Chapter 331 Holding Hands
Edward realized something after falling in love with Evelyn.
Evelyn appeared incredibly tough on the outside, but in reality, she was soft-hearted, sincere, and kind.
He had nothing left to attract her, so he shamelessly played the victim to cling to her.
In the end, Evelyn couldn't leave the hospital room and reluctantly chose to stay.
Evelyn said, "Don't get me wrong, I'm staying not because of your plea, but because I promised Byron and Molly."
Evelyn steadied herself and sat down. "I'll rest in the next room tonight. If you need anything, call me, and I'll come over."
Edward quickly grabbed her soft hand. "Evelyn, stay here tonight."
"The sofa is uncomfortable; I can't sleep on it." Evelyn tried to pull her hand away but couldn't.
"We'll sleep on the bed," Edward said in a low voice as if he was coaxing her.
Edward explained, "Don't misunderstand, Evelyn. If you don't want to, I won't force you, even though I really miss you."
Edward couldn't help but move closer to her, his tall and commanding presence drawing her in.
"You stink, don't come near me!"
Evelyn backed away, pinching her nose with her other hand in disgust. "I don't want to sleep in the same room as you. I'm afraid I'll pass out from the smell in the middle of the night."
Edward replied, "Do I smell? It's not that bad."
Edward lifted his collar and sniffed. "When I was in the army, the conditions in the camp were harsh, and I couldn't take a bath for a week. I smelled much worse back then. When I returned to the Wellington family, I could take a bath every day. At first, I wasn't used to it."
Evelyn's eyes trembled slightly.
She knew his past and the hardship he endured better than anyone else in the world, except for him.
She didn't despise him; it was just that her emotional barriers were hard to overcome. Even though he was more sincere towards her now, she couldn't convince herself to get closer to him.
Edward continued, "Evelyn, how about I wipe myself down? Wait for me."
Edward was afraid Evelyn would refuse to stay in the same room with him, so he made a move to get out of bed.
Evelyn replied, "You can't get wet right now."
She pried Edward's fingers off one by one, her long lashes trembling. "I'll go freshen up."
Edward was actually quite weak, but he didn't want to show his vulnerable side in front of Evelyn.
At that moment, he leaned against the headboard, listening to the sound of running water from the bathroom.
It had been a long time since he felt such peace, such simple happiness.
Suddenly, Edward's eyes welled up, and he clenched the bedsheet tightly.
He remembered the times before their divorce when he had no patience for her. When she took a long time in the shower, he found it slow. When she did her skincare routine, he found it troublesome. When she prepared a table full of delicious dishes, he only thought she was wasting time.
Those mundane moments of their life together flashed before his eyes. Every scene that flashed before his eyes made his heart ache sharply.
The bathroom door opened.
Evelyn walked out gracefully.
Edward's pupils contracted instantly. Looking at Evelyn, his Adam's apple bobbed uneasily.
"I'm tired. You should sleep too." Evelyn spoke as she was about to lie down on the sofa.
There was a knock on the door, and Bart respectfully asked, "Mr. Wellington, have you and Mrs. Wellington gone to bed?"
Evelyn frowned and was about to speak, but Edward beat her to it. "No, come in."
.
The door opened. Bart and two bodyguards, sweating heavily, carried in an enormous bed!
"Mr. Wellington, the bed you ordered for Mrs. Wellington has arrived!" Bart replied and wiped his sweat vigorously.
"Thank you, set it up," Edward nodded.
Evelyn said, "Edward, what are you doing?"
"You can't sleep on the sofa, and you don't want to sleep in my bed, so I had to get you another bed," Edward said in a cold tone.
Evelyn was angry at his decision, so she got up and pounded the bed hard.
Outside the window, the cold winter wind howled.
Inside the room, it was quiet, warm, and cozy.
The two beds were next to each other. Although there was a gap between them, Edward already felt like they were sharing a bed.
Moreover, Bart had thoughtfully placed the beds as close together as possible.
By the time Evelyn noticed, it was too late. The three men had quickly left, and she couldn't move the bed by herself. Edward, being a patient, couldn't help her either.
Evelyn lay on her back on the bed, closed her eyes, and breathed evenly.
Edward also lay on his back, inhaling the faint fragrance from her hair, his heart pounding.
His palms were sweaty and hot, his fingers trembling slightly as they moved towards Evelyn.
"Behave yourself," Evelyn's clear voice suddenly broke the silence of the night.
Edward's fingers froze.
Evelyn warned him, "Or tonight will be the last time you have your right hand."
Sweat beaded on Edward's forehead, and he smiled helplessly.
Edward lay there and didn't know how long he had been lying down.
Finally, Evelyn's breathing became steady, and she fell asleep.
Edward's Adam's apple bobbed uncomfortably. He took a deep breath and slowly but firmly held her warm little hand.
He held it tightly, interlocking their fingers.
"Evelyn, I love you. Good night."
Edward closed his eyes contentedly and quickly fell asleep.
After a while, accompanied by soft snores, Evelyn quietly opened her eyes, clenched her fingers, and felt her heart pounding.
"Good night."
