Chapter 258 An Error Occurred While Sending the Request.
Heavy rain, rubble, mud, thick smoke—those were the last things Evelyn saw before she blacked out, almost losing hope.
But she still found a bit of strength to shove the climber away before everything went to hell.
Even if there was just a tiny chance, she wanted her to make it out alive.
If she wasn't ready to face all kinds of danger, she had no business wearing this uniform and being here. She wasn't scared of dying. As long as it meant something, going through this crazy world wouldn't be for nothing.
Truth was, she wasn't always this gutsy. Forget about dying, even when she got sick and needed a shot, she'd cry for half a day, totally a delicate and shy little girl.
It was when she was eleven, right here, that she met Edward.
His courage, his toughness, his eyes shining like a lighthouse in the deep sea, guiding her—the reckless bravery of a chance encounter, a willingness to share life and death with her, deeply shook her soul. For the first time, she got that someone could burn so brightly, bloom so magnificently, and live like that. Even after all these years, even after she married him and he hurt her, she had to admit it. Edward changed her and her life.
Everything hit like an avalanche, all at once!
Evelyn, in a brief coma, had a long and bizarre dream.
She dreamed of being with Charlie and Victoria, dreamed of her brothers celebrating her birthday when they were kids.
Landon picked her up and placed her on a mountain of gift boxes, Simon sang a slightly off-key birthday song, Aaron held the cake and blew out the candles with her, Ulysses put the toy gun she had wanted for so long into her little hand.
And, about Edward, she remembered them fighting side by side on the battlefield; she remembered the first time she saw him again beside Byron, unable to look away; she remembered Edward pushing the divorce papers in front of her, forcing her to leave with cold determination.
Suddenly, a heart-wrenching pain erupted from deep inside her, spreading through her whole body.
Evelyn woke up suddenly, gasping for air like a drowning person, alternating between hot sweat and cold rain, making her shiver all over.
"I'm still alive. I'm still alive!" She was overjoyed, closed her eyes, and tears streamed down her face.
'If it weren't for dreaming of Edward, or remembering how he hurt me, I might have died unknowingly, confusedly!' she thought.
Then Evelyn was almost scared out of her wits after waking up.
She found herself washed to some unknown place by the mud, lying on a hillside!
Her backpack was hanging on a not-so-sturdy tree branch, her body half-buried in the soil, almost buried alive!
Evelyn took a deep breath to calm herself, gritted her teeth, murmuring, "I can't die. I absolutely can't die! What about Charlie if I die? What about my brothers? Since God gave me a chance to live, it means I shouldn't die!"
The tree branch above her head made a slight noise!
Evelyn didn't dare to speak, even not daring to breathe, afraid that one more breath would make the branch give way!
She struggled to dig herself out of the mud with her hands, then found two rocks to climb on, and flipped herself up!
Just as she jumped onto the rock, the branch above her head snapped.
Then, it fell into the abyss, disappearing without a trace.
Evelyn's heart was pounding so hard, it felt like it was gonna jump right out of her chest.
But she didn't have time to be scared. All she could think about was how to climb up!
By now, night had fallen, and the wind and rain were going nuts.
The cold rain stung her eyes, blurring her vision, and her hands were so red from the cold, she could barely feel them.
Her will to live and sheer determination were the only things keeping her going.
Victoria passed away early, so Evelyn was raised by Donna, Joyce, and Susan. When she was younger, Susan often took her boxing, horseback riding, archery, and rock climbing became their thing.
Thanks to that hobby, it was coming in handy now!
Just as Evelyn saw herself getting close to the top, a strong tremor came from below, and she heard a rumble.
Countless small rocks started rolling down. Another landslide was coming!
Suddenly, the rock Evelyn was standing on gave way, and she was instantly airborne, losing all support!
"No! Help!" She screamed in terror, the feeling of despair washing over her.
One wrong move on the cliff, and she was done for.
A tear of unwillingness trickled from the corner of Evelyn's eye as she resignedly closed her eyes.
"Evelyn!"
The next second, a pair of rough hands suddenly grabbed her slender wrist.
Evelyn felt the fall abruptly stop and slowly opened her eyes, meeting Edward's eyes, bright as stars, her heartbeat and breath seeming to pause simultaneously.
"Edward?" Evelyn said, puzzled, thinking, 'Is this a dream? An illusion?'
Her heart was pounding uncontrollably!
"Don't be afraid! I'm here!"
Edward's intense gaze fell on her pale face, and all his emotions mixed together, firmly gripping his heart.
Sweat poured down his face, his left hand clawing at the muddy ground as his right hand gripping her, his knuckles white and trembling. He felt himself slipping, sinking, knowing the danger wasn't over yet. There was a very real chance they could both die.
"Edward." Evelyn murmured his name, tears unknowingly streaming down her pale cheeks, "I don't want to die."
She had climbed this far, pushing beyond her limits, always strong. But the moment she saw Edward, the tough exterior she'd built around herself crumbled.
Seeing Evelyn, who feared nothing, now crying, Edward felt his entire blood supply surge towards her and said, "You'll have plenty of time to cry later, right now use all your strength to climb up!"
Evelyn sniffed, gritted her teeth, and climbed towards the top with Edward's pull.
"Hurry! This place is about to collapse too!" Edward shouted anxiously at her.
"I know! I'm already going as fast as I can!" Evelyn shouted back, her eyes red.
Edward frowned, thinking, 'She still looks more adorable when she was scared to tears just now.'
At that moment, a flash of lightning lit up Evelyn's face.
Edward suddenly felt a sharp pain in his head!
Through his blurred vision, Evelyn turned into an eleven or twelve-year-old girl!
Familiar yet strange voices echoed in his mind.
——"What's your name?"
——"Not saying? Then I'll call you Lily."
Edward's eyes widened in shock, his ears buzzing, roaring!
The buried memories surged in his mind, his eyes red.
'Lily, Lily! It turns out she is the girl I saved from near disaster thirteen years ago!' Edward suddenly remembered.
