Chapter 34 The Useless Ex-Husband
Evelyn stared at him intently as if she were suffocating.
Looking into Edward's once-alluring eyes felt like being burned by two flames.
Even someone as strong as Edward felt the desire to avoid her sharpness.
After a while, Evelyn smiled, distancing herself as if they had never known each other.
"So, Mr. Wellington, you came to me to vent your frustrations about your fiancée. You must be bursting at the seams after holding it in for so long."
She thought, ‘Edward, you really are heartless. I don't expect you to remember my good qualities, but you shouldn't repeatedly use such insulting language to degrade my character. Besides, I don't belong to you anymore. No, I should say, you never made me belong to you. I was like a stray cat waiting outside your world for you to bring me home. I yearned for you with all my heart, only to be abandoned. Just because I liked you, should I endure your heartlessness? That's too unfair!’
"Unfortunately, no matter how strong you are, you can't help them get through this disaster. Dick has infringed upon the interests of KnightSpear Group, engaged in bribery and corruption, fabricated evidence, and falsely accused others. The evidence for these crimes is solid, so it's futile for you to try to help him," Evelyn said sharply, her smile bewitching yet chaotic.
She thought, ‘But I won't let you control me. I will fight for what I want, and I won't look back on what I don't want. I don't care how others see me, even if it's you. I want the Adams Group to be destroyed. I want the Adams siblings to pay for their actions. I will use any means necessary, and no one can stop me.’
Edward's strong arm tightened under his suit, with the veins on the back of his hand bulging.
He thought, ‘Now that Lily has a backer, she is so dominant and sharp-tongued. I know what she's saying is wrong, but I can't give her the right answer.’
‘I was angry not because she used the Taylor brothers to punish the Adams family but because I saw her smiling brightly at Simon, and it made me feel uneasy and scared.’
"You shameless person," Edward said, his breathing suddenly becoming heavier.
"Am I just shameless? Thank you for not finding more malicious words to describe me," Evelyn replied, trying to smile as if she didn't care. This only hurt him even more. "But even if I am shameless, what does it have to do with you? What right do you have to judge me?"
There was no need to continue the conversation, so she turned around to leave.
Unexpectedly, Edward unwillingly grabbed her arm, which happened to be her left arm that had only recently recovered. His grip was incredibly tight.
"Let go of me," Evelyn winced in pain but was afraid to struggle and aggravate her old injury.
"Lily, you know very well who I am to you," Edward said in a hoarse voice, his gaze probing.
He was like a gambler, holding onto the hope of winning, racking his brains to uncover her secrets.
Evelyn, consumed by anger, smirked. "What else are you to me, besides a useless ex-husband?"
"Lily!" Edward's eyes instantly turned red.
"Edward, let go."
Suddenly, a tall figure flashed in front of Evelyn, forcefully pushing Edward away and shielding her.
"William, I'm fine. Mr. Wellington was chatting with me," Evelyn reassured William, showing no fear.
"Why did he hold onto you when you were just chatting? He was holding onto your injured arm. You were in pain before going to bed the day before yesterday, all because of him," William stared at Edward, sounding the alarm.
Unable to control his actions, Edward clenched his fingers, which had just touched her.
Evelyn looked at William, his face red with anger, and felt that she did not need to mention this in front of Edward, as if she were pleading for sympathy.
"You're Landon's secretary?" Edward recognized William in an instant, growing even more upset.
"Yes, but now I am Ms..." Evelyn tugged at him forcefully, signaling him to stop talking.
William, quick-witted, noticed and immediately shut his mouth.
"Landon has entrusted you with his most trusted secretary. He's treating you so well," Edward said sarcastically, putting away his complicated emotions and becoming as cold as iron. "Congratulations on marrying into another wealthy family. Before, you deceived me to no end, and now it's Landon's turn. I hope he never sees through your true colors."
His every word pierced Evelyn's heart like a knife.
William suddenly sensed that Evelyn was not breathing steadily in his arms and that her shoulder was trembling.
But Edward's words puzzled him even more, making him wonder, 'What’s wrong with this person? Why is he speaking nonsense?'
"William, let me introduce myself again," Evelyn took a deep breath and smiled through the pain, "This is the CEO of the Wellington Group, my ex-husband whom I was married to for three years."
"What..." William's face turned pale.
He thought, ‘Ms. Taylor disappeared for three years, and she actually got married to Edward.’
‘She hid it from the world, from the Taylor family, and became Edward's wife.’
‘What is she up to?’
"But we have already divorced, I voluntarily withdrew, and I have no further connection with the Wellington family. If we meet again, we will be strangers."
"We have not formally divorced. Grandfather's birthday..."
"Enough! Stop using Grandfather as an excuse."
Evelyn suddenly got angry, her eyes turned crimson, "You only humiliate me like this because you think that I care about Grandfather, don't you? You're only doing this because Grandfather said we should maintain our marriage until his birthday."
Edward's body trembled as if she had bitten him hard with sharp teeth, causing him pain.
Lily had never seen her so angry before. In his memory, she was not a person with a temper. His words always felt like punching cotton, never getting the emotional response they should.
But this time, her eyes and eyebrows were filled with anger and hatred, a hundred times stronger than they had been the last time she had been at the hospital.
"Our relationship is nothing more than a collapsing building. You ended our relationship yourself; you cheated first while we were married; did I blame you for anything?”
“But why do you think you can neglect me and make me obedient to you? Do you want me to remain unmarried for the rest of my life? How can you be so selfish?"
He thought, 'Am I selfish?'
Edward felt a needling pain in his chest.
He didn't know that his behavior was gradually becoming abnormal, and he didn't understand why he was so persistent toward his divorced wife.
"Moreover, I have never broken my promise. I was going to keep our divorce a secret until Grandfather's birthday. It was you who favored Nicole and let her expose everything in advance."
Evelyn forced a bitter smile and extinguished her last hope in Edward, "You blame me, and I can understand that.
Because you can only blame me and not Nicole, right?"
Edward stood petrified in the wind.
He watched William support his ex-wife as they walked away, his cheeks burning as if they had been slapped countless times.
"I don't want it anymore, and I won't turn back."
Edward clenched his empty hand.
He thought, 'I was the one who let go of her first. Why do I feel like the one being abandoned?' Bitterness filled him, and his heart felt as if it had been pierced.
