Chapter 136 Landon is Angry
When they got back to Evelyn's villa, it was already early morning.
Jennifer was worried about Evelyn, forcing herself to stay awake, her eyes red from exhaustion.
"Jennifer, don't blame yourself. I'm fine. Don't you have classes early tomorrow? Go to sleep." Evelyn hugged her.
"Evelyn, am I really that useless? You protected me as kids, and now I still can't do anything for you." Jennifer pouted, tears welling up again.
"Silly girl, what are you talking about?"
Evelyn gently flicked her forehead. "Because of you and Joyce, the Taylor family is much happier. You're our little sister, our good luck charm. If you want to help me, work hard to achieve your dreams. When you make it big in the entertainment industry, I'll hire you as my spokesperson. Saves me some money too!"
"Evelyn, believe me, I will succeed!" Jennifer wiped her tears and nodded earnestly.
After a quick wash, Jennifer fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.
Evelyn tucked her in and left the room.
In the study, William was waiting for her.
"Tonight, Nicole was hospitalized. Do you know why?" Evelyn's eyes lost their warmth as she sat on the sofa, her gaze cold.
"Yes, Nicole attempted suicide by slitting her wrists but was rescued in time. She's out of danger now." William paused, his eyes flashing coldly. "Edward has been by her side the whole time."
"Of course, Nicole was willing to die for him. Even if he turned into a corpse, he'd have to stay by her bedside." Evelyn sneered, indifferent.
"Evelyn, what do you think about Nicole's situation?"
"Nicole attempting suicide is the funniest joke I've heard this year."
Evelyn leaned back, closing her eyes and massaging her temples. "She hasn't even become the wife of the Wellington Group's president yet, and she hasn't killed me yet. How could she be willing to die? Besides, people who really want to die wouldn't be discovered. It would be frustrating if they failed."
"So, you think Nicole is using this to gain Edward's sympathy?"
William furrowed his brows. "But why take such a risky move? Isn't she about to marry Edward? Could it be that Edward doesn't want to marry her, so she's using this to force him?"
Evelyn felt a surge of irritation. "Who knows. Edward is a cold-hearted man. It's no surprise if he abandons anyone."
"That's true, but I still hope they get married and stay together, so they don't harm anyone else!"
William ground his teeth in frustration. "Evelyn, who do you think sent the man who attacked you tonight? Was it Tiffany? She's still locked up and shouldn't have the time to arrange this."
Evelyn's eyes darkened. "His fighting style looked like underground boxing, no real technique but very lethal moves. Tiffany doesn't have the time, and Debra doesn't have the connections. Only Nicole has the means. She lived in Mythorica for three years, and Simon's investigation showed she had complicated relationships with multiple men. It's possible one of them is a simple-minded but strong guy willing to do her bidding."
William's eyes widened, feeling that Evelyn's analysis was spot on.
"As for why that man attacked me, there's no point in guessing here. We'll find out when we ask him tomorrow."
Evelyn suddenly remembered something and leaned forward. "By the way, you didn't let anything slip to Landon, did you?"
William sighed. "I follow your orders. I didn't tell Landon anything."
"That's good."
But before she finished speaking, her phone rang.
It was Landon. Evelyn's hair stood on end, her pupils constricting.
She quickly turned her phone down, not daring to answer.
But then, William's phone rang, and he couldn't afford not to answer!
"Landon, what's wrong?" He tried to stay calm.
"Put Evelyn on the phone." William didn't put the call on speaker, but Landon's deep voice made Evelyn's eyelids twitch.
"Evelyn is already asleep, Landon, do you mind..."
"William, you're getting bolder, teaming up with her to deceive me?" Landon rarely got angry, but when he did, it was intimidating. "I'll say it one more time, put Evelyn on the phone, or by dawn, you will no longer be Evelyn's secretary!"
Evelyn's heart pounded. She took the phone and said in a sweet, coquettish voice, "Landon."
Landon took a deep breath, as if restraining some overwhelming emotion, and said hoarsely, "Evelyn, come out. I have something to ask you."
With a heart full of anxiety, Evelyn walked out of the villa.
Under the dim streetlights, Landon stood in front of a black Aston Martin, his face stern.
His gray, tailored suit was serious. Under the light, his long legs and perfect lines were captivating.
Landon was so handsome, but at this moment, Evelyn felt a sense of panic when she saw him.
"Landon." She took small, hesitant steps towards him, biting her lip.
"The night is chilly, let's talk in the car."
Without another word, Landon took off his suit jacket and wrapped it around Evelyn, then pushed her into the car.
They sat in the back seat, and Landon finally couldn't hold back. He grabbed her shoulders and urgently asked, "Where did the attacker hurt you?!"
"My arm."
Evelyn didn't dare lie and lowered her eyes, feeling guilty.
Landon's face turned pale. He trembled as he touched her arm and slowly rolled up her sleeve.
The sight of the white bandage made Landon's eyes instantly redden.
"It's okay, Landon. It didn't hurt the bone, and it doesn't hurt anymore." Evelyn hurriedly explained, afraid that Landon would worry.
Landon let her sleeve down and held her hand.
Evelyn's fingers turned red from Landon's grip. She lowered her head in guilt and anxiety, "Landon, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have hidden it from you, but I thought I could handle it myself. I just didn't want you to worry."
After a suffocating silence, Landon, with red-rimmed eyes, said clearly, "The one who hurt you must die."
Evelyn's pupils contracted, and her heart tightened.
The Landon before her, who had left the underworld, seemed to have reverted to the dark king who once ruled the shadows.
"Landon, I know you want to stand up for me, but you promised me." Evelyn hugged him tightly, her cheek rubbing against his chest, "Now that you're back with me, everything should start anew. We can't go back to those old ways. That assassin is just a pawn. Even if we kill him, the mastermind would still be at large! The Taylor family has always been good at seizing opportunities. If the other side handed us such a big handle, wouldn't it be a waste not to use it?"
Landon's murderous intent gradually subsided. He took a deep breath, reached to the front seat, and handed Evelyn a manila envelope. "Open it."
Evelyn blinked and pulled out the documents inside, then froze, "What is this?"
"William already told me about the assassin. He's more eager than you to find the mastermind, so he took a shortcut and asked for my help." Landon's deep eyes suppressed his anger, "But he didn't tell me you were hurt. He's really good at avoiding the main issue!"
"I told him not to say anything. He was in a tough spot. Don't blame him." Despite her resentment, Evelyn had to defend William since he was her secretary.
"If it happens again, I'll send him back to comfortably be the third son of the Flynn family, and no one will stop me." Landon's decisive and ruthless gaze was terrifying.
Evelyn pouted, staying as quiet as a quail.
Evelyn wasn't afraid of Charlie, but when Landon got angry, she immediately turned into a docile rabbit.
Evelyn carefully reviewed Virgil's information.
Suddenly, her eyes widened, and she exclaimed, "It's him?!"
