Chapter 507 Evelyn Takes the Stage
Everyone's eyes were on Charlie.
"What's wrong?" Charlie asked in a deep voice.
"Our jockey was injured by a crazy horse from another family while walking our horse outside!"
The Taylor family members looked at each other in shock.
"What?"
Charlie widened his eyes and asked anxiously, "How is he? Is he in any danger?"
Although Charlie was a decisive and ruthless capitalist in the business world, he was very kind-hearted towards his subordinates. His first thought was not about the competition, but the jockey's safety!
Hubert wiped his sweat, "No, he just has multiple bruises and a broken arm. I've already sent him to the hospital, but there's no way he can participate in the competition."
"As long as he's okay, as long as he's okay." Charlie let out a long breath.
"Whose horse injured him? They need to be held responsible." Joyce was gently reminded from the side.
"Don't worry, Joyce. Our Taylor family won't suffer injustice for nothing. I've already taken care of it; the other party must take full responsibility."
But now, without a jockey, does the Taylor family have to withdraw from the competition and give up such a big opportunity?
Charlie clenched his jaw, his face showing his unwillingness.
"Charlie, it's really a pity that your horse can't compete in such a big event."
Patrick said with a hint of regret, but couldn't help but smile, "But there's always next year, so you don't have to be too disappointed."
Charlie's expression grew even darker.
The Alexander family and the Clark family members also breathed a sigh of relief; after all, having one less competitor was a good thing.
"Pity? Patrick, you're speaking too soon."
Evelyn walked forward confidently, her delicate voice filled with determination, "The Taylor family never leaves regrets or returns defeated."
Patrick's expression stiffened, his chest tightening.
Her resolute words broke and reshaped the delicate atmosphere!
Edward squinted slightly, watching Evelyn with a gentle smile, secretly anticipating what surprise she would bring him this time.
"That bitch is showing off again!" Debra cursed under her breath.
"Hmph, she's just trying to save some dignity now that her family is about to be kicked out."
Jessica twirled her curls disdainfully, sneering, "What can she do? The competition is about to start; where will she find a replacement? If she's so capable, she should ride herself."
Unexpectedly, before her sneer faded, Evelyn calmly said, "Dad, let me represent our KnightSpear Group in the competition."
Everyone was shocked.
What did she mean?
Evelyn wanted to be the jockey? Could she do it?
Edward's heart trembled, staring at Evelyn's captivating figure in disbelief, his breath becoming erratic.
Jessica's eyes nearly popped out.
Debra chuckled, teasing, "Wow, you were right."
"Hmph! If she wants to show off, let her. Let's see how she embarrasses herself!" Jessica gritted her teeth, glaring viciously at Evelyn's confident face.
"Evelyn, can you do it?" Charlie asked worriedly, deeply skeptical.
"Dad, don't you know if I can or not?" Evelyn winked playfully at Charlie.
Charlie, Joyce, and Landon exchanged glances.
They all knew Evelyn could ride, but racing was a different matter.
"Charlie, horse racing is no small matter, and this competition concerns business cooperation and the reputation of the four families."
Maurice looked disdainfully at the arrogant Evelyn, "Not participating is one thing, but if you fall, how heartbroken would Charlie be?"
They were convinced that Evelyn's participation would only bring shame.
"Yes, Charlie, look at the competitors; is there a single woman among them? Is it appropriate for her to compete?"
Jessica joined in mocking Evelyn, "We know you're competitive, but you have to know your limits."
"Jessica, do you think women are unfit for horse riding, or do you think women are inferior to men?"
Evelyn's cold gaze swept over Jessica's face, her lips curling mockingly, "As far as I know, Mrs. Delilah Clark was an equestrian expert in her youth."
"In a time when Americans had little knowledge of equestrian sports, Delilah Roberts represented the country in international equestrian competitions and won a gold medal."
"Jessica, are you saying Delilah's actions were inappropriate, too? You can look down on me, but you shouldn't look down on your own family, right?"
"You!" Jessica's face turned red with shame and anger, choking on her words.
Maurice glanced at the rash Jessica, shaking his head in disapproval.
"Eric."
Molly, with her slender shoulders hunched, gripped Eric's hand tightly, asking timidly, "Evelyn has definitely offended Jessica. Isn't she afraid?"
"Afraid? Why would she be? Even the cold-hearted Edward bows to her; what is there for her to fear?" Eric laughed, holding her cold hand gently, warming it.
"That's not what I meant." Molly lowered her head deeply, whispering softly, "I'm afraid Jessica will bully Evelyn."
"Molly, what did you say?" Eric didn't hear clearly.
"Nothing."
Molly shook her head repeatedly.
Countless broken, unbearable memories flooded back like a nightmare. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes, forcing herself not to think about it, but her smooth forehead gradually became soaked with cold sweat.
Evelyn smiled sweetly at Maurice, her beautiful eyes shining brightly, "Maurice, thank you for your concern, but I never show off. I am determined to win this competition!"
Maurice was suddenly taken aback, his view of Evelyn changing slightly.
Moreover, her fearless demeanor when she said this was very much like Delilah in her youth!
If Jessica weren't his granddaughter and he didn't have to support her, he would have to admit that Evelyn was truly outstanding.
If Eric were dating Evelyn, that would be worth considering.
"Dad, Joyce, Landon, there's not much time left. I'll go change now."
After speaking, Evelyn waved cheerfully at them and turned to walk out of the arena with Hubert accompanying her.
"Evelyn! Be careful!" Joyce called out, her eyes full of worry.
