Chapter 273 Men Who Cannot Touch Evelyn
Jennifer was already a bit buzzed, but when William suddenly hugged her, she snapped out of it a little.
"Ms. Jennifer Taylor, watch out."
Seeing her wobble, William thought she was super drunk. His eyes filled with worry as he quickly wrapped his long arm around her waist, holding her tighter.
Suddenly, he felt an intense longing for her, and his heart skipped a beat.
Her waist felt so soft and delicate in his hand that he momentarily lost himself, sighing inwardly.
But he quickly pulled himself together, his handsome face showing no sign of his inner turmoil.
"William, you take Jennifer back tonight!" Evelyn, always meticulous, had let her guard down in front of her families and hadn't noticed the subtle tension between the two. She waved at them casually and left, arm in arm with Landon.
With just the two of them left, the atmosphere suddenly got awkward, making them both feel a bit lost.
"Evelyn, Evelyn!" Jennifer called out weakly, her face flushed, her heart racing.
"Ms. Jennifer Taylor, don't worry." William's gaze was gentle as he said seriously, "I promised Ms. Evelyn Taylor I'd get you back to school safely."
"No need, William. I just had a little to drink; I'm not really drunk." Jennifer bit her pink lips, lowered her head, and gently pushed him away, trying to prove she wasn't drunk.
But William was really worried about her, so he held her again. "You say you're not drunk, but last time you said the same thing and yet..."
He didn't finish the sentence, and both of them froze.
Suddenly, the memory of that emotionally charged kiss from that night came rushing back.
William stared at Jennifer, his mind in chaos, feeling a vague, indescribable emotion stirring in his chest.
"William, last time I drank too much. I'm sorry." Jennifer's eyes were filled with panic and guilt, turning red.
A braver girl, certain of her love, would have taken this opportunity to confess her feelings.
But Jennifer, like Joyce, was timid and insecure. Even though William was kind and gentle, and even though that kiss had really happened, she could only bury her love deep in her heart because she knew William was the man she couldn't touch.
"Ms. Taylor." William's voice was hoarse, his Adam's apple bobbing as he tentatively asked, "Was that your first kiss?"
"It doesn't matter, William. I was drunk; don't think too much about it." Jennifer forced a smile.
"So, it was really your first kiss?" The immense guilt felt like a sharp pair of tweezers, pinching his heart painfully. He took a step back and bowed deeply to Jennifer. "I'm sorry, Ms. Taylor. It was my fault and negligence! Tell me, how can I make it up to you?"
Jennifer's fluttering heart suddenly froze. Seeing the guy she liked only feel guilt and respect for her, Jennifer felt like her insides were being flooded with bitterness.
"It really doesn't matter, William." Jennifer took a deep breath, holding back the tears that were about to spill, and reached out to help him up. "If you really want to make it up to me, then be extra good to Evelyn from now on."
On the way back, Evelyn leaned on Landon's shoulder, feeling a bit sleepy.
Actually, she had wanted to ask what Aaron had said to Edward.
But she changed her mind, knowing it wouldn't be anything good. Aaron seemed gentle, but his words could be harsher than hers sometimes.
She didn't want to know how he had scolded Edward. It wasn't that she felt sorry for Edward; she just didn't want to see the man she had once loved with all her heart being regarded as nothing by her brother. It would make her feel very defeated.
"Evelyn, are you asleep?" Landon suddenly asked softly.
"No, what's up, Landon?" Evelyn snapped out of her thoughts.
"Evelyn, have you noticed something?" Landon said.
Evelyn looked at Landon in surprise.
"Have you noticed that there's something a bit off between William and Jennifer?" Landon smiled faintly. "I don't know if I'm seeing things, but I always feel like there's something romantic between them."
Evelyn's eyes widened, her jaw almost dropping as she asked, "Landon, are you drunk? Are you joking with me?"
"I never joke about love. You were too caught up earlier to notice, but when William was helping Jennifer, their expressions were very strange, and their faces were red. Especially Jennifer, the way she looked at William was exactly the same as how you used to look at Edward."
Evelyn lowered her eyelids. "Landon, we are talking about Jennifer. Why bring that up?"
She complained, but her mind was already pondering the relationship between William and Jennifer. 'When did this happen? How did I not notice at all?'
"William is not young anymore, almost thirty. After graduating from college, he's been diligently working as my secretary, and now I've assigned him to assist you, and he has no complaints. He hasn't really taken a proper break year after year." Landon put his arm around Evelyn's shoulder, speaking earnestly, "If he wants to date and live a different life, I hope you can support him."
