Chapter 56 Evelyn's Tears, Stars in the Sky
Evelyn thought about how she had once hidden her identity to stay with Byron for Edward. She thought about the kindness Byron had shown her over the years and how she had failed to take care of the gemstone bracelet he had given her. Overwhelmed with guilt, tears surged from her eyes as she cried uncontrollably, disregarding her appearance.
"Why are you crying? Don't cry, my dear," Byron was extremely nervous and quickly took out a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe away her tears.
Edward, standing outside the door, also heard the crying and quickly looked towards the study.
Seeing his ex-wife crying with tears streaming down her face, he couldn't help but feel shocked. His heart suddenly tightened, and he struggled to hold his phone steady.
On the other end of the call, Nicole was also crying. "She used Grandfather against me even though she knew he didn't like me. How could she be so wicked?"
Edward couldn't quite catch her words.
The woman in front of him was clearly crying without any grace, but he could feel that she was genuinely sad. Every tear seemed to touch his heartstrings.
"What's wrong with you? Please don't scare me!" The crying girl completely flustered Byron.
Evelyn sobbed, unable to speak properly. "Grandfather, I broke the bracelet. I've been trying everything to repair it these past few days, but it's impossible. So I could make an identical one. I-I was just afraid that you would be upset if you found out. I'm sorry, Grandfather. I lied to you. I'm sorry."
Evelyn's body trembled as she cried, her hand wiping away the tears on the back of it, now soaked.
Edward listened to her tearful confession in fragments, and his whole body shook.
He finally understood what she had been doing during her disappearance, and he finally understood why her delicate fingertips were calloused. It was all to replicate the bracelet Byron had given her.
Suddenly, he felt as if each sparkling teardrop was burning his heart, spreading bitter sorrow.
"This is nothing serious, my child!" Byron held Evelyn's small hand, feeling heartbroken yet helpless. "Actually, when you first came in, I noticed that you weren't wearing the bracelet I gave you. I also guessed that it might be broken or something; otherwise, our filial Lily wouldn't have left it behind. But I truly have no intention of blaming you. Your grandmother has plenty of gemstone bracelets. She has a whole box of them. I had wanted to give you one, but I was afraid you wouldn't accept it, so I chose the best one and made up that story to make sure you took it."
"Your grandmother used to joke with me about how these things were a burden and told me not to let them follow her when she's laid to rest because she didn't want them taking up space!"
Upon hearing this, Evelyn's face eased a bit, but her eyes remained teary and her nose red.
"Edward! Where the hell did you go?" Byron slapped the armrest of his wheelchair. "Hurry up and come over to comfort your wife!"
Nicole called out anxiously, "Edward! Don't go. I haven't finished speaking yet."
"I have some matters to attend to here. We can talk later," Edward replied decisively before hanging up the phone.
On the other side, Nicole stared at the blank screen with anger, breathing heavily. Her face turned red with fury.
She thought to herself, "Lily, you wench! You slut! I will make sure you suffer a horrible fate!"
Nicole hurriedly dialed Tiffany's number.
"Auntie! Please help me! Lily, that wench, is with Edward at grandfather's place!"
Nicole sobbed, "If this continues, Edward will be seduced by her! Before, whenever I mentioned I missed him, he would come running to me without a care."
"Now, he hangs up the phone before I can even finish speaking! How can this be anything other than a change of heart?"
"Auntie, if I can't marry into the Wellington family, I won't be able to assist you anymore. It would be useless for me to have all these talents!"
Nicole knew that venting her grievances was not enough; she had to involve Tiffany and make her feel that her interests were being threatened in order to get genuine advice from her.
"Nicole, don't panic. After all these years, you should know what kind of person Edward is. You can't force him or rush things, or it will backfire like last time. Despite feeling guilty towards you and being grateful for your kindness in his childhood, this bond can only withstand so much wear and tear," Tiffany calmly advised.
"What should I do then?" Nicole asked anxiously.
"Pretend, pretend to be miserable, pretend to be pitiful, but you have to make it deep into Edward's heart."
