Chapter 287 In This Life, I Belong to You!
Evelyn's lips parted slightly, her heart pounding like crazy, leaving her totally stunned.
She thought all those battlefield hardships and near-death experiences were just her memories.
She never expected Edward to remember her too and keep searching all this time.
With his skills, any other woman would've been found in no time.
But the "Elaine" he was desperately looking for was actually Lily, his ex-wife, who was also Evelyn from the Taylor family.
After they split in Liberland, Evelyn wiped out all traces of herself. Plus, to avoid Charlie dragging her back to Hameen, she used a fake name and identity while working as a doctor without borders.
How could Edward find her, even with all his resources?
"Evelyn, why aren't you saying anything? Was I too harsh just now?" Edward panicked at her silence and softened his tone, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be harsh. I was just eager to express my feelings. Elaine is my savior, and I have no inappropriate thoughts about her!"
As Evelyn heard this, her beautiful eyes darkened, and she coldly curled her lips, "Yeah, back then, you were all about Nicole, fighting with Grandpa Byron to be with her, and even getting all depressed over her. How could you have room for another woman? Even if Elaine saved your life, you wouldn't have seen her as a woman."
Edward couldn't take it anymore. He suddenly sat up from the bed, startling Evelyn into a low cry.
Their eyes locked, and his gaze was intense.
Evelyn's breath hitched, causing the cotton in her hand to fall. Edward grabbed her hand tightly, squeezing her slender fingers until they turned red with discomfort.
"Edward! What are you doing? It hurts!" Evelyn questioned.
"Evelyn, I know I messed up big time in the past. I regret it deeply and have been trying to make up for it. I know you won't easily forgive or accept me, so I'm ready to chase you forever until my heart stops beating."
Edward's voice was hoarse, his eyes filled with extreme pain and unwavering determination, "You spent thirteen years chasing me; I'll spend the rest of my life chasing you. I mean it! Evelyn, whether you accept it or not, you can't shake me off in this lifetime. I'm yours!"
Evelyn's eyes widened in shock, her chest heaving with her racing heart. "Forever? Edward, this can't be the first time you've made such a promise to a woman. That's why it rolls off your tongue so easily," Evelyn said, trying to keep her heart from racing, her eyes red as she pried his fingers off one by one. "Back then, when you were sweet-talking Nicole, didn't you make similar vows and promises? Didn't you keep saying in front of me that your wife could only be Nicole? You can dump the words you said, the vows you made, the woman you loved so passionately—how can I believe your so-called promises now?"
Evelyn laughed bitterly, her red eyes glistening with tears.
Edward had hurt her too deeply. She felt utterly miserable, trapped in a never-ending nightmare.
Even if he had saved her life and now genuinely liked her, filled with regret and trying to make amends, it didn't matter. Every time she thought of Nicole, every time she remembered the passion with which he had loved her, the pain resurfaced.
Edward looked at Evelyn's merciless eyes, feeling as if his heart was being torn apart.
As she pried his fingers off, it felt like she was breaking them one by one, causing him excruciating pain.
"Once, we were a couple legally and rightfully. You were my husband, but you never belonged to me. Now, do you think I'll be moved by these words? Do you think I care? If you want to chase me for a lifetime, that's your business. Don't tell me anymore," Evelyn felt a bitterness under her tongue, and her voice choked up a bit.
"Okay, I won't say it anymore. I won't say it again," Edward couldn't bear to see her like this. He quickly knelt on one knee in front of her, his Adam's apple trembling as he looked up, his cold eyes filled with humble affection.
Then, he took her hand, planting a deep kiss on the back of it.
Evelyn's pupils contracted, and her ears turned red. For a moment, she forgot to pull her hand away.
"I'm sorry, it's all my fault. Please forgive me this time, okay?" Edward frowned slightly, gazing deeply into her tearful eyes, full of sincere remorse.
Evelyn's ears reddened as she coughed lightly, not saying anything about forgiveness, just lowering her lashes to look at Edward kneeling before her.
"Tell me, what were you doing tonight? How could you just stand there and take a beating?" Evelyn raised her eyebrows, anger surging in her voice, and couldn't help but poke his forehead with her finger. "You're thirty years old; can't you fight back or resist?"
"Did you feel sorry for me?" Edward's eyes narrowed slightly.
"You saved my life, and you're half my patient. As a doctor, it's only natural for me to care about your health."
"So, you did feel sorry for me," Edward's eyes softened, his thin lips curving into a tender smile. "A beating in exchange for your concern, I think I came out ahead."
