Chapter 438: The Funeral
Today, everyone present was from the Taylor family.
Edward walked calmly and confidently with Evelyn, not feeling out of place at all despite being the only outsider.
On the contrary, he needed to be even more composed at such a moment.
He wanted to be Evelyn's support, her solid backing. He wanted her to feel completely at ease and let her guard down wherever he was.
Bart followed behind Edward, feeling his scalp tingle and his palms sweat as he saw Evelyn's brothers again.
"Evelyn!"
Everyone hurriedly gathered around Evelyn.
Seeing Edward, the expressions of the Taylor family members softened a bit.
"Thank you all for your hard work during this time."
She then looked gently at Jennifer, who was pushing William over, without blaming William for his presumptuous actions. "You've worked hard too, Jennifer. Thank you for your care and companionship for William during this time. You've really helped me a lot."
"Evelyn, we're family. You don't need to say that." Jennifer felt warm inside from Evelyn's praise.
"William, take good care of your health and treat Jennifer well." Evelyn stepped forward, taking William's hand with her left and Jennifer's hand with her right, firmly clasping their hands together. "I hope that from now on, the person you protect with all your might is Jennifer."
Tears welled up in William's eyes as he looked past Evelyn to the tall figure of Edward behind her.
Yes, it was time for him to step back.
Evelyn already had someone who would fight for her with all his strength, someone far stronger and more reliable than he.
Edward silently watched Evelyn's back, feeling a soft spot in his heart being touched again. He wanted to step forward and hold her, to tell the world that she was enough for him.
A few minutes later, the farewell ceremony officially began.
At that moment, Ulysses, who had been outside, hurriedly walked up to Evelyn with a grim expression.
"Evelyn, there's a problem. Somehow, word got out, and a lot of media reporters have suddenly shown up outside!"
"What?" Evelyn's pupils contracted sharply. "Landon always does things without giving anything away. Everyone here is one of us; no one can have it leaked it!"
"Our people reported that judging by the uniforms of the bodyguards, they belong to the Wellington family."
As he spoke, Ulysses cast a meaningful glance at Edward, his gaze unusually intense.
Edward frowned. "It wasn't me."
"I know." Evelyn lowered her eyes and raised her hand in a commanding gesture. "If I suspected you, I wouldn't have let you come."
Edward looked deeply moved.
"The only people I can think of are Tiffany and Debra. After all, they know exactly how Kimberly died. They've been waiting for this funeral day."
Evelyn let out a cold laugh, her beautiful eyes turning bloodshot as if crying tears of blood. "They always like to show off in front of the media, to polish their public image. Daring to provoke us is courting death."Her imposing aura was so overwhelming that even Edward and Ulysses got goosebumps!
"Ms. Taylor." Behind her, Kimberly's grandmother's trembling voice called out, "Is something wrong?"
Evelyn turned around, seeing her worried expression, and felt a pang of sadness. She quickly went over to support her.
"It's nothing, nothing. Please rest assured and see Kimberly off on her final journey. No matter what happens, we are here. You have nothing to fear."
Outside the cemetery.
A swarm of reporters surrounded the entrance, their cameras aimed at the funeral site.
To them, this funeral was a huge headline generator! Not only were several big figures from the Wellington family and the Taylor family gathered inside, but the girl named Kimberly was also the only victim of that shooting incident!
So, could it be said that Kimberly's death was intricately linked to the Taylor family and the Wellington family?
If this were exposed, it would be national news!
The rich and powerful caused the death of an innocent girl from the lower class!
Who was the real culprit behind the innocent girl's death? It was a mystery!
And Evelyn had guessed it all.
These reporters were all brought in by Tiffany and Debra.
At this moment, a fleet of luxury cars from the Wellington family lined up outside, with bodyguards getting out first to form a human wall, pushing the reporters back. After all, Tiffany and Debra still needed to maintain their appearance.
Inside the car, Tiffany took out a makeup compact and frantically applied powder to her lips to make her pampered face look pale and haggard.
"Mom, do we need to attend this funeral?"
Debra glanced at the dark window, thinking of Evelyn and her powerful brothers inside, and started to feel nervous. "Every time we've gone up against Evelyn, we've never gained the upper hand. Instead, we've been suppressed by her."
"And Kimberly, that ungrateful little bitch, just died. Shouldn't we be avoiding suspicion at this time?"
"Avoid suspicion? At this point, is that even necessary?"
Tiffany closed the makeup compact, her pale face paired with a sinister expression and a vicious look in her eyes, making her look like a vengeful ghost. "If Evelyn had any evidence, do you think she wouldn't have come after us by now?"
"The fact that she hasn't made a move means she has no clue, no evidence to point at us!"
Debra nodded thoughtfully.
Yes, with Evelyn's decisive nature, if she had any evidence, she would have torn their house apart by now. How could she wait until now?
"Also, the media already knows that Kimberly was a maid for the Wellington family. As the lady of the Wellington family, if I don't show up, won't I be seen as cold-blooded and unkind by the media?"
Tiffany's mind was full of calculations. "So I must attend this funeral. It's a great opportunity to boost my image and reputation."
"Did you prepare the money for Kimberly's family?"
"Yes, but Mom, do we need to give that much?" Debra felt a bit reluctant.
"You have to spend money to get benefits, Debra. This amount of money is nothing. I wouldn't even blink if I had to burn it for Kimberly on the spot."
After all, nothing was more important than keeping that sinful secret.
As soon as Tiffany and Debra got out of the car, they put on a facade of being kind and gentle. They were seasoned actors, and in front of the media cameras, their eyes turned red, and tears came easily.