Evelyn suddenly pounded the car window with her fist, gritting her teeth. "Men are really no good! One moment he's professing his deep feelings for me, and the next he's falling for Jennifer. I only have one sister. If he has any inappropriate thoughts about Jennifer, I'll send him off to the wilderness!"
"William confessed to you?" Landon raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised.
"Yeah, but I turned him down right away." Evelyn had always been open with Landon, candidly sharing her thoughts. "It's not that he's not good enough; I just don't have feelings for him. Plus, I've been divorced and have no plans to love again. I don't want to waste his time. But how could he develop feelings for Jennifer so quickly? This seamless transition really worries me that Jennifer might get hurt."
"Evelyn, William isn't that kind of person. Maybe he has been around you for too long. You were his secret crush, his first love. He's used to caring for you, so he doesn't know his feeling for Jennifer," Landon suggested seriously.
"How could someone not know they've fallen for someone else?" Evelyn frowned, her expression tinged with doubt.
"Love is complex." Landon's deep, mysterious eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "For example, thirteen years later, Edward saved your life again. Can you clearly distinguish between love and hate when you face him now? Can you guarantee that all you feel for him is hatred, no love at all?"
Evelyn felt a sharp pain in her chest, her breathing heavy.
She remembered the night when she was in danger, Edward, severely injured, carried her through the storm for a long distance. She remembered in the dark, damp cave, he took off almost all his clothes to keep her warm.
It felt like boiling water was poured into her chest, making her clench her numb fingers tightly in discomfort.
'Why? Why can Edward be so good to Evelyn but be so heartless to Lily?' she thought.
"Landon, you know me. I've always been someone who loves and hates clearly. Maybe you're right; love is complex, but not for me. I know exactly what I want." Evelyn gazed out the window, her voice choked, her eyes red. "No matter how complicated my feelings for Edward are now, there's no love left in them. Risking my life and burning my entire youth to love someone, only to get hurt without any return—doing that once in a lifetime is enough."
William drove Jennifer back to school, both lost in their own thoughts, silent the entire way.
It was late at night, and it was quiet at the back gate of the school. The Porsche slowly came to a stop.
They sat side by side in the car, surprisingly in sync, neither mentioning getting out.
A silver moon cast a soft glow, and the quiet atmosphere in the car had a subtle, unspoken romance.
"William, thanks for bringing me back," Jennifer shyly broke the silence.
"Miss, you're welcome." William felt deep guilt towards Jennifer, and because of their different statuses, his words were even more distant than before. "Although I've watched both you and Ms. Evelyn Taylor grow up, I'm still her secretary, a subordinate serving the Taylor family."
Jennifer, sensitive and perceptive, naturally noticed that William was trying to keep his distance, and her heart ached. Her eyes, gazing forward, were like morning dew, wet and glistening.
"William, I won't trouble you anymore in the future. Please don't dislike me, okay?" Jennifer said humbly.
"Miss, you're overthinking it. You've never troubled me. I just don't want to affect your life in any way." William sighed softly, leaning forward to unbuckle her seatbelt.
Their breaths mingled, and the temperature in the car gradually rose.
William instinctively avoided her eyes, keeping his gaze lowered as he quickly straightened up. "It's late. I'll send you in."
With that, he opened the door and got out.
Recalling his words, Jennifer felt as if a dark hole had been dug in her heart, filled with cold and disappointment.
She knew there was no chance for them; that kiss was just an accident.
'How can a man as outstanding as William like an ordinary girl like me? I am too naive,' she thought.
The passenger door opened, and William, back to his usual respectful demeanor, invited Jennifer to get out.
Jennifer bit her pale lips and stepped out of the car.
"I can go in by myself. You don't need to walk me."
Before she finished speaking, the roar of an engine came from behind her, startling her into covering her ears and closing her eyes in fear!
Because of a near car accident in her childhood, she had a severe psychological shadow over the sound of speeding cars!
Seeing this, William furrowed his brows, and he quickly wrapped his arms around Jennifer, turning to shield her.
A silver-gray top-tier Ferrari sped past them, the wind lifting his suit, showing just how fast it was going!
"It's okay, it's okay. Don't be afraid, I'm here." William gently comforted her, softly patting the trembling Jennifer, his eyes filled with both tenderness for her and strong disapproval of the Ferrari's driver.
The Ferrari also stopped at the back gate of the school.
The passenger door opened, and out stepped a pair of long legs.
A young woman with wavy hair, wearing a sexy short skirt and exquisite makeup, lazily walked out.