Evelyn laughed in exasperation.
Meanwhile...
Eric rushed Molly to the nearest hospital as fast as he could.
From the car to the doctor's office, he held Molly tightly. His bloodshot eyes revealed the storm brewing within.
Eric, usually so composed, rarely worried about any woman to this extent.
Ellen followed closely behind her boss, smiling with relief as she watched Eric's tense, statuesque back.
Molly truly was an angel. She had given Eric, the ruthless man, both a heart and emotions.
"Mr. Clark, our top doctors are off duty tonight. If you go to the emergency room, we can find another doctor for you!" The nurse recognized Eric, trembling with fear.
"I'll see the best doctor within ten minutes!" Eric's bloodshot eyes glared, his roar echoing through the hospital lobby. "Go find them now!"
The nurse, pale with fear, ran off to get a doctor.
All the medical staff kept their distance from Eric, and the patients stayed even farther away, afraid they might not make it out alive.
"Molly, does it still hurt?" Eric was frantic, his sweaty palms soaking through Molly's nightgown.
Molly just frowned, silently shedding tears.
Each tear that fell on Eric's heart felt like a dagger, making him clench his teeth in pain.
"Mr. Eric, you might have forgotten that Miss Wellington was slapped, and her hearing is severely affected. She probably isn't ignoring you on purpose," Ellen reminded softly, equally worried.
This reminder only fueled Eric's rage, making him want to kill Debra even more. "If Molly's ears are damaged, I'll gouge out Debra's eyes and stuff them in her ears!"
Seeing Molly's pale face twisted in pain, Eric felt as if an ice pick had pierced his heart. He couldn't help but lower his head, kissing her sweaty forehead.
Eric's outburst had an immediate effect.
Ten minutes later, Eric carried Molly to the ENT department.
The doctor, trembling, conducted a series of tests on Molly, while Eric and Ellen watched anxiously.
"Doctor, what's the situation?" Eric couldn't hold back any longer.
"It's external damage causing a perforated eardrum," the doctor explained. "I see several cases like this every week, mostly from slaps. Some severe cases can lead to lifelong tinnitus or other complications."
Eric's and Ellen's faces turned pale.
When Eric heard "lifelong complications," his heart clenched in fear.
"Doctor, can this be treated and fully healed?" Ellen asked, her voice filled with worry.
"Don't worry, the perforation isn't large, and you brought her in quickly. She should be able to recover," the doctor reassured them.
Eric's brows furrowed, his voice deepening, "Should?"
"I mean, she will definitely recover! With surgery, proper medication, and avoiding overexertion and contact with water during rest, she will recover!" The doctor, terrified by Eric's fierce gaze, dared not be ambiguous.
"It better be," Eric said, standing protectively in front of Molly, encircling her trembling body in his arms, glaring coldly at the doctor. "Or this will be your last patient."
The doctor nodded fearfully.
Eric bent down, gently patting Molly's back, his lips close to her uninjured right ear, comforting her softly, "Don't be afraid, I'm here. I won't let anything happen to you."
Ellen watched this tender and intimate scene, her usually cold and indifferent eyes reddening slightly.
"Eric, I heard I need surgery?" Molly, having adjusted a bit, could vaguely hear.
Scared, she wrapped her thin arms around Eric's strong waist.
Eric's heart melted, his voice gentle, "It's a minor surgery, it won't hurt."
"I don't want it, I don't want surgery, I don't want to stay in the hospital! I don't want it!" Molly shook her head frantically against Eric's abs.
Eric's heart pounded as a flame of desire rose from his core. His fingers tingled while stroking Molly's back, his eyes burning with lust.
"Don't be afraid, it's a minor surgery. I'll stay with you until you recover," Eric promised earnestly.
"I still don't want it! I'd rather go deaf than stay in this place!" Molly cried, her whole body resisting.
Ellen noticed that Molly seemed particularly terrified and repulsed by the hospital, as if she had a deep psychological shadow.
Eric gently asked, "Are you sure, Molly? Do you really want to go deaf? If you do, you won't be able to hear anything I say to you."
Molly bit her lip, hesitating.
Eric knelt on one knee in front of Molly, holding her cool hand tightly, using unprecedented patience to coax her, "For my sake, please have the surgery, okay? Otherwise, Edward will kill me. Molly, have pity on me."
Eric's plea worked.
Molly rubbed her tear-stained eyes, slowly nodding.
