Chapter 296: Don't Even Think About Entering the Taylor Family's House
The next morning, Evelyn's mind was still foggy and unclear.
She opened her eyes wide and sat up.
The room, decorated in black, white, and gray tones, was filled with a calming and soothing fragrance, making her feel relaxed and comfortable all over.
"Is it Gilbert's room?"
Evelyn felt a sharp headache as if she had been hit hard.
She only remembered arguing with Edward last night, and then her mind went blank.
Evelyn's heart was pounding as she quickly got up and left the room.
Downstairs in the kitchen, Gilbert, dressed in a spotless white shirt with sleeves rolled up to his elbows, was preparing breakfast for Evelyn at the counter.
The warm morning sunlight outside the window cast a soft, hazy glow on Gilbert, making his exceptionally handsome face look like a delicate painting.
He often cooked but never wore an apron. After all, he never wore the same suit twice.
"Gilbert," Evelyn called him.
Hearing Evelyn's cool voice, Gilbert looked up, his eyes filled with tenderness. "Evelyn, you're awake? How are you feeling?"
"Gilbert, what happened to me last night?"
"Last night, you weren't feeling well and fainted at my place. It might have been low blood sugar combined with emotional stress. Don't worry; although you slept in my room, I didn't do anything to you."
"I know," Evelyn wearily rubbed her forehead. She wasn't a naive girl.
She wasn't sure about the low blood sugar, but she did feel very miserable last night. The painful memories still haunted her heart, and even the slightest touch brought unbearable pain.
She just didn't expect such a strong reaction, which directly knocked her out.
"Breakfast is ready, Evelyn. Come and eat," Gilbert gently urged, placing the plates neatly.
"No, I don't have much of an appetite. Thank you for your kindness."
It was already quite inappropriate for Evelyn to stay overnight at Gilbert's place, so she couldn't stay for breakfast.
"Thank you for your hospitality, but I have things to do and need to leave." Saying this, Evelyn awkwardly pressed her lips and walked towards the door.
Gilbert tightened his heart, quickly following her, "Evelyn, did I do something to upset you?"
"No, I don't usually spend the night or eat at a man's house if I don't know him well. It's not my style," Evelyn's tone was indifferent, with a formal smile.
Gilbert felt a sharp pain in his chest, clenching his fingers.
Why could Edward be so close to her, but he couldn't even have her stay for breakfast?
If he hadn't shown up in time last night, what would have happened next? Would they have kissed? Would Edward have stayed at her place overnight?
At that moment, Evelyn's phone rang. It was Landon calling.
"This is Evelyn."
"This is Landon. Simon, Peter, William, and I are all outside Gilbert's villa, Evelyn," Landon's voice rumbled like rolling thunder.
"Landon, I'm fine. You guys are making too big a deal out of this," Evelyn rubbed her aching temples.
"Making a big deal? Evelyn, you spent the night at man's house! You didn't come home! We were all worried sick!" Simon's voice was hoarse from shouting.
"Evelyn, did Gilbert touch you? Were you willing, or did he trick you? I've got handcuffs ready for him!" Peter, the hot-blooded cop, was ready to storm in and arrest Gilbert.
"Calm down! Everyone, calm down!" Evelyn hurriedly put on her high heels and walked out the door.
Outside, several luxury cars surrounded Gilbert's villa.
"Ms. Evelyn!"
William, with red eyes, was the first to rush up, grabbing her shoulders with tears welling up in his eyes. "Are you okay? Did Gilbert do anything to you?"
"Who would dare do anything to me? Aren't they afraid the Taylor family would wipe them out?" Evelyn thought they were being overly nervous.
"Evelyn!"
Landon, Simon, and Peter also gathered around. Seeing Evelyn looking normal and her clothes intact, they all breathed a sigh of relief.
"Landon, Simon. Good morning." At this moment, Gilbert walked up to them with a warm smile, then looked at Peter. "Peter, you're here too. The police station must be busy."
Peter gritted his teeth, wanting to cuff him right then and there!
Simon was also angry, "Don't call me Simon. We're not that close!"
"True, I haven't been back in a long time. Childhood friendships have indeed faded."
