Chapter 295: The Person Who Enjoys the First Snow with Her
Dinner was filled with joy and laughter.
Originally, Gilbert had prepared a bottle of vintage red wine, but Angela insisted that Evelyn drink juice, so Evelyn spent the evening drinking various juices, such as orange juice, grape juice, pineapple juice.
After dinner, Patricia took Angela to play, also to create a chance for Gilbert and Evelyn to be alone.
Gilbert showed Evelyn around his villa and also let her admire his collection of oil paintings.
Evelyn stood in front of the desk, bending over with a magnifying glass to appreciate the paintings. Her beautiful eyes sparkled, revealing her love for the art.
"Do you like it? If you do, I'll pack it up for you to take home," Gilbert said, leaning on the edge of the bed, smiling as he looked at her.
She admired the painting, and he admired her.
"Pack it up? You should know that everything here is very expensive, and you want me to take it all?"
Evelyn straightened up, playfully looking at Gilbert through the magnifying glass and blinking, "Are you really a collector? If you were a true enthusiast like my dad, you wouldn't let anyone touch your treasures, let alone give them away."
Gilbert smiled, replying in a low and charming voice, "I'm only generous to two people — you and Uncle Charlie."
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat, and she bit her lip.
"My dad is very greedy. If he knows you have valuable collections and sees your generosity, he won't stop until he takes all your treasures."
"If Uncle Charlie likes it, he can have it. I have no other talents, but if these things can please him, I won't hesitate to give them away," Gilbert said sincerely.
"What about you? Besides a share of the Alexander family fortune, is there anything you want?" Evelyn asked meaningfully.
Gilbert's eyes were full of affection as he softly said in his heart, 'You.'
"It's snowing, Evelyn," but what he said out loud was something else.
"Really?" Evelyn's face lit up. Her beautiful eyes filled with excitement, sparkling like stars.
She loved snowy days. When she was very young, Victoria would hold her in the backyard to watch the snow, pulling her hands to slide on the ice.
"Let's go watch the snow."
Gilbert took Evelyn to the balcony. As soon as he opened the door, she was deeply attracted by the beautiful scene.
Snow was falling heavily, like cotton being torn apart, fluttering down.
"It's so beautiful!" Evelyn looked up at the night sky, exclaiming in excitement.
Standing behind her, Gilbert quickly draped his suit jacket over her shoulders. His voice was unbelievably gentle, "The snow is beautiful, but it's not good to catch a cold."
Evelyn felt the coldness in her body dissipate with the warmth from Gilbert's suit.
She turned her face slightly, meeting Gilbert's intense gaze.
Gilbert's heartbeat grew stronger as his breathing became rapid.
"Your glasses are fogging up. Can you still see the snow?" Evelyn asked seriously.
Gilbert was slightly taken aback, then smiled faintly. His eyes full of undisguised affection for her.
He thought, 'Evelyn, do you know? There's a saying on Aurora Isle: If you want to marry her, watch the first snow together.'
Evelyn was full of joy, she didn't mind her pretty face flushed red from the cold. She raised her hand to catch the snowflakes.
Gilbert's eyes deepened, and in his emotional state, he had the urge to grab her hand and never let go.
At that moment, the phone rang inappropriately.
Evelyn glanced at the screen, her expression changing slightly.
Edward's name still held significant weight in her eyes to this day.
Seeing Edward's call, a cold glint flashed across Gilbert's gold-rimmed glasses, and he softly called, "Evelyn."
Evelyn's eyes darkened, but she chose to answer the call.
Instantly, Gilbert's eyes were filled with disappointment. His heart was full of hatred for Edward.
At this moment, Edward was looking at the bright window. He didn't know behind which window Evelyn was, nor did he know if he could see her.
His voice was deep and hoarse, "Evelyn, it's snowing. This is the first snow of the winter in Mugden."
"Yes," Evelyn's face was expressionless, "So why are you calling? What's the matter?"
Edward was momentarily speechless, then he mustered the courage to sincerely ask, "Can I invite you to watch the snow together tonight?"
"What kind of relationship do we have? Do you think it's appropriate?"
"It's more appropriate than with Gilbert."
Evelyn felt both angry and amused, "I don't think so."
"Evelyn, I won't leave tonight until I see you," Edward said stubbornly.
"If you don't leave, I won't leave here tonight," Evelyn was even more stubborn.
"Evelyn, are you trying to piss me off?" Edward's eyes reddened. He clutched his chest with his left hand, feeling suffocated and tasting blood in his throat, "Are you planning to stay at Gilbert's house? Do you know what you're doing?"
