Chapter 368 Moved On
"Lily, why don't you and Edward come home with me? Stay at Half Moon Bay tonight."
"Byron gently stroked Evelyn's hair, worried she might resist, and quickly added, "My house is big, with many rooms. You can stay in the room next to mine.
"Tomorrow, I'll have Edward cook for you, and tonight, he can prepare your bath water! Anyway, Tyler is taking a break for the next couple of days, so Edward can handle all the chores!"
Edward's thin lips pressed together, and his brow twitched.
'Bath water? That's doable. But cooking? Byron must think his life is too boring,' Edward thought.
"Grandpa, I..." Evelyn hesitated, her eyes flickering.
Just as she was about to politely decline, Gilbert suddenly stepped forward at a leisurely pace, a gentle and refined smile that elders particularly liked playing on his lips, "Mr. Wellington, I'm afraid Evelyn can't accompany you tonight."
"What?" Byron frowned.
Gilbert sighed deeply, looking at Evelyn's slightly haggard face with tenderness and concern, "Evelyn just performed a major surgery on Randy today, standing for nearly ten hours. She was completely exhausted when she came out of the operating room and almost fainted."
"What?" Byron was shocked, leaning forward abruptly.
Edward was also stunned, his heart wrenching.
Incomprehensible, unbelievable, a mix of emotions made his gaze complex.
She just performed a major surgery? No wonder she looked so tired and unwell, like she was sick.
Edward's jawline tightened, and his thin lips slowly parted slightly.
He wanted to say something, but the words stuck dryly in his throat, unable to come out.
What was he being awkward about? What was he hesitating about?
"So, I'm taking Evelyn home now. My house is right behind Evelyn's villa, so it's on the way."
Gilbert's arm hovered over Evelyn's shoulder without touching her, displaying gentlemanly manners in front of the Wellington family, "Mr. Byron Wellington, I know you care for Evelyn and are concerned about her. But Evelyn has already divorced Mr. Edward Wellington. Having her stay at your house, under the same roof as Mr. Edward Wellington, is really inappropriate, even from an outsider's perspective.
"If you truly care for Evelyn, you should consider her feelings more."
His words were calm and composed, but they ignited a fire in Byron's heart, and even Edward's cold, dark eyes filled with anger.
Which junior dared to speak to him like this? Who dared to be so arrogant?
Edward's brows furrowed deeply, and just as he was about to retort with a cold face, Evelyn's beautiful eyes calmly said, "Gilbert, Grandpa is my family. Everything he does is for my sake. You shouldn't say such things in the future."
"Mr. Wellington! What a coincidence to see you here!"
Everyone turned to see Elbert, accompanied by his secretary, walking briskly towards them.
Evelyn couldn't help but show a hint of surprise in her eyes.
Elbert, the head of a conglomerate, had just been crying his heart out over his beloved Randy's disability, but now he could appear calm and composed in front of others.
It's understandable, given that the Wellington family and the Alexander family have been rivals for years. Elbert couldn't show any weakness in front of his business adversaries.
"Elbert, I heard Randy's health is in trouble. Is everything okay?" Byron asked with concern.
"Randy was in a car accident, and initially, the situation didn't look good." Elbert then looked gratefully at Evelyn, "But Evelyn has already performed surgery on Randy!
"Some people don't know how to cherish Evelyn, and I can't do anything about their lack of judgment. But to the Alexander family, Evelyn is a lucky star! I treat Evelyn as my own daughter!"
The underlying message in his words was clear to everyone present.
Elbert had already found out that Evelyn was divorced, and her ex-husband was Edward.
At that time, he had angrily declared: Edward is not worthy of Evelyn!
"Uncle Elbert, are you thirsty? Let me take you for some tea." Evelyn, feeling embarrassed by his words, tried to change the subject.
She knew Elbert and Charlie were close, but he didn't have to say that to Byron.
"Evelyn, but I'm not thirsty! I haven't finished praising you yet!" Elbert, however, didn't take the hint.
Evelyn fell silent.
Jessica's face darkened with hatred, gritting her teeth.
Why did all the big shots in Mugden revolve around Evelyn? Were all the other women dead?
Edward's eyes were cold as he looked at Evelyn, the colder his gaze, the more it hurt inside.
"A daughter, huh? It seems you really like girls. One daughter isn't enough; you want other's daughter." Byron seized on Elbert's words, "I'm different. I just want a granddaughter-in-law. And I only want Evelyn as my granddaughter-in-law. No one else will do."
Evelyn was shocked.
Gilbert smiled, but his hand behind Evelyn's back clenched into a fist in frustration.
Jessica's mind buzzed, a huge sense of shame and humiliation tearing at her heart.
She felt she shouldn't have come; she should have stayed home, waiting for Maurice and Sophia to find a way for her to marry into the Wellington family!
Every time she took action herself, it only led to more humiliation!
Elbert's smile froze for a moment, and just as he was about to speak, Edward coldly said, "Grandpa, Ms. Taylor and I have been divorced for over six months. Ms. Taylor has someone else in her heart now. Forcing this is really too much."
The hallway fell silent.
Evelyn's heart suddenly clenched into a ball.
But just for a moment, she relaxed and smiled slightly.
Actually, there was nothing to regret. This wasn't the first time Edward had given up on her.
So, men's promises of eternal love were all lies. Which man could pursue and love a woman for a lifetime?
Even Charlie, with his sense of justice, couldn't.
Forget it, Charlie's love life was a joke anyway.
"Edward! What nonsense are you talking about!" Byron glared at Edward, gritting his teeth and squeezing out each word.
If it weren't for all the people present, he would have hit him!
"Mr. Edward Wellington's words suggest he's already moved on. Since both parties have moved on, it's the best outcome for both Mr. Edward Wellington and Evelyn. Don't you agree, Mr. Byron Wellington?" Gilbert asked with a light smile.
