Chapter 491 Guilt

When Evelyn first started elementary school, she was very popular with the boys because of her beauty, which made many girls in the class jealous.

At that time, there was a girl in her class who was spoiled by her family and didn't like Evelyn. Even at a young age, she isolated Evelyn. Although she didn't cause her any physical harm, she bullied her in private—tearing up her homework, stealing her hair clips, and even pouring dirty water into her water bottle.

Fortunately, young Evelyn was smart and broad-minded. She easily saw through these tricks and avoided them, not taking them to heart.

She didn't want Charlie to worry, so she never mentioned what happened at school when she got home. Her maturity was heartbreaking.

Until one day, that girl sat behind Evelyn in class and cut off her long hair.

Evelyn came back with her hair in a mess, and only then did Charlie learn about the kind of life she had been living at school.

That day, Charlie, who was usually so powerful in the mall, had red-rimmed eyes and almost cried. Instead, it was Evelyn who smiled brightly and comforted him.

Later, it was heard that the girl dropped out of school three days later.

Her family's business went bankrupt, her father went to jail, and her mother, knowing she had offended Evelyn, lived in constant fear and eventually succumbed to a serious illness.

This showed that it was a miracle Charlie hadn't acted against Edward yet.

And the creator of this miracle was Evelyn.

If it weren't for Evelyn repeatedly telling him not to touch Edward, he would have had him assassinated by now!

Maybe he wouldn't even need to do it himself; Landon and Ulysses would have killed him long ago!

"Dad, the failure of my marriage with Edward, I also bear a lot of responsibility."

Evelyn said seriously, "It was me who wanted to be with him so badly back then, who wanted to have him. Even though I knew he didn't like me, I insisted on marrying him."

"If it were you, could you accept a woman you didn't love? Especially when he had someone else in his heart at that time."

"Evelyn! Are you crazy? There are so many good men in the world, why did you have to be with him?"

Charlie slammed his large hand on the coffee table in anger, his eyes red with rage. "I don't care who he had in his heart at that time, he could have chosen not to marry you if he didn't like you! Once he married you, he should have taken on the responsibility of a husband!"

"But what did he do? As an illegitimate child who wasn't favored in his family, he couldn't withstand the pressure from Byron and had to give up his old love to marry a woman he didn't love!"

"I despise such cowardly behavior from the bottom of my heart! He doesn't deserve to be your man, to be my son-in-law!"

Evelyn's hands on her knees slowly clenched into fists, her heart feeling as heavy as a stone, making it hard to breathe.

"Dad, it's not what you think."

"Don't say another word, I don't want to hear it! Break it off with him immediately, cleanly! Don't make me take action myself!"

Charlie was furious, his voice cold and resolute, "Now that the news of your secret marriage and divorce has spread, you shouldn't have any ties with the Wellington family! If you continue to be entangled with Edward, what will people think of you?"

"They won't care if you two are in love; they'll just think that no one else wants you except Edward!"

"If you don't care about your reputation, do you not care about the Taylor family's reputation either?"

"You know me, I never care about what others think. No one can stop me from doing what I want to do. I love Edward, and no one can stop that." Evelyn's voice was as cold as ice, firm and resolute.

"You!"

Charlie felt a rush of blood to his head, his vision suddenly going dark, and he quickly grabbed the armrest of the sofa, his body swaying!

"Dad, Dad?"

Evelyn's face instantly turned pale, and she rushed forward, kneeling in front of Charlie to support his trembling body. "What's wrong? Where are you feeling unwell, Dad?"

"Charlie!"

Donna, Joyce, and Susan were also frightened and quickly came over to check on Charlie.

"I'm fine, don't make a fuss." Charlie closed his eyes tightly, trying to suppress the severe headache, his body barely able to stay balanced.

"Dad! Lie down quickly!"

Evelyn and Susan immediately laid him flat on the sofa, while Joyce, with tears in her eyes, took out her phone to call for emergency help.

Donna, on the other hand, remained particularly calm, quickly taking out two bottles of medicine from a drawer under the desk and giving Charlie a few pills.

"Charlie, take your medicine!"

Charlie swallowed the pills, drank some water, and lay back down, his tightly furrowed brows relaxing a bit.

Evelyn picked up the medicine bottle and looked at it closely. The next second, she covered her mouth in shock, tears almost bursting out.

"Stroke medication."

"It's medication for treating strokes, developed by our family's pharmaceutical company. The annual production is limited, and many people pay a lot of money to get it."

Donna looked at Charlie, who still had a trace of pain on his face, unable to hide her heartache. "But starting this year, the medication has been less effective in controlling his condition. In fact, he had two episodes early last year, both of which he got through with the help of the medication."

"You, you all knew? Only I didn't know?" Evelyn's tears fell like pearls, her heart breaking.

"No, Landon and Simon don't know either. Your dad didn't want us to tell the kids, afraid you'd worry and be scared."

Donna also knelt, taking out a handkerchief to gently wipe the sweat from Charlie's forehead. "Evelyn, don't be mad at your dad. He just loves you too much, afraid you'll get hurt, afraid others will look down on you. His concern makes him irrational."

"Look down on? Who dares." Susan's voice was hoarse, her eyes red with anger. "Evelyn is the daughter of the Taylor family. If anyone dares to look down on her, I'll gouge out their eyes! I'll cut out their tongues for spreading rumors!"

Evelyn tightly held Charlie's cold hand, bowing her head deeply.

She felt very guilty. She had been willful and reckless, running around the world for Edward, ignoring her family. She didn't even know about Charlie's health condition.

Just then, there was a knock on the door.

Donna composed herself and quickly walked to the door. "What's the matter?"

"Mrs. Taylor, there's a guest. They're waiting outside." The butler said respectfully.

"A guest? At this time, who is it?"

"Mr. Alexander, the fourth son of the Alexander family."

Evelyn's eyes darkened, and she slowly stood up, a cold chill rising around her.

"Aunt Donna, you stay here and take care of Dad. I'll go see him."

Evelyn walked out of Oasis Villa with heavy steps.

Under the luxurious porch light, Gilbert stood there alone, waiting patiently. In the light and shadow, his features were gentle and soft, his eyes calm and serene.

He didn't look like a sinister, scheming, evil person at all.

Hearing the door open, Gilbert quickly looked up, his beautiful eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses filled with a joyful smile, his upturned lips radiating warmth like the sun.

"Evelyn." He called her, full of deep emotion.

Evelyn's stunningly beautiful face was as cold as snow, and she walked step by step to him.

"Evelyn."

"What's the matter?" Her tone was extremely cold, with no trace of the closeness of the past.

Gilbert felt a stab in his heart, clenched his fingers, and looked at her with concern. "I attended an event today and saw Uncle Charlie. He looked very unwell in the VIP lounge, barely holding on to finish the event. I couldn't stop worrying after I got home, so I came over to check on him."
