Chapter 334 There Was No Place for Him in Her Heart

KnightSpear Group across the street.

Gilbert leaned against the sports car door, hands in his suit pockets, standing in the golden sunset, gazing deeply at the entrance of KnightSpear Group.

He had been waiting these days.

He was waiting for Evelyn to contact him, even if it was just a message, it would be enough.

But in the end, his hopes were dashed, which also confirmed one thing.

In Evelyn's heart, there was no place for him.

But he was absolutely certain that Evelyn still had a place for Edward in her heart. It was just that the shadow of the divorce stood between them, and she was unwilling to admit she still had feelings for Edward.

With this thought, Gilbert's eyes darkened as he adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his entire being exuding a chilling coldness.

"Gilbert."

Hearing Evelyn's call, Gilbert's gloom lifted, and his smile became warm and gentle.

"Evelyn, you finally came."

Evelyn walked briskly to him, hands behind her back, tilting her head to look at him, "Finally? Have you been waiting long? I just got here."

Her every move was like a bright and cheerful girl, just like the one who saved him from darkness fifteen years ago.

Whenever he saw Evelyn, he couldn't tear his burning gaze away from her beautiful face, even though he wasn't a man who lusted after beauty.

"I've been waiting for a long time. Ever since we parted at the birthday party, I've been looking forward to seeing you again." Gilbert's smile couldn't hide his bitterness, and with his slightly pale face, there was an inexplicable sense of fragility that evoked pity.

Evelyn was taken aback.

She remembered that she had left in a hurry at that time and didn't properly say goodbye to him and Angela.

It was indeed rude.

Evelyn apologized, "I'm sorry, you know what happened that day, it was a mess. I was worried about my family's safety, so I left in a hurry."

"Evelyn, you really should apologize to me." Gilbert suddenly became serious.

Evelyn was stunned.

Gilbert replied, "Why didn't you ask me for help when such a big thing happened?"

Gilbert took a step closer, his lowered voice hoarse with a hint of reproach, "Evelyn, don't you trust me? Do you think I can't help you?"

Evelyn explained, "Gilbert, that's not what I meant."

"I just hate that I was a step too late that day. I wasn't as fast as Edward, otherwise, I could have been the first to protect you." Gilbert's breathing became heavy.

Evelyn said, "No, that iron rod swing was pretty bad, almost split his head in two."

Evelyn waved her hands repeatedly and felt a bit stifled just looking into his eyes, "Edward took the hit, you don't need to get involved in this mess."

"Why can he do it, but I can't? Do you think only Edward can protect you?" Gilbert's eyes reddened, his voice tense.

Evelyn's body leaned back slightly, a bit startled by his reaction, "That's not what I meant. I don't want you to get hurt either. Why would you want to get hurt? Even for me, it's not worth it."

A long-lost warmth surged in Gilbert's heart, and he looked at her tenderly, "Evelyn, do you care about me?"

Evelyn's heart pounded violently.

Do you care about me?

After their divorce, Edward often asked such brainless questions, and every time she would retort sharply, leaving him wounded.

But deep down, in a very deep place, there was still a dense pain.

However, when Gilbert asked this question, she felt very calm. It wasn't wrong, but it highlighted that Edward was indeed more important in her heart.

Evelyn continued, "I think if it were you, I might not have been able to save you. Then you wouldn't be a hero saving the beauty, but just causing me trouble."

Evelyn casually found an excuse, "Edward's physical condition is better than most, and his chances of surviving surgery were much higher. If it were you, I might not have been able to save you, and then I'd feel guilty for the rest of my life."

Gilbert's lips tightened, and his heart sank.

"By the way, welcome to Hameen. How about I treat you to dinner tonight?" Evelyn invited with a smile, not wanting him to have come for nothing.

"Evelyn, come back to Mugden with me. We'll have dinner in Mugden."

Gilbert's eyes suddenly became clear and bright, "Also, I want to take you to a place I think you'll really like."

Evelyn thought for a moment and nodded lightly.

It wasn't that she particularly wanted to go to that place, but she was busy returning to Mugden to meet Peter and investigate who framed Joyce, so she had to go back anyway.

Evelyn insisted on treating Gilbert to dinner, and Gilbert didn't refuse.

The meal was pleasant enough, but Evelyn had things on her mind, and her brows were slightly furrowed with worry.

"Is Joyce's matter still unresolved?" Gilbert asked with concern.

"That thug is still in the detention center, and he's confessed to everything." Evelyn's voice was low, gripping the cup unwillingly.

