Chapter 267 He Wants to Pursue Her, What Are His Intentions?
In a flash, the carriage went dead silent!
Landon, Aaron, and William all had their eyes bugging out. Even William, who was driving, looked like he just saw a ghost and almost lost his grip on the wheel!
"Evelyn, what did you just say?" Landon, usually Mr. Cool and Collected, was totally thrown off.
"Edward said he regrets divorcing me. He wants another shot, and this time he’s gonna chase me." Evelyn lifted her delicate, petite face, her big, clear eyes locking onto Landon. "Landon, what does he mean by that? Is he, like, confessing to me?"
Aaron and William chimed in together, "Of course!"
Then, just as quickly, they both added, "Shameless!"
Landon blinked and furrowed his brows a bit.
"Landon, can you believe it? Edward, who totally wrecked our future, now says he wants to chase me, swearing up and down it’s for real." Evelyn forced a smile, her lips curling up reluctantly.
"I will never help him." Donna’s elegant face turned red with anger when she heard Evelyn wanted her to save Edward.
Donna, who always did what Evelyn asked, flat-out refused this time.
"Aunt Donna, please listen to me," Evelyn said, sounding desperate.
"No way." Donna waved her hand dismissively, "I remember every single thing Edward did to you. Not just me, Joyce and Susan remember too. Isn’t he the president of the Wellington group? Let the Wellington family deal with it!"
"Aunt Donna, Edward’s a pain, but this time, he saved my life." Evelyn pulled Donna to sit on the sofa, speaking earnestly, more like an elder than her.
Donna frowned, "What do you mean?"
Evelyn laid out the whole story about how she got into trouble at Thunder Peak, how Edward saved her, and how he got hurt doing it.
After hearing the story, Donna felt a chill in her hand held by Evelyn, filled with fear!
"Evelyn! If you were my daughter, I’d have grounded you and given you a good scolding! You’re too reckless!" Donna said, helpless.
"This is only known to Landon, Aaron, and William. Charlie doesn’t know." Evelyn put her finger to her lips, lowering her voice, "Please keep it a secret for me. I’m afraid Charlie will blow a gasket if he finds out."
"I really don’t want to keep secrets for you anymore. In these three years of your drama with Edward, we’ve covered up so much for you that we could write a novel!" Donna angrily poked her forehead lightly with her fingertip, "I should tell Charlie about this and let him set you straight!"
"It won’t help even if you tell him. If Charlie could control me, he would’ve done it long ago." Evelyn grinned mischievously, looking proud.
After another round of earnest persuasion, Donna, unable to resist Evelyn’s persistence, finally agreed.
"Evelyn, tell me the truth. Are you catching feelings for him again because of this?" Donna asked worriedly.
"No." Evelyn answered firmly, "I just don’t like the feeling of owing someone."
For some reason, she felt a slight panic in her heart, but it quickly subsided.
"That’s good. If you want to get back with him, you might lose us." Donna gave her a cold look, "Do you want us or him? Your choice."
Evelyn rubbed her arms, feeling scared.
"Evelyn! Donna!" At this moment, Susan knocked on the door and walked in boldly, "Joyce’s birthday party dress has arrived. Come and help me pick it out! I don’t get women’s clothes. After all, I wore jeans to my wedding."
"Alright, alright! We’re coming right away!"
Evelyn, afraid that Donna would ask more questions, quickly pulled her to find Joyce.
They hurried to Joyce’s room.
They saw a row of mobile racks filled with luxurious evening gowns, each one a limited edition from fashion weeks, dazzling to their eyes!
There were also rows of custom-made high heels on the floor, with some pairs even adorned with sparkling diamonds on the tips.
Any other woman would have been thrilled.
But Joyce, wearing a simple and plain light purple sweater, sat on the sofa looking distressed.
"Joyce, what’s wrong? Your birthday is coming up, why aren’t you happy?" Evelyn sat next to Joyce and hugged her dominantly.
"Evelyn, please talk to Charlie and cancel the birthday party." Joyce sighed helplessly, "I’ve been telling him for two weeks now. I said it’s fine to just gather at home. I don’t like the food outside, and I don’t want to entertain so many guests. It’s exhausting and too extravagant. But Charlie won’t listen. What should I do?"
