Chapter 367 Meeting at the Hospital
The large corridor suddenly became quiet and oppressive.
Edward watched as Evelyn was held by Gilbert, her soft figure leaning against Gilbert's chest, causing a sharp pain in his heart, and his eyes reddened instantly.
During the days he was away, they had progressed so quickly.
The more Edward thought about it, the more bitter he felt. He lowered his long lashes, no longer looking at Evelyn, and his hands gripping Byron's wheelchair armrests tightened, veins bulging.
"Evelyn, you just finished a highly difficult surgery, you're exhausted and need to rest immediately."
Gilbert knew Byron and Edward were right there, but he didn't care, his only concern was Evelyn, gazing at her with deep affection, "I'll take you back."
"Grandpa?"
But Evelyn ignored Gilbert's gentle approach, walking over to Byron with worry in her eyes, kneeling down on one knee, and holding his dry hand, "Grandpa, why are you at the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?"
Edward pressed his thin lips together, a bitter taste in his mouth.
He was standing right there, yet Evelyn acted as if she couldn't see him at all.
It seemed now, she only had eyes for Gilbert.
"I'm fine, just an old problem acting up, my heart feels uncomfortable. Edward insisted on bringing me here late at night," Byron looked at Evelyn with a doting expression.
"Grandpa, you can't slack off, you have to listen to me and get your check-ups on time," Evelyn couldn't help but worry.
"Lily, who is this?" Byron looked at Gilbert with a meaningful gaze.
"Mr. Wellington, my name is Gilbert." Gilbert stepped forward and bowed politely.
"I remember now, I saw you at Joyce's birthday party last time, you're Elbert's youngest son." Byron complimented him out of politeness.
After all, recalling how close Gilbert and Evelyn were just now, he realized that their relationship was probably not ordinary, which made him feel quite uncomfortable.
Moreover, Byron clearly sensed that the atmosphere between Evelyn and Edward was very tense, even more awkward than when they had just divorced.
What should he do about this?
Byron was about to pull Evelyn aside to say a few words when a crisp voice came.
"Grandpa, how are you feeling?"
Evelyn coldly lifted her eyes, seeing Jessica, dressed only in pajamas, running over like a gust of wind, with two bodyguards following closely behind but not daring to get too close.
Byron's expression darkened as he saw Jessica, and he glared angrily at Edward.
Edward's brows furrowed, and he looked at Jessica with a cold gaze, "Why are you here?"
"I heard Grandpa was sick, I couldn't sleep at all, so I sneaked out to see him," Jessica's face was flushed, her curly hair a bit messy, her pajamas and slippers all indicating one thing—she came in a hurry, very worried about Byron's health.
"You're Eric's sister, right?" Byron asked, looking at her.
"Yes, I'm Jessica." Jessica's fingers intertwined, her face turning red.
This was her first proper meeting with Byron, and she would be the Wellington family's granddaughter-in-law in the future; her attire was indeed inappropriate.
But she thought that her hasty appearance actually highlighted her concern for Byron, making her disregard for minor details seem unimportant.
"Miss Clark."
"Please, call me Jessica." Jessica bent down, her expression very attentive, "Tonight, Edward and I will stay by your side to accompany you. If you're hospitalized, I'll stay with you in the hospital. However long you stay, I'll stay with you!"
Edward's brows furrowed even tighter, his face looking very displeased.
Evelyn inadvertently noticed Edward's expression. Unlike other CEOs, he would show his dislike for someone on his face. With such a bad temper and low emotional intelligence, his success could only be attributed to his business skills.
Back when she first married Edward, he would show her this same sour face every day.
So, was he dissatisfied with Jessica?
Evelyn turned her gaze away, not wanting to look at him any longer.
Though he was dissatisfied now, he must have been pleased when he had knocked on Jessica's hotel room door that night.
"Miss Clark, I've already had my check-up, it's just a minor issue, I can be discharged now."
Byron even called Eric "Eric" affectionately, but called Jessica "Miss Clark," showing the difference in closeness. "Miss Clark, you want to stay in the hospital with me every day, so are you hoping I won't be able to leave?"
This was half-joking.
But Jessica found it harsh and embarrassing.
She had heard Debra complain about Byron a long time ago, saying he was senile and couldn't tell right from wrong. He didn't dote on Debra, his own granddaughter, but instead doted on Evelyn. Not only did he oppose Evelyn and Edward's divorce, but he also gave her the family heirloom gemstone bracelet!
Fortunately, the gemstone bracelet was broken by Nicole's mischief.
Nicole did one good thing before she left.
"No, that's not what I meant." Jessica panicked, casting a pitiful glance at Edward.
But Edward didn't even look at her, blocking out all signals emanating from Jessica.
"Miss Clark, thank you for your concern, but with Edward and Ms. Taylor by my side, that's enough. It's late, and it's not safe for you to be out. I see your bodyguards are here. Let them take you back." Byron's attitude was still gentle, not arguing with her.
But Jessica's face had already turned ashen, looking very unpleasant.
Not only did Byron not appreciate her gesture, but he also didn't intend to let Edward take her back, clearly telling her to leave the way she came!
How infuriating!
When she married into the Wellington family, and when Byron was old and senile in a nursing home, she would definitely bribe the caregivers to mistreat him, make him go hungry, and drink foot wash!
"Lily! Lily, come here!" Byron's expression changed suddenly, and he waved at Evelyn with a big smile.
He directly left Jessica standing there.
"Yes, Grandpa."
Evelyn resisted Edward in her heart, but she really didn't want to make Byron unhappy, so she obediently walked towards him.
Seeing the usually decisive Evelyn taking small steps in front of Byron, looking soft and vulnerable, Edward was reminded of three years ago, when she had just married him.
A very soft place in his heart was silently touched.
Actually, he liked her in any form, but back then he couldn't see his own feelings clearly and didn't know how to express them.
But so what?
Behind Edward's deep eyes, his gaze towards Evelyn became filled with sadness.