Gilbert didn't care about them, looking deeply at Evelyn, "No matter how you see me, my feelings for Evelyn have never changed."
This was the second time Gilbert had hidden Evelyn. Although Gilbert hadn't done anything, this behavior was repeatedly challenging their limits!
"Landon, Simon, let's go back," Evelyn sensed the tension, tugging on Landon and Simon's sleeves, giving them a hard look.
"You guys take Evelyn home first," Landon frowned as he gently squeezed Evelyn's small hand, "Gilbert, let's have a word."
Gilbert smiled warmly, "Sure."
Seeing that she couldn't persuade Landon, Evelyn could only be helped to the car.
As the car was about to leave, she glanced out the window, a tightness in her chest.
On the snowy ground by the roadside, a dried pool of blood stood out, shocking to see!
In the villa's living room, the atmosphere was oppressive.
Landon sat upright on the sofa, his long legs crossed, exuding a cold and stern demeanor.
His gaze at Gilbert was no longer as friendly as before.
"Landon, have some coffee," Gilbert brought over the coffee.
"No need. I don't have much to say, and I'll leave once I'm done."
Landon lowered his eyes, glanced at his watch, and said coldly, "Gilbert, I know Evelyn. She would never casually stay overnight at a man's house. Not once in her life.
But she stayed at your place last night. You need to give me an explanation."
"Not letting Evelyn stay overnight, but supporting her in a hidden marriage? Keeping it from Uncle Charlie for three years, making her suffer for three whole years?" Gilbert still wore a calm smile as he leisurely sat across from him.
Landon's breath hitched, and his lips pressed into a thin line, "Is that the same? Are you trying to change the subject?
Evelyn married Edward because she once loved him deeply. It was her voluntary choice, something she did willingly. I didn't agree, but I respected it.
But Gilbert, you're different."
Gilbert's pupils contracted, and his previously calm face tightened.
"I know very well that Evelyn doesn't have feelings for you. If you keep pushing, not only will Evelyn resent you, but I will also have a problem with you," Landon's eyes flashed with a sharp, intimidating light.
With a faint smile on his face, Gilbert adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. However, the forceful movement of his Adam's apple revealed he was suppressing his anger.
"Last night, I simply invited Evelyn to my house. My mother and I both wanted to see her. We had a pleasant evening dining and chatting.
Later, Edward called Evelyn. I don't know what Edward said, but it made Evelyn very angry, causing her to faint," Gilbert recalled the events of last night, his eyes filled with anger.
Landon listened, frowning slightly.
He felt that Gilbert wasn't lying, but he couldn't fully trust him.
"Even so, you kept Evelyn at your house overnight without informing us. No matter how you explain it, it doesn't make sense. Even if Evelyn doesn't care about what happened last night, I will remember it."
Landon slowly stood up, exuding a chilling aura as he walked towards the entrance, "Gilbert, even though you like Evelyn, and our families are old friends, I can now represent my father and tell you clearly: You and Evelyn can be friends, but neither my father nor I agree with you being lovers. Don't think you can enter the Taylor family."
Just as Landon was about to leave, Gilbert suddenly smiled and said, "Mr. Taylor, one day Evelyn will marry me. When that day comes, you'll all have to come and celebrate our wedding."
"If you and Evelyn get married, it will be a wedding in your daydream," Landon sneered and walked away.
As the door closed, Gilbert's smile gradually froze, turning icy cold, "Do I need your approval to do things? What a joke."
At that moment, his phone rang. It was Curtis calling.
"Mr. Alexander, I have two things to report. First, Jessica from the Clark family is coming back from abroad."
Gilbert's lips curled into a cold smile, "And the second?"
"I couldn't find detailed information about Edward's condition, but I did learn that he was seriously injured last month and was hospitalized at Mugden's hospital. However, he was discharged after just two days."
"I don't need to know the details. It's enought to know he was seriously injured," Gilbert raised an interested eyebrow.
"Mr. Alexander, what do you plan to do next?" Curtis asked cautiously.
"I want him dead," Gilbert's eyes were filled with a sinister light.
