Chapter 135 Closer to You, More Important Than You
Evelyn spun around, startled.
Her eyes were cold, like she didn't recognize him.
A few steps away, Edward stood alone, watching her with Gilbert. His tall frame shook, feeling like he was falling apart.
He bit his lip and looked down, noticing her bandaged arm. His heart clenched, and he stepped forward instinctively.
"Your hand."
But Evelyn stepped back, letting Gilbert move in front of her protectively.
Edward's throat tightened, glaring at Gilbert as if sparks were flying.
"Most people say 'third time's the charm,' but I believe 'second time's enough." Gilbert adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes sharp. "You've already taken her from me once tonight. Think I'll let you do it again?"
"What are you to her?" Edward asked coldly, eyes intense.
He was tricked by Evelyn's brothers before and worried this guy was another of Charlie's sons. But the way Gilbert looked at Evelyn, with such deep affection, wasn't how a relative would.
"Someone closer and more important to her than you," Evelyn said coldly.
Gilbert looked at her deeply, a satisfied smile on his lips.
"Edward, I told you at the KTV entrance. Why are you still obsessed with this? What's the point?"
Edward's eyes reddened. "Evelyn, don't you know what's good for you? You're getting drunk with a stranger. I'm worried he'll take advantage of you."
Evelyn frowned, disgusted. "Other people's concern is sincere, but yours is disgusting. I've already thrown up once tonight. Don't make me do it again."
Her words were cutting.
Edward's pale lips trembled, his heart aching.
Tonight's events had shaken his fragile spirit, and his headache pounded. He felt on the verge of breaking down.
'Why can't I let her go after we ended? Am I regretting the divorce?' Edward spiraled into self-doubt.
'Was I wrong from the start?'
"Edward! Ms. Adams is out of danger!"
Bart came running, shouting, not noticing Evelyn.
When he saw her, it was too late.
Seeing Edward and Evelyn's dark expressions, he wished he could slap himself!'
"So you already has someone else." Gilbert's eyes mocked, "Then why are you still bothering Ms. Taylor?"
Edward's eyes darkened, and Bart was stunned.
Evelyn's eyes widened in shock as she thought, 'He knows who I am?!'
"Since you're divorced, stop clinging. It's about principle and courtesy." Gilbert's icy gaze swept over Edward, "If you can't be a good man, at least be decent."
"What are you saying? How can you insult Edward like that?!" Bart's face turned red with anger, stepping forward to defend Edward.
"Alright, ignore him. Let's go back," Evelyn called to Gilbert, not wanting a scene.
"Okay." Gilbert's expression softened, and he returned to Evelyn's side.
Edward watched them walk away, feeling like his heart had stopped and his blood had turned to ice as he thought, 'She's already with someone else.'
Edward clutched his chest, wondering how his heart could hurt so much, like it had been ripped out.
Only now did he truly feel they were divorced.
In the underground parking lot, William quickly approached Gilbert and Evelyn, asking, "Evelyn, how's your injury?"
"It's nothing. What about the culprit?" Evelyn asked, focused.
"Don't worry, I've got him locked up. He won't escape," William whispered.
"Good. William, we need to make a big move soon," Evelyn said, her eyes dangerous.
William nodded, "Always ready!"
"Wait, I need to say goodbye to him."
Evelyn walked over to Gilbert, who stood by the Bentley, looking elegant.
"Tonight, you saw it. My relationship with Edward is complicated."
Evelyn met Gilbert's smiling face, feeling guilty. "I had no choice but to involve you. I'm sorry."
"No need to apologize. It's an honor to help you," Gilbert said, his voice charming.
Evelyn felt even more embarrassed. "If you need me again, just ask," Gilbert added with a smile.
"You're joking," Evelyn said, smiling bitterly. "I hope there won't be a next time."
"Don't let your wound get wet for a week. It's late, go home," Gilbert said, reluctantly. He turned to get into the car.
"Wait!" Evelyn knocked on the window.
The window rolled down, and Gilbert looked at her with smiling eyes.
"You called me Ms. Taylor in front of Edward. How did you know my last name? Did you know who I was from the start?" Evelyn asked, curious.
"Yes," he answered truthfully, looking into her eyes.
"I never show my face in public. How did you know? Have we met before?" Evelyn asked, eyes sparkling.
Gilbert smiled slightly, "I'll tell you next time we meet."
Curtis and the bodyguards got into the car, and the two luxury cars drove away.
Evelyn suddenly remembered, "I forgot to ask his name again!"
The Bentley sped through the night of Mugden.
Gilbert stared out the window, thinking of Evelyn's captivating face. 'Evelyn, I don't expect to meet you this way.'
"Mr. Alexander, I checked Edward and Ms. Taylor's relationship. There's no record of their marriage! But they just divorced this month," Curtis said, looking at his iPad. "Ms. Taylor is single!"
"It doesn't matter. She said I'm closer and more important to her than Edward," Gilbert said, still moved by her words.
"Congratulations, Mr. Alexander! You won the first round, overshadowing Edward!" Curtis said, happy for him.
"That's not enough."
Gilbert's usually cold eyes softened, "I want her heart and eyes to have only me."