A surge of anger welled up in Evelyn.
She turned her back to Gilbert, walked to a corner, and took a deep breath, speaking in a low and sober voice, "Edward, I'm very grateful to you for saving my life last time, but that doesn't mean you can use it to coerce me into doing things I don't want to do."
"I just want to watch the first snow of winter with you, that's all!"
"But I don't want to! Edward, I don't want to at all!"
Evelyn's outburst of anger startled both Edward and Gilbert.
Gilbert couldn't help but quickly walk up behind her, gently holding her trembling shoulders.
"Evelyn, what's wrong?" Gilbert whispered softly, his lips close to her ear.
Edward heard every word!
Evelyn closed her reddened eyes, her body shaking uncontrollably. Images of Christmas Eve two years ago flashed through her mind.
That Christmas Eve, Mugden had its first snow of the season.
In her memories, there was a car accident, blood, and the loss of her unborn child, barely two months along.
The miscarriage caused her such excruciating pain that she felt torn apart, brutally separated from her child in a bloody ordeal. They had never met, yet were already parted forever.
What was Edward doing at that time?
He had gone to Mythorica for Nicole, just to spend Christmas with her.
Before she passed out after sending Byron to the hospital, she had called Edward, but all she got was the cold busy tone.
Evelyn panted for air as if she were drowning, the pain like a tidal wave threatening to engulf her. Her vision went black, and she felt her body losing balance.
"Evelyn!" Gilbert caught her just as she was about to fall, holding her tightly in his arms. His deep, dark eyes were filled with rampant, growing hatred.
Edward stood alone in the freezing snow, covered by a layer of white.
He waited foolishly, prepared to stay there all night.
The iron gate outside the villa opened.
Edward's spirits lifted as if revived!
However, the next moment, his heart sank — the person approaching with a pale, grim face was Gilbert.
"Where's Evelyn?" Edward clenched his fists, staring at him intensely.
With a cold smile playing on his lips, Gilbert adjusted his glasses, his eyes full of the arrogance of a victor, "She's staying at my house tonight. She won't be going back or watching snow with you. She's already resting.
If you have any decency or shame left, leave immediately. I need to go back and be with her."
Edward felt as if he had been struck by lightning, his voice tight and hoarse, "Gilbert, are you proud of yourself? The only reason you can be with Evelyn is because of your scheming and manipulation!"
"So what?" Gilbert's wolfish, ruthless gaze was undisguised, a stark contrast to his demeanor in front of Evelyn, "I have no regrets; I'm willing to go to great lengths for Evelyn.
Unlike some people who pretend to be deeply in love in front of Evelyn."
"Gilbert!" Edward roared, his voice trembling. The taste of blood stronger in his throat.
"As far as I know, you never spent a single holiday with Evelyn in your three years of marriage with her, did you? The first Valentine's Day, the second Christmas, and even Ms. Adam's birthday, you spent all of them with Ms. Adam, didn't you?"
Gilbert laughed mockingly, "On such a romantic night, you should be with Ms. Adams. Are you trying to humiliate Evelyn by coming to see her?"
Edward's face turned ashen, his heart feeling as if it was being twisted by a knife.
"Edward, as your rival and opponent, I investigated these things because I care about Evelyn. I will protect her and never let her go through the same pain again," Gilbert's eyes were devoid of any warmth, cold and piercing, "Get lost. Someone as filthy inside and out as you doesn't deserve to be by Evelyn's side."
Gilbert left, the world around him silent.
Standing alone in the wind and snow, Edward seemed frozen, unresponsive for a long time.
He bent over sharply, covering his mouth.
His eyes widened, feeling a warm wetness in his palm.
Thick blood dripped onto the ground, mixing with the snow.
Gilbert returned to the villa but didn't rush to check on Evelyn, who was still unconscious.
He entered the study, pulling up the surveillance footage from outside the villa on his computer.
Gilbert leisurely sat in his leather chair, intending to enjoy the sight of Edward's defeat, but he saw something even more surprising!
In the footage, Edward was kneeling on one knee in the snow, struggling to breathe, his mouth full of blood!
It was blood.
He was coughing up blood?
"Edward, tonight you have truly given me a huge surprise."
Gilbert's eyes never left the screen as he took out his phone and called Curtis.
"Mr. Alexander, what are your orders?"
"Find out about Edward's recent health, including any illnesses, injuries, and the hospital he visited. Report back to me."
