Chapter 150 Losing One's Composure
Nicole rushed back to the hospital, panicked and clueless.
She remembered Evelyn's creepy words, nervously biting her nails as she paced the ward. 'This can't go on! Evelyn's now a Taylor and she's sly. She knows about my past in Mythorica and will dig up more soon! I can't just sit back and wait. I need to act!' she thought.
Nicole shakily dialed Virgil's number.
It rang forever before he answered. "What do you want at this hour?"
"Virgil! Evelyn's investigating me and might find out about us soon!" Nicole's eyes were bloodshot, her voice hoarse. "You need to leave Mugden ASAP!"
"You're not ditching me, right? If I don't get my money, I'm not letting it go," Virgil said.
"If Evelyn finds out, my marriage to Edward is over! Forget five million dollars, you won't get a dime!" Nicole snapped.
"Alright, I'll trust you this time, but no tricks," Virgil agreed.
"I won't cut your money! Let's not contact each other for now to avoid complications!" Nicole hung up, her hand still shaking.
She calmed down and called Karen.
"Karen, get to the hospital now. It's urgent!"
Meanwhile, Evelyn had already hung up Virgil's call.
Virgil had been locked in the basement of the "Little Black Room" for days, heavily guarded, no chance to escape.
But he had gone from being hung upside down to sitting in a chair.
"Not bad, your acting's improving," Evelyn handed the phone to William, smirking.
"No, it's an honor to work for you!" Virgil's face was pale, scared out of his wits.
"In a few days, it's Nicole's birthday," Evelyn said, lounging in a chair. "We need you to put on a show. Get it done, you'll go to prison. Mess up, you die."
"Got it," Virgil nodded frantically, sweating bullets.
Evelyn smirked. "I heard you only eat one piece of bread a day? How do you manage? William, bring the food."
"Yes, Evelyn."
William soon brought a tray to Virgil.
It had four pieces of bread, a roast chicken, and a bottle of beer!
After days of just bread, Virgil was pale with hunger.
His eyes locked on the roast chicken, tears and saliva flowing.
"Eat," William said coldly, placing the tray in front of him.
Virgil swallowed hard, looking at Evelyn with teary eyes. "Is this my last meal?"
Leaving the "Little Black Room," Evelyn stretched tiredly. "Let's go home."
"Evelyn, why feed Virgil?" William asked, his eyes slightly red.
"To bring down Nicole, I need Virgil's help," Evelyn yawned. "He's been suffering here and must hate Nicole, maybe even me. But if I treat him better when he's about to break, he'll be grateful and transfer all his hatred to Nicole. Then, he'll be all in for revenge on her."
William couldn't help but praise her, then sneered, "I can't wait to see this drama unfold!"
A week later.
Evelyn, fresh from inspecting the restaurant, returned to her office, satisfied.
Since she took over the hotel, it had thrived for half a year. They passed the star rating review smoothly and won the "Most Popular Hotel of the Year" award.
But that wasn't enough. She aimed for the "Best Hotel of the Year" title, which the Wellington family hotel had won for five straight years!
Recently, Evelyn had been interviewed by three major domestic media outlets. William was surprised to see her on camera, as she usually kept a low profile.
But Evelyn had her reasons.
She knew that to become the president of KnightSpear Group, just being Charlie's daughter isn't enough. She needed to step into the spotlight and show her achievements. Charlie gave her the hotel to manage as a stepping stone, and she intended to make the most of it!
Evelyn had just won a game and was about to call William to refill her coffee when she remembered she had sent him on an important mission.
A week had passed, and Nicole's birthday party was the day after tomorrow, but William hadn't returned yet.
Evelyn curled her red lips, closed her eyes, and tapped her fingers on the desk.
She trusted her calculations and was patient enough to wait.
Just then, a call came in.
Evelyn saw it was from Betty and quickly answered with a smile.
"Betty, what good news do you have for me this time?"
"Evelyn!" Betty's voice was sweet and crisp. "I made some pastries for you. Do you have time to come over today?"
"Let me guess, the new season's haute couture designs from Rozabela are out, and you want my opinion, right?" Evelyn saw through her scheme immediately.
"Oh, you figured it out, so don't say it out loud!" Betty pouted playfully.
"Betty, your skills are top-notch. You don't need my guidance anymore. You're an idol to countless designers now," Evelyn encouraged her. "Just follow your own ideas. If I interfere, it will take away the essence of your work. Have confidence in yourself, Betty!"
"Thank you. I'll never forget that without you, I wouldn't be where I am today," Betty said humbly, always seeing Evelyn as her eternal inspiration.
"Actually, there's something else I need to tell you, but I'm afraid you'll be angry," Betty paused, gritting her teeth. "Just an hour ago, Nicole came to me again, asking for a dress. She had her eye on that silver off-the-shoulder gown in my studio. She's so shameless!"
"Did you lend it to her?" Evelyn asked calmly.
"Yes, so I'm here to apologize," Betty's voice lowered.
"I know you well. Like me, you never do anything without a purpose," Evelyn said without blame.
"The dress she borrowed, although haute couture, is last year's model. The bust and waist don't fit her at all, but she insists on wearing it!" Betty snorted. "I told her each haute couture dress is a one-of-a-kind piece. She can borrow it, but if she alters it, even with a pin, I'll make her pay five times the price!"
"Wearing such an ill-fitting dress, won't there be problems?" Evelyn asked lazily, her eyes narrowing.
"If there are problems, it's her own fault. It's her reputation on the line, not mine. Don't you agree?"
