Chapter 490 Family Conflict
Donna, Joyce, and Susan had gone shopping and had afternoon tea before returning to Oasis Villa, fully satisfied.
To outsiders, the three women's positions seemed awkward. People imagined a dramatic scene of scheming and rivalry, but they were as close as best friends. Sometimes, even Evelyn felt deeply jealous of their sisterly bond.
Charlie was truly lucky. To have these three women so devoted to him.
"Wow! You guys went out without me! I'm mad."
Evelyn sat on the swing in the garden, her toes touching the ground as she swayed, her posture lively and youthful.
"Oh, Evelyn, it's not that we didn't want to take you!"
Susan walked over and hugged her neck from behind, coaxing softly, "You came home suddenly without telling us. If we had known you were coming back, unless your dad was paralyzed, had a heart attack, or broke his leg, we would have stayed home waiting for you no matter what!"
Evelyn's lips twitched.
Donna and Joyce looked stiff. "Susan, say less. You're cursing Charlie."
"Oh, come on! If something happened to Charlie, where would I find such a reliable man?" Susan put her hands on her hips, laughing heartily.
The other three women looked embarrassed.
Luckily, Charlie wasn't around.
Otherwise, he might really have a heart attack.
"We just went out for a walk to relax today," Donna gently explained, holding Evelyn's hand.
"It's my fault. I'll make a big dinner tonight to apologize to Evelyn," Joyce, who doted on Evelyn more than her own daughter Jennifer, hurriedly turned to head to the kitchen when she saw Evelyn was unhappy.
"Joyce, no, I was just joking with you guys!"
Evelyn quickly got up and pulled Joyce back, pouting her delicate lips as she hugged her arm. "Look at you, why are you so easy to tease?"
Seeing Joyce's reserved and humble demeanor, she felt a pang of heartache.
Living so cautiously was too exhausting.
"Joyce, how have you been lately? Feeling better?" Evelyn asked gently.
"Evelyn, don't worry about me. I'm fine, really."
Joyce gently stroked Evelyn's hair, full of concern. "But what about you? What have you been up to lately? You haven't been home for so long, your dad is so worried he can't eat, and he's lost weight."
"Exactly! He can't even eat Joyce's cooking, which shows how much he misses you," Susan chimed in.
Evelyn felt a bit guilty inside but didn't show it.
"Evelyn, I heard Charlie calling you loudly on the phone. Did you guys have a fight?" Donna couldn't help but ask.
"Not really."
"Not really? Since that day, Charlie has been gloomy everywhere he goes. Even this morning when he left, your dad didn't look good!" Susan shuddered at the thought.
"Yes, Evelyn, what happened? Your dad rarely gets this angry," Joyce also looked worried.
Evelyn pressed her lips tightly, took a deep breath, and said word by word, "I got back together with Edward."
The world fell silent.
After a while, Donna, Joyce, and Susan nodded in unison, "No wonder. It's a miracle your dad didn't blow up Riverside Villa or beat up Edward."
But before they could ask more, the butler hurriedly reported, "Ms. Taylor, Mr. Taylor is back. He asks you to go to the study."
"Got it."
Evelyn took a deep breath and started to walk, with Donna, Joyce, and Susan expressing their intention to follow, fearing Charlie might cause trouble.
In the study, Charlie sat on the sofa with a stern face, drinking tea.
Usually, when they met, they would joke around, laugh, and banter, creating a lively and warm atmosphere. It was rare for it to be this tense.
"I want to talk to Evelyn alone. Why are you all following?"
Charlie glanced at Donna, Joyce, and Susan with displeasure and heavily placed his cup on the coffee table. "She's an adult with a reputation. Do you think I would spank her like when she was a child?"
"Even if I were to hit someone, I'd break Edward's head first!"
Hearing this, Evelyn's face instantly turned cold.
"Charlie." Donna, worried that Evelyn might get scolded, quickly stood up to speak for her. "In the past, Edward did some foolish things, but he has repented. He has risked his life many times to protect Evelyn, truly cherishing her with his own life."
"Risked his life? What do you mean? Did Evelyn encounter any danger?" Charlie's heart tightened, and he leaned forward abruptly.
"What happened to you, Evelyn?"
"I'm fine. Nothing happened to me. Aunt Donna is exaggerating," Evelyn quickly interrupted.
It wasn't that she didn't want Charlie to know how good Edward was to her or how much he loved her.
She was more afraid that Charlie wouldn't be able to accept it and might get sick from the shock, which would make her feel incredibly guilty.
She had already lost her mother; she couldn't lose her father, too.
Moreover, she knew that among all the children in the family, Charlie loved her the most.
Charlie slowly leaned back against the sofa, his sharp eyes fixed on her. "I don't care how Edward deceives you or what dirty tricks he used!"
"Evelyn, let me make this clear: even if Edward gives you the entire Wellington Group, I will never agree to you being with him!"
"Even if he sacrifices his life, it can't make up for the pain he caused you and the three years of youth you wasted on him!"
Charlie was angry, and his words were somewhat harsh.
But everyone in the Taylor family knew that Evelyn was his life, his everything!
