Chapter 341 Don't Want to See You
The screen didn't show a name, but a string of numbers.
Edward had two numbers, one for personal use and one for work. She remembered both very well.
He would only use his personal phone to call her privately, which made this call unusual.
Evelyn's heart tightened as she answered, slowly bringing the phone to her ear without speaking.
"Evelyn!" Edward's voice was hoarse beyond recognition.
Evelyn pressed her lips tightly together.
"Evelyn, please believe me, I was framed!"
Edward knew it was rare for her to answer, so he didn't waste time and got straight to the point, "This is a complex setup. Jessica couldn't have orchestrated such a complicated scheme alone; someone must be behind her! The bait they used against me wasn't Jessica, it was you!"
"Half an hour later." Evelyn lowered her sorrowful eyes and slowly spoke, "Let's meet at the amusement park near KS WORLD."
Edward wouldn't have had the chance to talk to her if she hadn't received Landon's call earlier.
She wanted to hear what kind of explanation Edward could give her.
"Mr. Alexander, Ms. Taylor just left the hospital alone in her car." Curtis hurried back to report to Gilbert, "She stayed in the restroom for a long time and left with an angry expression, looking even paler than you!"
Gilbert leaned against the headboard, a slight smile playing on his lips.
Gilbert ordered, "Send someone to follow Ms. Taylor, and prepare a car for me. I'll follow her."
Curtis wanted to persuade him otherwise but knew it was futile, so he agreed, "I'll prepare the car right away and get you a new suit."
Gilbert said, "No need for a suit; a patient should look like a patient."
Gilbert moved slightly, breaking out in a cold sweat from the pain, his jawline stiffening.
Curtis saw this and felt a pang of sorrow.
At that moment, the phone under the pillow vibrated.
Curtis quickly picked it up and handed it to Gilbert, "Mr. Alexander, it's Miss Morgan."
Gilbert's eyes darkened as he answered the call.
"Mr. Alexander, how did my task go?"
Sarah's voice was cheerful with a hint of seduction, "I sent those photos to Edward, and he believed them immediately, rushing to the hotel, eager to jump into the trap."
"Did you send those photos to his phone via text message?" Gilbert asked leisurely.
"Yes," Sarah replied.
"Good, that makes things easier."
Gilbert's lips curled into a mocking smile, "You did a great job tonight. Thank you."
"Please don't say that. I owe my life to you. I'm willing to do anything for you!" Sarah's voice was soft but deeply sincere.
Gilbert's expression remained cold as he said, "I'll have someone send you a plane ticket and transfer some money to your account. It should be enough for you to go away for a year or so. If you need more, let Curtis know, and we'll send it to you."
Sarah's breath caught in her throat as panic began to set in., "Mr. Alexander, are you sending me away?"
Gilbert said, "Edward fell into our trap, and he won't take it lying down. He'll start investigating immediately. He's not stupid; he's just thrown off balance because of Ms. Taylor this time. To avoid unnecessary trouble, you should lay low for a while. Curtis will take over at Rose Club temporarily."
Sarah wanted to explain, "But!"
"Listen to me." Gilbert's voice turned icy.
Sarah choked up, "Yes, Mr. Alexander."
Evelyn arrived at the amusement park first because she was closer.
She sat alone on a bench, gazing at the desolate snowy night.
An ice cream truck passed by, and she stopped it to buy a vanilla ice cream.
Before she could take a bite, a series of hurried footsteps approached. He crunched through the snow and stopped in front of her.
"Evelyn."
Evelyn gripped the ice cream tightly, her heart pounding as she slowly looked up.
In front of her stood Edward, his thin suit and hair covered in a layer of snow, his face and ears red from the cold, but his eyes were even redder.
"Evelyn, don't sit here; it's too cold. You'll get sick."
Edward's Adam's apple trembled with concern as he reached out to her.
Evelyn slapped his hand away, her voice colder than the snow, "You know it's cold, so if you have something to say, say it quickly."
"This is a setup. Someone is framing me to create a scandal and drive a wedge between us!" Edward urgently defended himself.
"A relationship?" Evelyn laughed bitterly, "Do we even have a relationship?"
Evelyn added, "Moreover, what is there to drive a wedge between us, given that we're already divorced?"
"Evelyn, is that how you really feel? Is that what you think?" Edward's throat felt like it was being pierced, a strong taste of blood rising.
Evelyn slowly stood up, meeting his gaze, "Edward, even if this is a setup, the fact that you went to the hotel to see Jessica is undeniable, isn't it? It seems Jessica holds a significant place in your heart."
Edward shouted, "I didn't go to see Jessica! I went to see you!"
Edward's eyes reddened as he stepped forward, his hot, trembling breath brushing against Evelyn's flushed nose as he reached out to embrace her.
Evelyn shouted, "Don't touch me!"
Evelyn suddenly turned into a porcupine, stepping back and throwing the ice cream in her hand directly onto Edward's suit in a fit of panic.
Edward raised his voice, "Evelyn! I'm telling the truth!"
Edward's arms froze in mid-air, torn between wanting to approach her and fearing her rejection, driving him to the brink of madness, "I called you many times tonight, but you didn't answer! I thought something had happened to you. I've been worried about you all night!"
Evelyn was secretly taken aback.
Called many times? When did that happen?
