Chapter 289 He Admits He Likes Her
The eardrum surgery, which usually needed an appointment, got fast-tracked thanks to Eric, and Molly was wheeled into the operating room early the next morning.
Eric didn't say much last night and skipped breakfast. He just stood in the hallway, looking all kinds of anxious.
Ellen, being his assistant, had no choice but to stick by his side, also without eating or drinking. For a decade, Ellen, a stunning and sexy woman, had been like Eric's shadow.
Eric was definitely a playboy, swapping girlfriends like he changed clothes, but the one constant was his secretary, Ellen.
Whenever Eric had to attend important events that needed a female companion, he always brought Ellen along. But Ellen knew her place. Her relationship with Eric was as clear as day.
She knew Eric well. No matter how much of a playboy he was, he always made it clear to every woman from the start: he was only into dating, never marriage. And even if he did marry, he'd be like Charlie from Hameen.
But this time, Eric's attitude towards Molly was something she couldn't wrap her head around!
"Mr. Clark, the surgery's gonna take a while. Why don't you sit down and rest?" Ellen gently suggested.
"I'm not tired," Eric said, staring hard at the operating room door, anxiety written all over his face.
"It's just a minor surgery with almost no failure rate. You really don't need to worry so much."
"How can I not worry? What if her hearing gets worse? What if there are complications? What if she ends up with worse hearing than other elderly women when she gets older?" Eric's loud string of questions made Ellen feel like she might need a hearing aid before Molly even had any issues.
Eric, with bloodshot eyes, punched the wall hard, rage filling his gaze. "Damn Debra! I won't let this go. Whether Molly's ear gets better or not, I won't let this go!"
Ellen's heart skipped a beat. After hesitating for a bit, she gathered the courage to ask, "Mr. Clark, can I ask you something?"
"Speak!"
"Do you like Miss Wellington?"
Eric was taken aback, his heartbeat and breathing quickening.
Like her? He liked Molly so much that he couldn't use "she's Edward's sister" as an excuse to hide it anymore, but Molly was Tiffany's daughter.
Even though everything she did made his heart race, and her silly demeanor was so endearing to him, awakening his long-dormant affection and strong protective instincts, there was a huge gap between them because of her background.
"Ellen, I do like Molly, but it can only go this far," Eric said, pressing his hands against the wall, his head hanging low. The knuckles of his right hand, which had just struck the wall, were still bruised and red, just like his eyes at that moment.
"Is it because she's Tiffany's daughter?" Ellen asked directly.
"Yes," Eric's voice was hoarse.
"But if you really like her, you should try to be with her," Ellen said, clearly worried. It was rare for Eric to genuinely like someone, and she didn't want him to miss out on such a lovely girl. "If you were with Miss Wellington, you could help her escape her misery. If you became Miss Wellington's boyfriend, Debra wouldn't dare to act so recklessly."
"Does she dare to act recklessly now?" Eric's eyes darkened.
"It would be more reassuring to have Miss Wellington by your side all the time, living with you!"
"Have you thought about it? If I were with Molly, it would be like a marriage alliance between the Clark family and the Wellington family. How would this change the power dynamics between us?"
Eric slowly turned around, his eyes bloodshot but unusually rational. "Right now, I'm still battling with Harrison Clark and haven't fully taken control yet. Besides, Edward's situation in the Wellington family isn't much better."
He added, "At this critical moment, you want me to marry Tiffany's daughter? How would Edward feel about that? Neil would undoubtedly seize the opportunity to ally with Tiffany to seize power, and my chances of winning would be even smaller! It might even drag Edward down!"
Ellen's heart ached, "Mr. Clark."
"Ellen, I will never forget how my father died." Eric slowly collapsed onto the bench, clutching his head in agony, "I will never forget that night when my mother and I learned about my father's plane crash. It was pouring rain, and my mother stood alone in the cold storm, crying all night."
He went on, "I also can't forget the image of Neil hiding in the shadows and smirking at my father's funeral. I cannot let him take control of the Clark Group. I cannot let anyone or anything hinder my plan to take over the Clark Group!"
Ellen knelt on one knee in front of Eric, raising her trembling hand to gently soothe his back, which was heaving with anger.
"Ellen, what my father lost, I will help him reclaim, one by one. Until then, I can't make a single wrong move. I can't lose!" Eric insisted.
Evelyn arrived at KS WORLD in the morning to finalize the arrangements for Joyce's birthday party. As soon as she returned to her office, Edward's call came in.
"Edward, what's up?" Evelyn's tone was as cold as ever, as if the tender kiss from last night had never happened.
"Evelyn," Edward's voice was so gentle it could melt.
"Who's Evelyn? I don't know her. There's only Ms. Taylor here," Evelyn's red lips curved slightly, a hint of a smile playing on them.
"Did Grandpa call you?"
"Grandpa? No. Did something happen to him?" Mentioning Byron made Evelyn tense up.
"It's not Grandpa; it's Molly."
"Molly?"
"I didn't return to Riverside Villa; instead, I stayed at my private villa last night. Grandpa just called to ask why Molly was taken away by Eric. That's when I found out something happened at home last night," Edward's voice revealed a hint of fatigue and some anger. "I just tried to contact Eric, but I couldn't reach him."
Evelyn stood up, her eyes wide open, slamming her hand on the desk. "I knew he had ulterior motives when he took Molly to the hotel last time, but you insisted he wasn't that kind of person!"
"Evelyn, I grew up with Eric. I know him well. He likes women, but not just any woman," Edward tried to comfort her while also defending Eric. "Molly is my sister; he wouldn't touch her."
"So what if she's your sister? Eric is bold enough to go after anyone as long as they're not his mother or daughter!" Evelyn slammed the desk again. "You better pray Eric didn't do anything to Molly!"
"Okay," Edward responded softly.
Evelyn was suddenly stunned. "What?"
"I said, I agree with you," Edward said.
Molly's surgery was successful, and she was moved to a regular ward. She lay on the bed, her thin body looking so fragile it was heartbreaking.
"How are you feeling? Does it still hurt?" Eric sat by the bed, looking into her bright doe eyes, his voice unusually gentle.
Molly shook her head slightly.
"Can you hear now?" Eric asked.
She blinked and nodded gently.
"That's great," Eric let out a long sigh of relief and quickly took out his phone. "I'll call Edward and Evelyn to come pick you up."
Before he could finish speaking, Molly grabbed his arm in panic. "Eric! I'm hungry."
"I figured you'd be hungry. Ellen went to get you some food; she should be back soon."
At that moment, the door opened, and Ellen hurried in with a steaming tray, "Mr. Clark, I got the food. As you requested, it's all light and easy to digest."
"Bring it over."
Ellen held the tray while Eric scooped some food, blew on it, and then gently brought it to Molly's lips.
"Here, Molly, let me feed you," Eric said. His tenderness and attentiveness left Ellen completely stunned!
Indeed, liking someone was something that couldn't be hidden.
"I can do it myself," Molly said, her face blushing with embarrassment.
"You're still very weak. Let me feed you." Eric touched the spoon to her soft lips, a playful smile in his long eyes. "Women in Mugden line up for a chance to feed me, but they never get the opportunity. A woman who gets to be fed by me is one in a million. You should seize the opportunity, Molly."
Molly swallowed, clutching the bedsheet.
"Open your mouth," Eric spoke.
