Chapter 407 I Want to See You
"If she really wants to be with Gilbert?" Edward's words came out, his heart aching as if it were split in two.
"From what I know about Evelyn, she won't for now. I know what Evelyn looks like when she's in love, and no one knows better than us brothers."
As he spoke, Ulysses glanced at him and let out a cold laugh.
Edward's Adam's apple moved with difficulty, his cheeks flushed with guilt and regret.
Of course, he knew how deeply Evelyn loved someone.
Once, her passionate heart and sincere love were all given to him.
He had been loved unreservedly, but unfortunately, he was blind and missed this genuine love.
"That's why I said we need to act quickly. While Evelyn only has a good impression of Gilbert and no deeper feelings, we need to nip this in the bud."
Ulysses squinted his eyes and ground his teeth, "If we let them continue to develop, I'm afraid Evelyn won't be able to resist his passionate advances, and by then, it will be too late! Think about it, but I don't think you have any reason to refuse, right?"
With that, he turned to leave.
"Are you helping me because of some old-school friendship?" Edward suddenly asked, his back to him.
Ulysses paused, raised an eyebrow, "You remembered, huh? That's rare. Schoolmates, yes. Friendship, not at all. Goodbye."
Edward remained silent.
On the way back, Charlie gave up his car for Evelyn and Gilbert to sit in.
Anyone with eyes could see that Charlie was creating an opportunity for them to be alone.
On the way back, Donna, Joyce, and Susan shared a car to chat about gossip.
"What does Charlie mean? Is he trying to set up Evelyn and Gilbert?"
As soon as the car started, Susan couldn't help but speak, "If that's the case, Gilbert is really lucky. Becoming the son-in-law of the Taylor family, he'd be laughing in his sleep!"
"The Alexander family in Mugden is no less prestigious than the Wellington family," Donna said with a bit of helplessness.
"Evelyn has always had a special feeling for Mr. Wellington. Has she really sorted out her feelings and is ready for a new relationship?" Joyce's question was sharp and to the point.
"As the saying goes, the best way to get over an old love is to start a new one. If Evelyn doesn't date other men, she'll never forget Edward."
Susan thought for a moment and said in surprise, "But I'm puzzled by Charlie's attitude. Didn't he tell us before that he didn't think highly of the Alexander family's sons? Why has he suddenly changed his mind about Gilbert?"
Donna's long eyebrows furrowed slightly.
It seemed that Gilbert was really good at scheming.
Meanwhile, Evelyn kept looking out the car window, not in the mood to chat with Gilbert.
Gilbert sat quietly beside her, his gaze never leaving her.
Even just being by her side made him feel incredibly happy.
"Gilbert, you've been with me the whole time I was in the hospital. Thank you for your hard work."
Evelyn didn't look at him, but her tone was gentle, "You must be tired too. When we get back, take a good rest and don't come to see me for a while."
"Evelyn, do you not want to see me?" Gilbert frowned, his heart tightening.
"Gilbert, I don't know what you said to my dad, but if you still want to be friends with me, I hope everything stops here."
Evelyn looked at him at this moment, her beautiful eyes cold, "There's no possibility between Edward and me, and the same goes for you."
"Evelyn, you misunderstood me. I didn't say anything to Uncle Charlie, I..."
Evelyn closed her eyes and shook her head, interrupting him, "Your feelings for me are just remnants of childhood affection. It's been fifteen years; I'm no longer your light, and I can't do anything for you anymore."
"Gilbert, childhood affection brought us back together, and I cherish this bond. I hope you don't ruin it."
"If you still won't listen to me, then the only thing I can do is not see you anymore."
This was a gentle rejection, and Evelyn had tried to use words that were easy to accept.
But every word still felt like a cold, sharp knife, piercing Gilbert's heart, leaving it in tatters and bleeding.
He breathed heavily, his delicate face now drained of color, his fists clenched tightly in the dark.
'Evelyn, I love you so much.'
'But you keep treating my heart like a target, hurting me again and again, thoroughly!'
'How can you be so cruel!'
As the atmosphere grew heavy, Evelyn's phone vibrated.
She looked down at the screen, seeing Kimberly's name, her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly answered.
"What's wrong?" she lowered her voice, mindful of the person next to her.
"Ms. Taylor! Do you have time tonight? I need to see you!"
Kimberly's voice was urgent and very soft, like a whisper, "I have something very important to tell you! But I'm at Riverside Villa now, and there are eyes everywhere. I can't say it here!"
Evelyn's heart tightened, and she checked her watch. "I'll come to see you tonight. We'll talk in person."
Gilbert remained expressionless but was quietly paying attention to her.
However, her voice was so low that he could barely hear anything.
"No, no! I'll come to you. Please don't come to me!"
Kimberly was extremely frightened, her voice trembling, "I'll come to you. Just tell me a place, and I'll meet you there!"
"Okay, I'll send it to you in a bit."
Evelyn knew Kimberly was in a dangerous situation and didn't say much more before quickly hanging up.
Seeing her complex expression, Gilbert asked with concern, "Evelyn, is something wrong? Is there anything I can help with?"
"No need!" Evelyn reflexively refused immediately.
Gilbert was stunned for a moment, his eyes darkening.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get close to her.
In front of her, there was always an impenetrable wall of ice, a barrier and distance that he wondered if he could ever break through.
Evelyn took a deep breath and rubbed her forehead."Gilbert, I'm sorry. You don't need to take me back to Hameen. There's something I need to handle at the hotel. Let me take you back first."
