Chapter 328 Her Substitute
Gilbert's eyes finally showed a glimmer of light.
Gilbert ordered, "Let her in."
"Yes, Mr. Alexander!" Curtis retreated.
A few seconds later, the elegant sound of high heels entered the quiet private room.
"Gilbert."
The voice was soft and seductive, and a graceful, enchanting figure soon appeared before Gilbert.
Gilbert squinted, a smirk playing on his crimson lips as he looked her up and down with an appreciative gaze as if he were admiring a piece of art he had personally sculpted.
Sarah was the manager of the Rose Club. Every step she took towards Gilbert was full of charm, yet it didn't come off as vulgar; instead, it was quite sensuous and alluring.
But what was even more astonishing was her face.
The moment she walked in, Gilbert's heart involuntarily pounded violently.
Long hair, red lips, a confident smile, and the features he had spent years meticulously adjusting—she looked eighty percent like Evelyn!
The remaining twenty percent was her aura, her spirit, something she could never learn or imitate no matter how hard she tried.
"Sarah, come, come to my side." Gilbert's Adam's apple moved slightly as he beckoned her with his finger.
Sarah obediently walked up to him. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms.
"Gilbert."
Sarah's beautiful eyes were full of emotion. Her fingers hooked onto his Windsor knot, slowly pulling it down. Her red lips, full of desire for him, moved slowly towards his cool, thin lips.
Gilbert said coldly, "What did I warn you about? Did you forget?"
Gilbert's eyes suddenly turned cold, and the softness in his tone vanished. "You only look like Evelyn. Don't actually think you are her. Since you're a stand-in, you should know your place. My kisses are only for Evelyn."
"Understood, I'm sorry, Gilbert. I'll be more careful next time." Sarah immediately withdrew her hand as if she was doused with a bucket of cold water.
She was the only one in his subordinates who could call him Gilbert.
Others thought it was because Gilbert favored her, but only she knew that her privilege came merely from her face, which closely resembled Evelyn's.
Sarah bit her lip, her heart aching.
She had been with Gilbert since she was fifteen on Aurora Isle. For as many years as she had been with him, Gilbert had been pining for Evelyn.
She wanted to meet this Evelyn, to see what kind of extraordinary woman she was, to make Gilbert remember her for so long.
Sarah asked, "Gilbert, you seem to be in a bad mood. Is it related to Ms. Taylor?"
Gilbert said coldly, "Evelyn seems to be getting closer to Edward."
Gilbert's expression was cold, filled with a crimson hatred. "Even though they're divorced, I always feel that there's still some inexplicable attraction between them, and I can't seem to intervene."
"Gilbert, why don't you just tell me how I can make you happy? How can I help you?" Sarah gazed intently at Gilbert.
"I've kept you around for so long, and now your face is finally going to be useful." Gilbert's eyes darkened as his long fingers traced the contours of her beautiful face.
At that moment, there was a knock on the door, and Curtis's voice came through, "Mr. Alexander, it's me."
"Come in."
Curtis pushed the door open and entered. Seeing Sarah nestled against Gilbert, even though it wasn't the first time, it still startled him.
Because at first glance, she looked too much like Evelyn.
"What is it?" Gilbert took a bite of the fruit Sarah fed to his lips.
Curtis answered, "Your informant at KnightSpear Hospital has sent a message."
The news of Edward waking up quickly reached the Wellington family.
Byron and Patrick rushed over. Seeing Edward awake, Byron couldn't hold back and sat by the bed, hugging Edward tightly, almost in tears.
Byron said, "Edward! You scared me to death!"
"Grandpa, I'm sorry for worrying you." Edward hugged Byron, feeling guilty.
"How are you? Does your head still hurt? Is there any discomfort?" Byron raised his hand, wanting to touch Edward's head, but then stopped.
He remembered the major surgery Edward had undergone. This head had taken over ten hours to piece back together, more precious than his own old life. He didn't dare touch it!
Edward comforted him, "I'm fine, really."
Edward saw through Byron's thoughts and gently took his dry hand, placing it on his head. "Feel it, it's solid."
Byron only dared to touch it lightly, his mouth unable to close from happiness.
Patrick had also come to see Edward, but they were always so awkward.
When Edward was in a coma, Patrick was so worried he couldn't sleep day or night. Now that Edward was awake, he still wore a stern face, unable to say a kind word.
Byron complained, "You can't scare me like this again! I know you wanted to protect Lily, but you shouldn't put yourself in danger!"
Byron gently patted his cheek, still a bit scared. "It's fine to want to be good to your woman, but you need to be healthy and strong. Otherwise, how can you protect Lily?"
Patrick remained silent.
Edward's face darkened. "Grandpa, can you wish me well?"
Byron continued, "As long as you understand what I mean!"
Byron leaned close to his ear, pretending to be mysterious. He whispered, "I'll tell you a secret. Your wife is amazing!"
Wife?
Edward's ears turned red, and his heart skipped a beat.
Byron said, "Your surgery was performed by Lily herself. She spent over ten hours removing the blood clots from your brain!"
"Evelyn, Evelyn did my surgery?" Edward was completely stunned.
"Surprised? I was too. Lily is actually the legendary 'White God'! What can we do? She's so capable, I now feel you're not good enough for her!" Byron sighed, worried for Edward.
Edward was shocked for a long time, biting his lip. "I'll work hard. I'll work hard to become an excellent person, to shield her from the wind and rain, to give her happiness."
Patrick said, "Just don't cause her trouble, and that would be good enough."
Patrick thought of losing such a capable daughter-in-law and couldn't help but sneer. "I always hoped you two would live well together and not divorce, but you didn't listen and insisted on being with Nicole. Now you're saying all this, but I think it's too late."
Edward frowned, about to retort, but Byron beat him to it, angrily saying, "How can you get more pessimistic with age? Why bring up that woman? Edward, no matter how bad, has realized in time to stay away from that vicious woman. Unlike some people, who are still stubborn, not doing their job well, yet have the nerve to lecture others."
"Dad!"
"Dad!" Patrick's neck turned red with anger, about to argue back when his phone rang.
He took out his phone and, to his delight, saw that it was a call from Caleb!
