Chapter 460 One Good News, One Bad News
Seeing that Evelyn was ignoring him, Edward suddenly realized that his earlier words had been too inappropriate.
Evelyn had never had a good day, whether in the past or now, while being with him.
At this moment, despite his uncontrollable feelings, he, a deeply flawed man, hadn't even given Evelyn a grand proposal. How could he dare to fantasize about their life after marriage?
"Oops...!"
"Oh my God, my soup!"
The soup in the pot was boiling over, and Evelyn hurriedly tried to clean up the mess.
Edward saw the boiling pot, the steaming steamer, and the beautifully plated desserts. His nose tingled, and his eyes welled up. A tear quietly slipped from the corner of his eye, which he quickly wiped away.
He couldn't bear to see Evelyn working so hard. Without even changing his clothes, he rolled up his sleeves and started tidying up the kitchen and setting the table.
He had felt the urge to cry earlier, his emotions a mix of pity for her and shame for his own behavior.
During those missing three years, he could have lived such a happy life every day, but he had never cherished it.
But fortunately, he had regained what he had lost. From now on, he would hold on tightly to this hard-won happiness.
"The weather's been hot lately, so I made some desserts. Try one."
Evelyn picked up a piece of cake and brought it to Edward's lips.
He leaned in, his lips just about to touch the cake when she playfully pulled back, holding the dessert between her lips and blinking at him teasingly.
Edward's eyes reddened with desire. His large hand trembled as he cupped the back of her neck, his lips capturing the other half of the dessert.
He swallowed the sweet treat first, then sealed her lips, swallowing her rapid breaths and soft moans.
After a long, tender kiss, Evelyn was left weak all over, her silk nightgown clinging to her slender waist, revealing her sensual figure in front of him.
Edward's gaze was gradually consumed by desire.
"Is it sweet?" Evelyn's left hand rested on his shoulder, her right hand's fingertips brushing his crumb-covered lips.
"Sweet. But not as sweet as you." Edward's eyes were filled with passion as he took her fingertip into his mouth.
"You're getting naughtier."
The electric sensation from her fingertip made Evelyn's shoulder twitch, her voice coquettish, "Alright, let's eat before it gets cold."
Edward reluctantly let her go, sitting down properly and picking up his knife and fork. Just then, Evelyn's phone rang.
Seeing it was Peter calling, she tensed up and quickly put it on speaker, "Peter, what's going on?"
"Evelyn, I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?" Peter's tone was complicated.
Evelyn and Edward exchanged a knowing glance. "Start with the good news."
"We can finally convict Tiffany. We have solid evidence of her drug use and possession. According to our state's laws, first-time drug users are sent to rehab, but the amount of drugs Tiffany had is enough for a three-year sentence."
Three years felt too light, but it didn't matter; this was just the beginning. The real drama was yet to come.
"And the bad news?" Edward asked, his voice low and serious.
"The reason we can convict Tiffany is because Percy turned himself in."
Both of them were stunned. Evelyn's heart tightened. "Percy turned himself in?"
"Yeah. He handed over all the evidence he had on Tiffany to me. Each piece is enough to cause a major upheaval in the Wellington Group. No matter what Gordon tries, he won't be able to get Tiffany off the hook!"
This was undoubtedly good news, but Evelyn couldn't feel happy about it.
Edward saw her distress and pulled her into his arms, his voice gentle. "I know you probably can't eat right now. Let's go to the police station first. I'll reheat the food for you when we get back."
Evelyn leaned against his chest, frowning and nodding.
Percy sat calmly in the interrogation room, separated from Tiffany by a wall.
His composed demeanor was a stark contrast to the crazed woman next door, who seemed like a mental patient.
"Officers, this is everything I need to confess about myself and Tiffany's crimes."
Peter stared deeply at Percy. "Percy, you should know that your crimes are more severe than Tiffany's. You're looking at serious charges for inciting drug use and trafficking."
"Peter, I understand what you're saying." Percy's expression was indifferent.
"Why?" Peter, bound by his duty as a police officer, could only ask this.
Percy knew what he was asking.
If he chose to remain silent, even if Tiffany implicated him, the police wouldn't have enough evidence to do anything. But he chose to turn himself in.
"Besides your parents, Peter, there's probably someone else you care deeply about. You'd do anything for her, make any sacrifice."
Peter's eyes narrowed, Evelyn's face flashing in his mind.
"You have your answer. Coincidentally, mine is the same." Percy smiled faintly, a pure and clear smile.
Like a boy meeting his crush for the first time, showing genuine admiration and joy.
Peter was taken aback, sighing. "I understand."
"No, you don't. No one can truly understand this pure yet complex emotion." Percy's smile grew proud.
Soon, Evelyn and Edward arrived at the police station.
But to their surprise, Percy refused to see them.
Evelyn knew he was determined to sacrifice himself.
The more she thought about it, the more upset she felt, the stronger her guilt.
Edward kept his arm around her shoulder, comforting her softly. "Evelyn, don't worry. I'll hire the most renowned international lawyer to defend Percy, someone as good as Gordon. We'll do our best to reduce his sentence."
"When he gets out, he won't have to worry about making a living. Even if he can't be a doctor anymore, I'll find him another job. He won't be left out in the cold."
These comforting words were like a drop in the bucket.
But with Edward by her side, Evelyn's turbulent emotions found some solace.
"Evelyn, among the evidence Percy gave me, there's one piece he insisted must be presented in court. But I'm hesitant. Even without it, we can still convict Tiffany. But this piece of evidence could make Patrick completely abandon Tiffany."