He must be making it up. She hadn't received a single call!
Edward explained, "Then I received some photos from an anonymous number, showing you being embraced by a stranger and walking into a hotel together! I was afraid you were in danger, so I went to the hotel to find you. That's when the reporters surrounded me!"
Evelyn's eyes were filled with cold mockery as she looked at him, "Edward, if you're going to make up a story, at least make it believable. If I had known you were going to say such far-fetched things, I wouldn't have come to see you at all."
"I have evidence!" Edward gritted his teeth and, with trembling hands from the cold, pulled out his phone.
Evelyn's heart raced, and she pursed her lips.
She was also hoping, giving him a chance.
"These are the photos I received. Look, isn't this you in the pictures?"
Suddenly, Edward's pupils dilated as he stared at the phone screen, repeatedly checking the message inbox.
The photos that had been sent to him via text message were all gone!
His trembling fingers frantically swiped the screen, his shocked gaze almost piercing through it, but he couldn't find the photos that served as evidence!
They were gone!
Completely gone?
Evelyn's lips curled into a smile, but there was no warmth in her eyes, only a coldness that chilled him to the bone, "Edward, if you haven't thought of a good reason or excuse, there's really no need to rush to see me. I don't want to see you. I didn't want to before, and I won't want to in the future."
As she brushed past him, Edward felt a coldness envelop him, as if he had fallen into an ice cave.
Edward shouted, "Evelyn, Evelyn, don't go!"
Just as he was about to reach out to stop her, another voice called out, "Evelyn."
Evelyn suddenly looked up and saw Gilbert standing a few steps away in the snow, wearing a hospital gown with only a cashmere coat draped over him, his face even paler than the snow.
"Gilbert! Why did you run out of the hospital? Don't you know you're still injured?"
Evelyn hurriedly ran to Gilbert, her eyes filled with reproach, "How did you get here? How did you know I was here?"
Gilbert explained, "After you left the hospital, I was worried about you, so I had someone follow you. But don't misunderstand, I wasn't stalking you; I just wanted to protect you."
Gilbert took a weak breath, his tone full of concern, "How could I let a girl go out alone at night?"
Edward's face was as cold as frost, his sharp eyes wishing to tear Gilbert apart!
Evelyn said, "It's too cold. Let's go back."
Evelyn lowered her long lashes and helped him prepare to leave.
"Was it you who set this up, Gilbert?" Edward's voice was like a sharp blade, magnetic and low, hoarse with a hint of anger.
Gilbert sneered, "Mr. Wellington, you and Miss Clark had a secret rendezvous at a hotel and were caught by reporters. How is that a setup? And why blame it on me?"
Gilbert couldn't help but laugh, full of mockery, "Isn't it true that you two are in love?"
Edward shouted, "Gilbert!"
"Mr. Wellington, instead of being suspicious, you should think about how to explain this to the Clark family and your good friend Eric. Miss Clark is an innocent girl. After something like this, if you don't get married, it will be hard to resolve, won't it?" Gilbert squinted his eyes and smiled.
"Gilbert, stop it. Let's go." Evelyn felt like a dull knife was scraping her heart. She just wanted to leave here immediately. The farther away from Edward, the better.
As they turned to leave, Edward's hoarse voice asked, "Were you with him all night? Were you together the whole time?"
"All the time," Evelyn replied indifferently, her back to him.
"Evelyn, is he really that important to you? More important than me?" Edward's whole body trembled, his thin lips quivering despite his efforts to control them.
Evelyn sneered, "Edward, what's the point of asking such questions now?"
Evelyn laughed softly, her eyes dimming, "If I speak too harshly, you might feel humiliated, but if I speak gently, I might feel like I'm deceiving myself. Let's end this, Edward. I'm begging you."
With that, Gilbert and Evelyn left his tear-filled sight.
She never looked back.
Edward stood alone in the snow for an unknown amount of time, until he turned into a snow sculpture, until his legs went weak and he knelt in the snow. Only then did Bart arrive.
Bart asked, "Mr. Wellington! Where's Mrs. Wellington? Did she leave?"
Edward hung his head low, clutching the ice cream she had thrown away, letting it slowly melt.
The melting liquid dripped down, mingling with the tears streaming from his red eyes.
Edward said sadly, "She never believed in me. She can stop loving me, but how can she not trust me? Should I keep holding on? Is there any point?"
The luxury car drove towards the hospital.
Evelyn and Gilbert sat side by side in the back seat, the atmosphere unbearably oppressive.
"Evelyn, are you mad at me?"
Gilbert turned his head, worriedly gazing at her cold profile, "I'm sorry, I was just too worried about you."
Evelyn said, "Meeting Edward has nothing to do with you. You don't need to blame yourself."
Gilbert took a deep breath, clearly sensing her continued resistance towards him.
Evelyn expressionlessly lowered her eyes and took out her phone, opening the call log.
Indeed, there was no record of Edward's name.
"I called you many times tonight, but you didn't answer! I thought something had happened to you. I've been worried about you all night!"
Edward wouldn't lie about something like that.
Even if it were a lie, why would he go through the trouble of calling her from another number afterward?
Suddenly, Evelyn thought of something, held her breath, and opened the blocked contacts list.
When she saw Edward's name quietly lying there, a heavy shadow clouded her eyes.
