Chapter 431 Edward's Past

Evelyn walked out in a pink robe and accidentally bumped into Edward, her forehead hurting from his hard muscles.

"What are you doing standing at the door? It's a perfectly quiet afternoon. Why aren't you sleeping?" Evelyn rubbed her forehead, her tone somewhat cold.

Edward held her with both hands, gazing deeply into her eyes, his palms sweaty. "I was worried about you, so I stayed by the door."

Then, he raised his hand to touch her forehead. "Good, no fever. Where do you feel uncomfortable?"

"I'm fine." Evelyn lowered her lashes and brushed away his warm hand. "Go open the door first."

With that, she brushed past him.

Edward could sense that something was off with her mood, as if she held some resentment towards him.

Evelyn jogged to the entrance and opened the door.

"May!"

"Mrs. Wellington!"

May, carrying a simple luggage, dropped her bag on the ground and hugged Evelyn excitedly.

"Mrs. Wellington, I missed you so much!" May, in her fifties, cried like a child.

"I missed you, too. Seeing you so full of energy puts my mind at ease." Evelyn also felt a bit emotional, gently patting May.

Edward followed over and was very surprised to see May.

It was obvious that Evelyn had called May over.

"May, Edward hasn't been feeling well lately. I've been quite busy every day and worried I can't take care of everything, so I asked you to come and look after him," Evelyn explained gently.

"Of course! But I'm touched that you took Mr. Wellington in." May said, tearing up again.

She truly hadn't expected to see Edward and Evelyn standing together again!

Edward's heart sank upon hearing this.

He knew Evelyn well enough to know she didn't like to trouble others and didn't need anyone to take care of her.

But she had called May over from Riverside Villa overnight for one reason: she didn't want to be alone with him.

But she couldn't yet drive him away, she had to bring someone they both knew to avoid the awkwardness of being under the same roof.

Thinking this, Edward's hand slowly clenched at his side, his chest growing tighter.

Last night, they had been so intimate, so tender.

Why did it feel like everything from last night never happened today?

This feeling was torturing him, suffocating him!

May didn't rest after arriving. Late at night, she was washing Evelyn's clothes, tidying up the living room, and cooking for them. No matter how they tried to persuade her, she wouldn't stop, staying busy all the time.

After dinner, Evelyn wanted to stay and wash the dishes, but Edward insisted on doing it himself.

"Mr. Wellington! Are you kidding? You've never done this kind of work in your life! Let me do it!" May hurried to stop him.

"It's okay, I used to do this kind of thing often when I was young," Edward said casually, putting on gloves.

He said it without much thought, but Evelyn was taken aback. Although she had always followed Edward, she knew almost nothing about his childhood.

Edward and May stayed in the kitchen while Evelyn went back to her room alone.

She didn't want to have much contact with him.

Edward felt a tightness in his chest, his throat blocked, and all his strength drained away.

Love made him anxious and insecure.

"Mr. Wellington, let me do it. You don't look well," May said, taking the plate from his hand, her face full of concern.

"May, could you go upstairs and talk to Evelyn later?"

"What's wrong? You just made up, and now you're fighting again?" May felt sorry seeing Edward so worried and at a loss.

"May, I feel like I don't understand Evelyn at all, as if I can't get into her heart."

Edward sighed deeply, feeling very upset. "I hope you can talk to Evelyn. Back at Riverside Villa, she was closest to you. Maybe she'll open up to you and tell you things she won't tell me."

Evelyn, after taking a bath and finishing her skincare routine, collapsed onto the bed with a sigh.

In the past, she wouldn't have been so troubled by Edward.

But after overhearing Edward and Eric's conversation in the morning, it brought up endless sad memories, leaving her in no mood for anything.

She didn't even want to see Edward's face for the time being.

She knew she couldn't entirely blame Edward for losing the child, but she couldn't let it go in her heart.

Not mentioning it or thinking about it didn't mean she had forgotten.

A knock on the door made Evelyn think it was Edward coming to bother her again. She closed her eyes and covered her head with the blanket, intending to ignore it.

"Mrs. Wellington, it's me, May. Are you asleep? I warmed a cup of milk for you. If you're not asleep, have some?"

It was May, her voice familiar and warmly close.

Evelyn sat up and quickly got out of bed to open the door for May.

When she opened the door, May stood there with a cup of milk, smiling. Evelyn instinctively looked around.

"Mr. Wellington isn't here, it's just me," May saw through her thoughts immediately.

Evelyn, a bit embarrassed, pursed her lips and invited May in.

They chatted like mother and daughter, with May genuinely concerned about Evelyn's current situation, every word warming Evelyn's heart.

Seeing Evelyn drink the milk, May smiled with satisfaction and pulled her to sit on the sofa.

"Mrs. Wellington, Mr. Wellington has told me a lot."

Evelyn was startled. "Including the fact that Tiffany once set up Amanda?"

May's pupils shook violently, her grip on Evelyn's hand tightening, her palms suddenly cold with sweat. "It was Tiffany?"

Evelyn realized that Edward hadn't told May the truth.

She felt a bit guilty for revealing it so bluntly, feeling she had let Edward's good intentions down.

May sighed repeatedly, her eyes red. "I had suspected Tiffany for a long time. Besides her, who else could have harmed Amanda back then? Nicole and Debra were just kids then. How could they have killed anyone?"

Evelyn's eyes gradually darkened.

Who said children couldn't do evil?

Nicole and Debra, though not capable of setting up such a sinister plot like Tiffany, had spread harmful rumors about Amanda, causing her, already suffering from severe depression, to fall into unbearable pain.

Some children were not children; they were just little devils who hadn't grown up.

"But Mrs. Wellington, I only suspected. I had no evidence."

May said, tears streaming down her face, filled with pain and guilt. "If I had said Tiffany was involved in Amanda's death back then, my situation would have been very difficult. Mr. Wellington was still young then. If Amanda died, what would happen to Mr. Wellington?"

"I promised her I would take care of Mr. Wellington like my own son. If I couldn't stay in the Wellington family, Mr. Wellington's situation would have been even worse!"

"May I want to ask you something?" Evelyn finally voiced the question that had been hidden in her heart for too long. "What exactly did Edward go through as a child? Can you tell me?"

May no longer hid anything from her and began to tell the story.

She knew that Evelyn still had a grudge against Edward, which made her hot and cold towards him.

Only by letting her fully and unreservedly understand Edward could she truly understand and sympathize with him, which would help their relationship, which had just made some progress.

So, May told Evelyn about Edward's childhood in the slums with Amanda, suffering humiliation, taking care of a seriously ill Amanda, and how Patrick brought Edward back home, where he faced disdain and neglect in the Wellington family.

Finally, she talked about Edward's severe depression after Amanda's death and his attempt to commit suicide by slitting his wrists in the bathroom during his teenage years.

Evelyn's heart tightened, almost unable to breathe.

Silently, tears streamed from her red eyes, leaving sad trails on her cheeks.