Peter brought over a laptop from the police station and played a video from a surveillance camera right in front of them.
Although the video had no sound, the visuals were shocking!
Edward gasped in surprise. Even though they were all adults, he still felt the urge to cover Evelyn's eyes.
In the video, Percy and Tiffany were having sex, with Tiffany sitting on top of the man, eyes closed, completely naked!
Peter's expression remained unchanged; as a seasoned detective, he had seen records that often defied his understanding.
Evelyn was even more composed, her face expressionless as she mocked, "She's kept her figure quite well."
"Percy's sacrifice... It's truly immense," Peter sighed regretfully.
Closing the laptop, Evelyn spoke decisively, "This video should be treated as if it never existed. It must never be exposed."
Both men understood that she was protecting Percy's last shred of dignity.
Percy willingly became her pawn in this game, never considering himself a person. As long as Evelyn needed him, as long as he could help her, he was willing to sacrifice everything.
"If I resort to any means for revenge, even trampling on others' dignity, I would despise myself. I cannot become a slave to hatred," Evelyn said, her voice tight with pain.
The two men stood behind her, looking at her slender yet resolute figure, shrouded in a layer of sadness, unsure of what to say.
Peter escorted them out of the office.
They hadn't walked far when they ran into Gordon, whose face was incredibly grim.
Edward gripped Evelyn's hand tightly, his gaze at Gordon sharp as a blade.
Gordon's breath hitched!
But he steadied himself, smirking mockingly, "Ms. Taylor, you truly have connections everywhere."
"You're too kind." Evelyn's beautiful face was cold and stunning, her red lips curling into a bold smile. "But it's a pity that after all your efforts for Tiffany, you ended up with nothing."
"Not only that, I heard that Gordon has never lost a case in over ten years? Even at Mugden's law firm, there's a plaque at the entrance boasting a '100% win rate'?"
Edward raised an eyebrow mockingly, "I think you can take that plaque down tomorrow morning. Save yourself the embarrassment when Tiffany's case goes to trial and someone comes to smash your sign."
Peter chuckled behind them.
Gordon gritted his teeth in hatred!
Tiffany's case wasn't huge, just drug use. But if he lost, it would greatly damage his reputation and standing in the industry, as well as Patrick's impression of him.
He had never lost before; he couldn't stand the feeling of losing.
So Gordon, full of resentment, gritted his teeth and sneered, "Ms. Taylor, I underestimated you. I thought your family background was strong, and your methods would be tough. But I didn't expect you could make so many men willing to betray themselves for you."
Evelyn remained calm. If she couldn't handle such insults with composure, how could she manage a billion-dollar conglomerate in the future?
But the two men beside her were far from calm.
Especially Edward, his clenched fist trembling, his handsome face cold as frost, his chest filled with anger rising to his throat!
Gordon saw Edward visibly angered, feeling safe in the police station, he became even more arrogant, "Mr. Wellington, you're very lucky. If you ever have opponents you can't handle or projects you can't negotiate, just let Ms. Taylor step in. Ms. Taylor just needs to sit there, and which old boss wouldn't be captivated? Everything you want will come to you..."
"Ah!"
Gordon's arrogance lasted only five seconds before his vision became blurred.
Instantly, his nose was in pain, numb, and sore, his eyes seeing stars, and he fell heavily to the ground!
"Edward?"
Evelyn stared wide-eyed in shock, her gaze fixed on the strong, tall figure in front of her, radiating a chilling aura.
Even Peter was stunned; he hadn't even seen Edward's move, and Gordon was already down.
No way! He had to review the surveillance footage later to study and learn! It was too fast!
"Edward... this is the police station! How could you... How could you hit someone?"
Gordon clutched his nearly broken nose, tears and blood streaming down, "I'm going to sue you for assault! I'm going to... I'm going to..."
"Did I hit a person? I hit a dog."
Edward flexed his fingers, the joints cracking, his cold gaze fixed on Gordon, "No, calling you a dog is an insult to dogs. In my eyes, you're just a scumbag."
Gordon shivered, anger and fear intertwining!
But he wasn't a nobody; he was a famous lawyer, the heir to the Flynn family. When had he ever suffered such humiliation?
So he deliberately shouted, attracting more police officers' attention, "The Wellington Group's CEO is abusing his power... randomly mistreating innocent citizens, assaulting people, and insulting them! And in the police station! Edward... don't think you can do whatever you want just because you're a tycoon! Hitting someone here is contempt for the law! Disrespect for the judicial system!"
"Gordon, listen to me." Edward's voice was icy cold, "If you have issues, come at me, I'll play along. But if you dare say a single word about Evelyn, even if I go to jail, I'll make you pay in blood. Next time, I'll rip out your greedy tongue and flush it down the toilet. Don't believe me? Try it."
Gordon's eyes widened, his tongue starting to stiffen!
Evelyn stepped forward, gently holding Edward's hand, blowing softly on his reddened knuckles, her eyes filled with concern, "How hard did you hit him? Your hand is swollen."
"No big deal." Edward smiled down at her, unconcerned.
Evelyn gazed deeply at him, her eyes sparkling, then coldly glanced at Gordon, "If you go to jail, I'll go up and punch him a few times too. I'll be so bored outside alone. I need to go in and keep you company."
Peter's mouth hung open. 'Wow, they can flirt even now?'
Gordon forgot his pain, completely dumbfounded!
What did they take him for? A toy?
At that moment, a series of hurried footsteps approached.
"Edward! What are you doing?"
Edward's eyes snapped up, his handsome face turning icy cold.