Tiffany chuckled coldly, "With me here, that divorced woman, Lily, won't be able to compete with you. She can't defeat us!"
Edward swiftly entered the study with a tall figure.
"Grandfather, I'm here."
"Are you deaf? Didn't you hear Lily crying? If I didn't call you, would you not come?" Byron scolded Edward.
As long as his precious Lily was happy, he would do whatever she wanted!
"No," Edward responded and walked over to Evelyn's side, stealing a glance at her.
He saw tears streaming down her fair face like dewdrops on fresh flowers. Her hair partially covering her beautiful cheeks made her lips appear even more delicate and pitiful.
Evelyn felt a bit embarrassed, and her cheeks blushed. A tear dropped from her eyes like a fallen star.
Edward became momentarily dizzy, his chest rising and falling with her blinking eyes.
"You brat, apologize to your wife!" Byron urged impatiently.
"Why should it be me? She wasn't crying because of me," Edward furrowed his brows, confused.
Byron glared, "Because she is your woman! Shouldn't you be the one to comfort her when she cries? Are you speechless?"
"Grandfather, Edward, and I have divorced; I am not..." Evelyn hurriedly said.
"He hasn't done anything good for you in the past three years. This apology is owed to you by him!" When Byron heard the word "divorce," his expression darkened, and it hurt him more than his divorce. "You worthless guy! If you don't comfort Lily today, don't ever call yourself my grandson!"
Edward furrowed his brow and finally said softly, "I'm sorry."
Evelyn, with her reddened eyes, was greatly shocked.
In her impression, this was the first time this man apologized to her.
Unfortunately, there was no sincerity in it.
"Do another bow!" Byron said.
"Is it necessary?" Edward furrowed his brow.
"Not forcing you to kneel is already good enough! In the past, I had to apologize and bow deeply to your grandmother with sincerity! Lily is my treasure; I'll never allow you to neglect her; hurry up!"
Edward was forced into a corner by Byron, so he lowered his head and took a step back, clasping his hands together in front of his chest, the left hand outside and the right hand inside, and bowed deeply to Evelyn.
"Ms. Brown, I'm sorry. I apologize to you here."
This scene, which resembled a painting of talented scholars and beautiful ladies, made Byron laugh.
Is this the happiness of watching a loving couple?
Evelyn's cheeks were rosy, her sobs gradually ceased, and as she watched his polite appearance, she couldn't help but smile secretly.
Being able to make Edward bow to her, regardless of sincerity, made her feel very happy.
Just as Edward was about to get up, Byron gave another order, "Lily didn't say you can stand up yet, so you keep bowing! You can only straighten your back once she forgives you!"
However, one second, two seconds, three seconds...
Evelyn still did not speak!
This woman was clearly doing it on purpose!
Until she saw Edward getting a little angry, Evelyn sniffled and said softly, "Grandfather, it has nothing to do with Edward. Please don't make it difficult for him."
Hearing her words, Edward was shocked.
He thought, 'Lily, you are really good at pretending! You're amazing!'
But seeing her pair of beautiful swollen eyes, he couldn't stay angry.
At dinner time, Evelyn personally pushed Byron, with Edward accompanying them, and the three of them went to the dining room.
The table was filled with exquisite delicacies, all prepared by Byron for her.
However, just as they were seated, Bart, with a complicated expression, hurriedly ran in and leaned towards Edward to whisper something.
"If you have something to say, say it openly," Byron disliked people whispering secrets and spoke with dignity. "We are all family here, don't hide things, especially at my dinner table."
Bart looked at Edward with an embarrassed expression.
"You can go ahead and speak here," Edward instructed in a monotone voice.
"Yes, Mr. Edward," Bart took a deep breath and spoke softly, "I just received a call from Mrs. Tiffany. She heard that you were at Mr. Byron's place and didn't want to disturb you, so she contacted me to relay her message."
"Hmph, at least that woman knows her place!" Byron's face darkened at the mention of Tiffany.
"Mrs. Tiffany said that Ms. Adams' diagnosis results are out, and she has been diagnosed with severe depression."