"Joyce, you showing off or what?" Susan teased from the side.
"If we didn't know you better, we'd think you were full of it," Donna said, hugging Susan's slender waist and teasing.
Evelyn's eyelashes fluttered lightly, feeling a bit uncomfortable inside.
When she was young, to take care of her feelings, Joyce was always like an invisible person at home. Only during meals could Evelyn see her busy figure in the dining room.
Back then, Evelyn was too young to remember much, but she knew Joyce was Victoria's rival. So, even as a kid, she sided with Victoria and gave Joyce a hard time, causing chaos at home and even saying some pretty harsh stuff to her.
Evelyn always felt these women lacked self-respect. How could they shamelessly cling to Charlie, knowing he had a family and more than one woman around him?
It wasn't until later, as she grew older, that she learned the full story from Landon and Simon.
Back then, when Victoria was sick, it was Joyce who unhesitatingly donated her bone marrow to her.
That was twenty years ago, and medical tech wasn't as advanced as it is now. Donating bone marrow wasn't without risks, and Joyce was left with aftereffects, suffering from occasional unbearable pain.
Although Victoria eventually passed away, it was undeniable that Joyce's help extended Victoria's life by a year, giving Evelyn an extra year of happy childhood memories with Victoria.
Later, when Evelyn lost her child with Edward, it was Joyce who stayed by her side and cared for her like a mother.
Gradually, Evelyn no longer resented her.
People aren't plants; how could they be without feelings?
'Who would resent Joyce who has been genuinely good to me for twenty years? Even Victoria never hated her, so why should I hold a grudge?' Evelyn thought.
"Joyce, let's go with Charlie's plan." Evelyn, like a biological daughter, held Joyce's arm and smiled gently, "It's not just Charlie's idea; it's also mine. In the past twenty years, you've never had a proper birthday. I've always felt guilty about that."
"What are you talking about?" Joyce widened her eyes in surprise, saying, "I just don't like celebrating birthdays. It has nothing to do with you!"
"Then please fulfill my small wish and accept our request to throw you a birthday party, okay?" Evelyn said.
"Joyce! Look, even Evelyn said this! Don't be conflicted anymore!" Donna and Susan also gently persuaded her.
In the end, Joyce couldn't resist their urging and went to pick out a dress.
"None of these are good. These dresses won't do." Evelyn crossed her arms, critically eyeing the expensive gowns, "Charlie's taste is so bad. It doesn't match my aesthetic at all."
"They're already very good, Evelyn. They're enough," Joyce responded quickly.
"Not enough, far from enough." Evelyn's beautiful eyes sparkled with pride, "If you're going to wear something, it should be a custom-made dress by a top designer, unique and unparalleled. Joyce, have you heard of Sharon?"
"Sharon?" Donna and Joyce were both surprised.
Only Susan looked puzzled but felt the name sounded familiar.
"I'd like to invite her to design your birthday dress. What do you think?" Evelyn's bright smile spread to the corners of her eyes.
"Evelyn, are you serious? Sharon? The international top fashion designer, Sharon?" Donna looked at her in disbelief.
"Is there a second Sharon in the world?" Evelyn asked calmly.
"Charlie had thought about having Sharon design a dress for Joyce before, but he couldn't get in touch with her despite trying many ways, so he gave up. Evelyn, can you really invite Sharon?" Donna said.
Evelyn's lips curled up, and she secretly laughed.
Charlie would never have guessed that Sharon was right beside him, and that Sharon was Evelyn!
"Of course, Sharon and I are very close. If I want her here, I only need to ask." Evelyn's eyes were mysterious as she hugged Joyce closely, "Joyce, I want you to wear jewelry designed by Alexa and a dress designed by Sharon, stunning everyone at the party. Let them once again witness your unparalleled elegance."
"Evelyn." Joyce was overwhelmed with emotions, her eyes gradually reddening.
"Don't worry. On that day, Joyce will be the woman every other woman in the world envies!" Evelyn said proudly.