Evelyn looked back and gave her an "OK" gesture.
"Alright, Evelyn can't sit still. Let her give it a try," Charlie said, though he was naturally worried; he didn't want to show it too much.
Edward's intense gaze followed Evelyn until she disappeared.
"Are you surprised? Didn't expect Evelyn to know how to ride a horse, did you?"
His brows furrowed as Gilbert walked up to him with a smile.
The two handsome men stood side by side, like a beautiful painting.
However, they were like water and fire, harboring deep hatred for each other.
"Evelyn is a gift from God to me."
Edward's voice was deep, "Since she's a gift, she naturally brings me surprises all the time."
"Tch, you clearly don't understand Evelyn at all. Why dress up your lack of understanding and insecurity with such grandiose words?"
Edward's breath hitched, his fingers slowly curling into a fist.
"Evelyn and I grew up together. The things we've been through and our understanding of each other are far beyond what you can imagine. Don't think that just because you've temporarily swayed her with your schemes, she'll always belong to you. Don't think you've truly won her over."
Gilbert lowered his voice, his smile cold and contemptuous, "Dreams are pleasant, but waking up from them is painful."
"Understanding each other? Have you really let Evelyn understand you, Gilbert?"
Edward's eyes were like a deep, dark vortex. "When you and Sebastian secretly conspired and sent people to the South Island to try to kill Landon, did you let Evelyn see that ruthless side of you?"
"Edward, don't provoke me."
Gilbert's smile remained, but a chilling, murderous aura emanated from him, "You'll regret it."
Edward's thin lips curved into a smile, his handsome face exuding an overwhelming sense of oppression, "Then I look forward to seeing what happens when I provoke you, you mad dog. I'm very curious."
Jessica downed three glasses of champagne in a row, but it still couldn't extinguish the raging fire in her heart!
She sat alone in the hallway of the lounge area. When no one was around, she pulled out a cigarette and took a deep drag. Just by looking at her smoking posture, it was clear she smoked often.
"Smoking and drinking. Look at what Evelyn has done to our lovely little princess."
With a teasing laugh, Debra walked in, lifting her dress.
"Bullying? She can't bully me. I just don't want to stoop to her level!" Jessica squinted, taking a deep drag, her eyes bloodshot.
Debra was tired of her big talk and didn't bother to expose her. She sat beside her and lit a cigarette, too.
"Anyway, no matter how arrogant Evelyn is, Edward can only be mine. The position of Mrs. Wellington Group President can only be mine!" Jessica expressed her desire fiercely.
Debra secretly stuck out her tongue. I think the most arrogant person here is you!
After a moment of silence, she sighed and continued to fan the flames, "Even if you manage to marry Edward, your life won't be easy. Edward is clearly deeply in love with Evelyn. Betraying you is just a matter of time."
Jessica stubbed out her cigarette, her mind filled with chaotic images, each one more humiliating than the last!
"Unless Evelyn is dead, nothing will be resolved!"
"That's easy for you to say. Your Clark family might be good at dealing with others, but Evelyn's family is much stronger than yours. Can you really kill her? If you could, why is she still alive?"
Debra extinguished her cigarette in the ashtray. "I heard that Evelyn is quite skilled in equestrian. She was the local youth equestrian champion at ten and even had international interviews. We just didn't know about it. This time, Evelyn is bound to steal the spotlight again. It seems we have no chance."
Jessica's expression darkened, brewing a malicious plan, "Who says we don't? Today is a good opportunity. If she wants to be in the spotlight, I'll make sure she doesn't come back in one piece!"
"What do you have in mind?" Debra asked eagerly.
"This horse race is not just about the four families' reputation but also about important business cooperation. So, I not only want to humiliate Evelyn, but I also want the KnightSpear Group to lose this big project. Gavin and Sawyer must not choose them!"
Jessica's family was also had a stable, and she had some knowledge about horses. Her eyes gleamed with malice, "If we want Evelyn to fail, we need to make her horse fall first!"
Debra's breath hitched, immediately understanding.
Although she disliked Jessica, she had to admit that her methods were ruthless and bold!
Half an hour later, the competition entered its final preparation stage.
Evelyn led SilverSteed, whose dark coat gleamed in the sunlight, out of the stable, gently stroking its mane.
But SilverSteed seemed off, breathing heavily and hanging its head, lacking spirit.
"What's wrong with SilverSteed? Is it sick?" Evelyn asked worriedly.
The horse trainer, who had been taking care of SilverSteed with the injured jockey, sighed, "Evelyn, SilverSteed is the most sensitive horse in our stable. It had a special bond with the jockey. Seeing the jockey injured, how could SilverSteed feel good? Its low spirits naturally affect its fighting spirit."
"Such a kind horse, more reliable than many men nowadays."
Evelyn was moved, leaning close to SilverSteed's ear and speaking softly, in a way that would make even Edward jealous, "SilverSteed!"
SilverSteed neighed, as if understanding her.
"I know you're not feeling well today, and it's a bit much to ask you to compete. But your good friend has been preparing for this race for over two months. If he can't compete, he'll be very sad. SilverSteed, you're a horse with feelings. You don't want to disappoint your friend, do you?"
Evelyn whispered more words into its ear.
Miraculously, SilverSteed's condition visibly improved.
Evelyn's beautiful eyes curved into a smile, and she gracefully mounted the horse, exuding pride and nobility that made people avert their gaze.
The horse trainer couldn't help but sigh!
Evelyn tightened the reins, and SilverSteed raised its front hooves.
"Let's go!"
