Chapter 269 Edward Confesses to Evelyn
Eric bailed, leaving Edward and Evelyn alone in the hospital room.
Before she walked in, Evelyn overheard Bart saying Edward had coughed up blood again, and it wasn't just a little. That got her all kinds of worried.
If Edward didn't bounce back this time or ended up with some nasty chronic illness, she'd never be able to repay him. She'd be drowning in guilt every single day.
So, she marched over to the bed, looking all serious, grabbed Edward's wrist, and checked his pulse.
"Your health is seriously messed up. You need to take your meds right now; waiting till tomorrow might be too late!" Evelyn snapped, about to let go when Edward quickly grabbed her cool little hand, holding it tight.
Evelyn suddenly panicked, her breathing getting all shaky.
"Your hand's freezing. Is it that cold outside?" Edward gently rubbed the back of her hand with his rough fingertips. Seeing the scars still there, he felt a mix of heartache and guilt, his voice all raspy, "I'm sorry you had to come over so late because of me."
"If you're really sorry, then take your meds like a good boy!" Evelyn tried to keep her emotions in check, gritting her teeth as she pulled her hand away from his warming grip, "Can't you do it yourself? Do I have to spoon-feed you?"
"No." Edward felt a lump in his throat, his Adam's apple bobbing as he said softly, "I just wanted to see you, Evelyn. I didn't know how else to get you to come."
"Now that you've seen me, can you take your meds?" Evelyn didn't feel any better seeing the usually dominant Edward being so humble.
She remembered what Aaron and William had said, and a wave of resistance and irritation bubbled up inside her. She impatiently checked her watch and said, "Hurry up and take them. After you do, I need to get back to Hameen. Aaron doesn't come home often, and I don't have time to waste here with you!"
Edward felt a sharp pain in his heart from her tough attitude, his empty fingers slowly clenching.
The Evelyn who used to be all about him now didn't even have the patience for him.
But in the end, he could only blame himself.
The road to winning her back was long and tough.
But he still hoped to try his best until the day he was dead.
"Evelyn, you can't deny that I ended up like this because of you." With his self-pity act failing, Edward resorted to being shameless to spend more time with her, "I almost lost my life for you. You can't just leave me here and ignore me, can you?"
"What do you want then?" Evelyn's eyes reddened slightly, showing her anger.
"Take care of me until I get discharged." Edward looked at her deeply.
Evelyn was so angry that she laughed.
Indeed, even Edward himself could hardly stand himself.
He had seen how Eric pursued women before. No matter what kind of woman, none could escape a man's passionate pursuit.
Passionate, he didn't know how; persistence, he could give it a try.
"Edward, I'm not your wife now, nor your servant. I have no reason to keep taking care of you." Evelyn's eyes were cold, and she exuded a chilling aura, "And I took care of you in every possible way before, didn't you find it annoying? Now you're begging me to stay, what are you doing?"
"I like you, Evelyn!" Edward didn't know how else to move her, so he could only confess his feelings, staring at her starry eyes with such intensity and sincerity, "I don't care how you feel about me now. Whether it's disgust or hatred, it doesn't matter. I like you, Evelyn. I've fallen for you."
Evelyn's breath caught, and she instinctively took a step back, totally shocked.
Hearing Edward spill his guts like that, only she knew the crazy mix of feelings swirling inside her.
The room was dead quiet, and they could both hear their own pounding heartbeats.
"Edward, if you had told me this three years ago, I would've jumped at the chance. But it's not three years ago anymore. I told you, we're done." Evelyn's eyes were icy cold as she said, "I don't love you anymore."
"I'm sorry. I know it's late, but once I set my mind on something, I don't quit!" Edward's forehead was slick with sweat from anxiety. He wanted to get closer but was scared she'd bolt, so he was all kinds of conflicted, "It doesn't matter if you don't love me. This time, let me be the one to chase you."
He had never said "love" to Nicole, but this time he couldn't help but want to say it to Evelyn!
"Enough! I don't need love from someone I don't love! How many times do I have to say it for you to get it?" Evelyn, trying to shut him up, threw out a countermeasure, "If you dare to say that again, I'll walk out right now!"
Edward's throat tightened, and he obediently shut up.
After a bit, seeing Evelyn's expression soften a little, he tentatively asked, "If I don't mention it, will you stay with me tonight?"
"No way," she said firmly.
"Didn't you say that since I saved you, you'd grant me one request as long as it's not too much?" Edward's eyes sparkled, still not giving up.
"Didn't you forcefully kiss me yesterday?" Evelyn shot back. She remembered yesterday. Right in this hospital room, Edward had taken her lips, held her waist, and given her a hot and lingering deep kiss.
Her cheeks instantly turned red, and her whole body felt like it was on fire.
"You said I kissed you? That doesn't count." Edward's thin lips curved slightly, his voice low and gentle.
Seeing her rare shy expression, he smiled with pleasure.
"Doesn't count?" Evelyn exclaimed, feeling he was truly cunning!
"I did forcefully kiss you, but you fought back." As he spoke, Edward pointed to his scabbed lips, "This is the evidence."
"Serves you right! Dealing with a rogue like you, biting your lips into three pieces wouldn't be too much!" The more Evelyn thought about it, the angrier she got.
"Alright, go ahead." Edward leaned back and seriously invited her.
Evelyn bit her lip.
Seeing Edward like this, Evelyn didn't bother to argue with him and decided to stay with him tonight.
Evelyn had come out in a hurry, without bringing anything, so she had William go back to her villa in Mugden to fetch what she needed.
In the hospital corridor, William returned with a solemn expression, carrying a small suitcase.
"Thanks, William. You can go home and rest tonight. Come pick me up early tomorrow morning."
Evelyn reached for the suitcase, but William, with red eyes, refused to let go, "Evelyn, come home with me."
"William, since Edward made this request and it's not too much, it's only fair that I repay this favor," Evelyn said calmly.
"But you're sharing a room with him! What if he has bad intentions?" William said.
"We've been married for three years. If he really wanted to do something, would he wait until now?" she said.
"But—"
Evelyn waved her hand dismissively, "Don't worry."
