's best to treat young people early!]
Jessica was utterly humiliated, and netizens were laughing at her.
Even the Clark family was embarrassed because of her!
Maurice glared at Jessica, turned angrily, and left first.
Sophia held Jessica and followed, with Neil protecting them.
"Neil, thank you for helping Jessica out," Sophia said, tears of gratitude in her eyes.
"Sophia, no need to thank me. We're family. It's my duty to protect her!" Neil replied with a nonchalant smile.
Sophia thought of her late husband, tears welling up. "With Clifford gone, no one can protect us. Eric has been entangled with Molly from the Wellington family for so long, he doesn't even come home. He doesn't care about Jessica and me anymore. What will we do in the future?"
"Sophia, don't say that. Eric is the most filial. How could he forget you two?"
Neil's eyes flashed with a dark light, his words full of meaning. "Besides, if you don't agree, how could Molly from the Wellington family become your daughter-in-law?"
Sophia nodded, gritting her teeth.
Meanwhile, Charlie, ignoring others' gazes, warmly put his arm around Gilbert's shoulder, a smile of appreciation spreading across his face.
"Gilbert, if you hadn't shown up in time to help Evelyn, she would have been in trouble. You helped her restore her image and save face for our Taylor family. How should I thank you?"
Gilbert looked at Evelyn's cold face and said warmly and modestly, "Charlie, no need to be polite. My heart has always loved Evelyn. Seeing her bullied, I had to step in, even if we were in the wrong, I would still support Evelyn. If you really want to thank me, then let me see Evelyn often. Just seeing her makes me happy."