After taking care of Edward for two days, Evelyn returned to Hameen's house.
She hadn't been home for several days and was worried about Joyce, so she needed to check on her. On the other hand, she wanted to ask Donna if there was any way to completely cure or effectively control Edward's aftereffects.
After all, even though she was the White God, she couldn't cure every illness.
"Jennifer, how is Joyce doing?" Evelyn asked with concern as she hugged the red-eyed Jennifer.
Jennifer replied, "She has been hiding in her room and refused to see anyone. Yesterday, she didn't eat a single bite, and the light in her room stayed on all night. I'm afraid she didn't sleep at all."
Jennifer's eyes welled up with tears. She choked up, "I'm really scared that she's so upset she might hurt herself!"
"She won't. Although she seems fragile, she's actually very strong inside. She won't be easily defeated, so don't overthink it." Evelyn patted Jennifer's trembling back and felt how much weight she had lost, which made her embrace feel bony.
Her heart ached with sadness and anger.
"Evelyn, you're finally back."
William walked over, with dark circles under his eyes. "Don't worry, I've been taking turns with two other bodyguards to watch over Mrs. Taylor. She won't be in any life-threatening danger, you can rest assured."
Evelyn said, "Joyce has bodyguards, servants, Aunt Donna, Aunt Susan, and my dad watching over her. I left you at home to take good care of Jennifer. Look at how you've taken care of her! She's lost weight!"
Already filled with anger, Evelyn couldn't help but vent it on William.
William felt deeply guilty and could only keep apologizing, "I'm sorry, Evelyn, I'm sorry. It's my fault for not taking good care of her. Please punish me."
"Evelyn, don't punish William! He's already very busy and tired, and he's been taking good care of me. He's really done his best, don't blame him, okay?" Jennifer's face turned pale with fear and constantly pleaded, afraid of causing trouble for William.
"A mistake is a mistake. William, I punish you for taking to Jennifer out for some relaxation. Go to the best restaurant in Hameen and have a good meal, and take her to her favorite dessert place. Don't come back until it's dark, got it?" Evelyn said with an uncompromising expression.
Jennifer was stunned, "Evelyn."
William's heart skipped a beat, and he looked at Jennifer with a gentle smile in his eyes, "Jennifer, I'll go with you anywhere you want to go."
Evelyn persuaded, "Jennifer, don't worry."
Evelyn saw through Jennifer's thoughts and lovingly stroked her long hair, "I'll take care of things at home. You've worked hard these past few days and need to rest. Being too stressed is bad for your health. Go out and relax with William."
After sending off William and Jennifer with much persuasion, Evelyn didn't rush to see Joyce but went to find Donna.
"Don't go see her yet. She won't even see your dad, which shows how deeply she's been affected. She needs some time alone to calm down." Donna's expression was gloomy, recalling the events of that day, feeling very sad.
Evelyn replied, "I'll try to talk to Joyce later."
Evelyn pressed her lips together and was staying silent for a while before speaking softly, "Aunt Donna, I have an unreasonable request."
Donna said, "What are you saying? Don't worry about being polite with me."
Donna looked at her with a mix of reproach and affection and gently poked her cheek with her fingertip, "If you keep being so polite, don't come to me for help in the future!"
Evelyn giggled and rested her head on Donna's shoulder, "I was wrong. I'll get straight to the point. Aunt Donna, I remember you mentioned before that your nephew is an extremely talented neurosurgeon in Mythorica. The youngest PhD in the history of Mythorica Royal College of Medicine?"
"Are you talking about Adrian Mays?" Donna frowned slightly.
Evelyn replied, "Yes, Adrian."
Evelyn blushed with embarrassment, "Could you possibly invite him over? I have something to ask of him."
Donna blinked and scrutinized her for a moment, "What? Are you two in an online relationship?"
Evelyn remained silent.
Evelyn furrowed her brows and smiled, "Aunt Donna! What are you thinking! I need him for an urgent matter!
Evelyn continued, "Last time in the parking lot, Edward suffered a severe head injury while saving me. Although he had surgery, he still has aftereffects. My abilities are limited, and I can't cure him, so I was hoping Adrian might have a way to help Edward."
Donna looked at Evelyn's anxious expression, feeling a mix of emotions.
She still disliked Edward, but she couldn't deny that he had done something significant this time.
Evelyn said, "Aunt Donna, what's wrong? Are you unwilling?"
Evelyn sighed in frustration and felt guilty, "I was being presumptuous. I forgot that you almost cut ties with the Mays family to be with my dad. It's my fault for asking too much."
Donna said, "It's not that. Indeed, I don't have much contact with the Mays family, but over the years, I've maintained a good relationship with Adrian, and he has always respected me. However, Adrian has a bit of an eccentric personality, and even I can't fully understand his thoughts.
"I'll do my best to persuade him to come, but if he refuses, there's not much I can do."
Evelyn replied, "If he refuses, I have other ways."
Evelyn gritted her teeth and squinted her beautiful eyes, "If worse comes to worst, I'll call Ulysses. He has plenty of ways to bring him over, even if it means crossing the ocean."
