Chapter 159 I Deserve It

Even though Evelyn had left the hospital, she still worried about Byron.

She planned to call Donna once she got home. The Mays family had been top-notch doctors in Mugden for generations, and she hoped they could help Byron.

On the way back, Simon was scrolling through Twitter, reading out funny comments that insulted Nicole to make Evelyn laugh.

Simon laughed so hard at the harsh critiques that tears came to his eyes.

Evelyn pursed her lips and looked out the window, thinking about the golden tie pin Edward wore tonight, feeling a wave of disgust.

She'd rather destroy the gifts she gave him than let them be connected to Edward.

"Evelyn, Karen and Virgil are detained by Peter at the police station."

Landon gently rubbed the back of Evelyn's neck, offering silent comfort. "Peter just messaged that Virgil confessed everything right away. But Karen isn't talking. No matter how Peter questions her, she insists she hired the killer on her own."

"Karen is ruthless, but she still loves her daughter," Evelyn said, her voice cold. "With Bray sick and Dick in jail, Nicole is her only hope. It's normal for Karen to protect her."

Evelyn had William follow Karen to Mythorica. Karen, with her guilty conscience, didn't realize she was being followed. William easily tracked her to the orphanage where she hid the illegitimate child. According to William, the place was like a refugee camp for kids. Seeing those dirty, pitiful orphans broke William's heart. He wished he could grind Karen and Nicole's bones to dust. How could a mother be so heartless?

Karen took the girl from the orphanage and hired a poor, ignorant local woman to try to kill her because she couldn't do it herself.

But William rescued the girl and brought her back to Mugden on Evelyn's private jet. The child was now safe at the police station.

"That girl is Karen's granddaughter, Nicole's daughter, and Karen still tried to kill her," Landon said, frowning. "It's not about family love; it's about making cruel choices to ensure Nicole's wealthy life."

Evelyn nodded, "Exactly."

"Evelyn, don't worry. Peter and I will make sure Karen goes to jail. As for Virgil," Simon cracked his knuckles with a wicked smile, "he thinks it's over because he's in jail? No, his nightmare is just starting!"

Tonight's birthday party had thrown the Wellington family into chaos.

Edward had been at the hospital with Byron, while Patrick and Tiffany were likely overwhelmed by Karen and Nicole's mess.

"Edward, there are a lot of negative comments about you online. Should we have PR handle it?" Bart asked, worried.

Edward sat wearily in the hallway, his face pale and exhausted, his eyes dull. He had one leg bent and the other stretched out, leaning against the cold wall. Even in despair, he looked stunning.

"Aren't they right to criticize me? I think they are. Let them criticize," Edward said, closing his eyes and loosening his tie, still feeling suffocated. "I deserve it."

"Edward, don't say that," Bart said, his voice thick with emotion. "You were deceived by Nicole too. You're also a victim."

'A victim,' Edward thought, feeling a sharp pain in his heart. 'The real victim here is Evelyn. I am just a tool in Nicole's hands. The harm I suffered is from Nicole, but the harm Evelyn suffered is from me.'

"Mr. Wellington!" May came running down the hallway with bags in hand.

"May," Edward quickly stood up to help her with the bags. "What brings you here?"

"Bart told me Mr. Byron Wellington was hospitalized and you'd be staying here tonight, so I bring you some toiletries and clothes. I also prepared some snacks for you and Bart," May said, pulling Edward back to his seat and arranging the food containers.

"May, I'm not hungry. Let Bart eat," Edward said, looking at the steaming food but feeling no appetite.

"I'm not hungry either! Thank you, May!" Bart quickly shook his head. 'If Edward doesn't eat, how could I?' he thought.

"Eat! Both of you, eat up!" May insisted, shoving a piece of cake into Edward's mouth. "You're in this mess because of Nicole, and now you won't even eat? Don't make me look down on you!"

Edward couldn't help but smile bitterly, chewing reluctantly. "Who told you it was because of her?"

"Then why are you so gloomy? Is it because of Mrs. Wellington?" May asked, her eyes wise and knowing.

Edward's cheeks flushed slightly, either from choking or embarrassment. "It's because of Byron."

"May," Edward said, his throat tightening but his voice cold. "I misjudged people. For Nicole, I hurt Evelyn. That was my fault. But even without Nicole, I would have divorced Evelyn. Our marriage was arranged by Byron, and there was no emotional foundation. We would have parted ways eventually. I have nothing to regret."

"Three years, a whole three years! Mrs. Wellington loved you with all her heart. Even a stone would warm up, and a wolf could be tamed. Do you really have no feelings for her? Not even a little?" May asked, her mouth dry.

"I don't love Evelyn," Edward said, his heart trembling, his lips dry. "Since I don't love her, why should I waste her time?"

Bart felt a deep sense of loss and sadness hearing this.

Bart thought, 'I believe Mr. Wellington does have feelings for Evelyn. But his childhood shadows, his mother's suicide, the indifference of his relatives, and the betrayal by his benefactor makes it hard for Edward to trust, to face his own heart, and to open up.'

"Mr. Wellington, admitting mistakes and apologizing aren't shameful. How is dignity more important than a lifetime of happiness? If it means you can be happy, I'd do my best to help you win Mrs. Wellington back!" May sighed deeply.

Edward frowned slightly. "May."

"I would too!" Bart quickly raised his hand.

"By the way!" May took a voice recorder out of her pocket and handed it to Edward. "A handsome young man came tonight and gave me this to pass on to you."

Edward took it. "Who is he?"

"The young man said his last name was Flynn."

Edward's breath caught, and he exchanged a glance with Bart before pressing the play button.