"Do you have any leads?"

Gilbert suddenly asked, causing Evelyn's heart to skip a beat. "Are you asking because you have some ideas?"

Gilbert gave a slight smile, his long fingers swiping across his phone screen, quickly tapping a few times.

Evelyn was puzzled and picked up the phone and opened the images. To her surprise, they were the thug's information!

Gilbert explained, "This man, over twenty years ago, was a stagehand who later became a stunt double. A few years into it, he had an accident during filming and broke his left leg."

"Although he received treatment, it only allowed him to live a normal life; he couldn't do stunts anymore. He's been living in poverty ever since," Gilbert said nonchalantly.

Evelyn suddenly recalled that the thug did walk strangely when the police were escorting him to the car that day.

Gilbert continued, "Back then, Joyce and Mr. Wellington's stepmother, Tiffany, were both leading actresses at TS station. There were often rumors of their open and secret battles."

"On Joyce's birthday, Tiffany moved her own birthday celebration to Sunday to compete with Joyce. But she didn't expect that all the guests she painstakingly invited would go to Joyce's party instead."

Gilbert raised an eyebrow, smiling intriguingly, "Do you think she might have harbored resentment and acted against Joyce?"

Evelyn pursed her lips and took a deep breath. "To be honest, Tiffany was my first suspect when it happened. But I had no evidence."

Gilbert squinted and sent her a few more photos.

Evelyn asked, "What's this?"

"The thug's rented apartment," Gilbert replied calmly.

The photos showed a dark, cramped space, the environment filthy and chaotic.

The apartment's peeling walls were covered with posters and photos of Tiffany from her days as a movie star! The whole place looked like a creepy crime scene from a movie!

"The thug was obsessively infatuated with Tiffany. This gives him a motive. Evelyn, would you consider this indirect evidence?"

Evelyn's beautiful eyes widened in shock. "Did you send someone to his house?"

Gilbert elegantly and leisurely picked up a napkin to wipe his lips. "Just a small effort, no need to thank me, Evelyn."

Evelyn felt a bit moved. "That's trespassing, you know."

Gilbert's handsome face curved into a faint smile.

After dinner, they paid the bill, and Evelyn got up to go to the restroom.

As soon as she left, her phone on the table started vibrating.

Gilbert leaned forward, eyes lowered, and he pressed the phone screen with one finger, pulling it towards him.

Then, his eyes turned cold as he picked up the phone and put it to his ear.

"Evelyn, can you talk now? Evelyn?"

Edward's voice on the other end was so gentle and affectionate.

Gilbert remained silent.

When Edward got no response, his voice became even more hoarse, "Evelyn, where are you now? Can I see you?"

Gilbert smirked and hung up the phone.

But within seconds, Edward called again.

Gilbert sneered, directly adding Edward to the blacklist, then put the phone back in place.

Evelyn said, "Sorry to keep you waiting, let's go."

Just then, Evelyn returned.

Gilbert looked at her with a smile, "Alright."

Evelyn sat in the passenger seat of Gilbert's sports car as they sped eastward.

"Where are we going?" she asked curiously.

Gilbert replied, "We're almost there."

Twenty minutes later, the sports car pulled into a newly built horse ranch.

"A horse ranch?" Evelyn rolled down the window, her eyes sparkling.

"Remember when we were kids, and my family still lived in Hameen? You used to sneak me into your family's horse ranch to play and even let me feed the horses with you." Gilbert turned to look at her, his smile as warm as the spring sun.

"Of course, I remember! You were so scared, you didn't even dare to touch the horses," Evelyn said, her tone cheerful as she reminisced about their childhood.

Gilbert smiled bitterly, a bit helpless.

In truth, he wasn't scared; he just had a fear of dirt.

Gilbert continued, "This horse ranch belongs to the Alexander family. It was just completed this fall and hasn't officially opened to the public yet."

After parking the car, Gilbert led Evelyn towards the ranch.

"Please stop!"

Unexpectedly, as soon as they reached the entrance, two security guards stopped them. "This place is not open to the public yet. No visitors allowed!"

Evelyn was taken aback, looking at the expressionless Gilbert with a complicated gaze.

As a son of the Alexander family, Calvin and Randy were well-known throughout the group, but he was turned away by two security guards.

This stark difference in treatment made even Evelyn, an outsider, feel indignant.

"Evelyn, I'm sorry."

Gilbert frowned slightly, smiling bitterly. "You rarely come out with me, and I didn't expect to make you feel wronged."
