Chapter 198 Ex-Husband
Vincent led Evelyn and Ada to the backstage lounge, where they chatted over champagne.
After a bit, Ada's agent came to get her for an important interview.
With Ada gone, it was just Evelyn and Vincent left.
"It's been three years. How have you been, Alexa?" Vincent asked gently, his eyes showing pure, elder-like affection.
"As you can see, same old, same old," Evelyn replied with a casual smile.
"You've changed a lot, seem more melancholic. Where have you been these past three years? Traveling for inspiration?" Vincent noticed the sadness in her eyes and asked with concern.
"I wasn't traveling. My heart's lost its passion," Evelyn sighed, her eyes distant.
Vincent clinked glasses with her, smiling. "When do you plan to reveal you're Alexa? It's a shame to keep such a dazzling identity hidden."
"We'll see. For now, I have more important things to handle. Revealing my identity might cause unnecessary trouble," Evelyn said, her eyes cunning.
"If I reveal it, it has to be meaningful and shocking at the right time."
"That's so like Alexa, always maximizing benefits. You never make a losing deal," Vincent smiled. "We've been friends for years. If you run into any trouble, let me know."
"This isn't Yatuok. Your influence might not reach here," Evelyn replied nonchalantly, catching his deeper meaning.
"Miss Clark wanted to join AX. The review department considered her, but after today, she's not qualified. Mrs. Clark and Miss Helen from the Alexander family wanted me at their charity events. I was undecided, but now I don't need to consider it," Vincent said with a smile.
"Whatever makes you happy, I don't mind," Evelyn shrugged elegantly.
When Evelyn said she didn't mind, it was a hint to go ahead. Anyone scheming against her wouldn't have a good outcome.
The show was about to start, so Vincent took Evelyn out of the lounge.
They hadn't gone far when a cold, magnetic voice called out.
"Evelyn."
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat, and she frowned, turning around.
Edward, with a stern face, walked towards her.
Vincent saw Edward's unfriendly gaze and softly asked Evelyn, "Ms. Taylor, is this your friend?"
"Friend? Is he worthy?" Evelyn curled her lips coldly, puzzled inside.
Edward was noble and aloof, unlike Eric; he rarely attended such events.
'Why is he here today? Probably because of his foolish, clingy sister, Jessica.' Evelyn thought.
Edward walked up, staring intently at Evelyn.
"Ms. Taylor, aren't you going to introduce this man to me?"
"Is it necessary, Edward? The Wellington Group has no jewelry business. You won't have much interaction with Mr. Garcia," Evelyn coldly refused.
Edward pressed his lips together but extended his hand to Vincent.
"Mr. Garcia, hello."
"Edward, hello. I didn't expect you to know Ms. Taylor. It surprises me," Vincent calmly shook his hand.
"It seems Mr. Garcia and Ms. Taylor aren't very familiar," Edward noted.
Edward's eyes narrowed, a hint of coldness showing. "If you were familiar, you'd know my relationship with Ms. Taylor."
Vincent frowned, feeling Edward's grip tighten, as if they were competing.
Edward thought, 'What's wrong with me? I'm not usually this childish or anxious. But seeing Evelyn close to another man makes my heart ache!'
He felt strange, like a resentful woman who'd been abandoned. Usually disciplined, he couldn't control himself around Evelyn.
Evelyn, feeling anger rise, sneered, "Indeed, we have a non-contact relationship."
"Evelyn," Edward's voice was hoarse.
"Since when did ex-husbands become something to brag about?"
'Ex-husband?' Vincent was shocked. 'Alexa was married? As her friend for years, I never knew. Why did she marry Edward? She could have done better.'
"Edward, you can make things difficult for me. Seeing you already makes me unhappy, so I don't mind more. But Mr. Garcia is a very important friend, and I don't want you troubling him," Evelyn said, her brows furrowed. "If you, as an ex-husband, still have any dignity."
Edward's jaw tightened, his heart feeling pierced. His fingers dug into his palm.
Evelyn would defend anyone, speak up for anyone, but stand against him. He, once deeply loved by her, seemed only fit to be forgotten.
"The show is about to start. Edward, shouldn't you go accompany your sister? She'll be worried if she can't find you," Evelyn said, preparing to leave with Vincent.
In a panic, Edward grabbed her arm tightly.
"Since you're divorced, you have no relationship. Please show some respect!" Vincent was about to intervene but stopped when Evelyn raised her hand.
"Vincent, they're waiting for you to speak up front. Go ahead, I'm fine here."
"But," Vincent hesitated.
"Don't worry, we're divorced. What can he do to me?"
Edward felt like his heart was being ripped out, the pain making his pupils contract. He tightened his grip on her.
Vincent knew this was a personal issue between them, not something an outsider should interfere with. Plus, no one would dare cause trouble at his event, so he left.
The hallway was quiet. Edward could hear his own heavy heartbeat, holding his breath forcefully, but it was useless.
"Let go," Evelyn struggled, her eyes cold.
"I understand who you mean by sister, it's Jessica, right?"
Edward, anxious, pulled her closer. Her soft body pressed against his strong waist, their breaths mingling.
"I didn't mention a name. How do you know I was talking about Miss Clark?"
Evelyn's mocking gaze stung his eyes. "It seems you have her in your heart. Otherwise, why would you be so sensitive? When I mention a sister, you think of Miss Clark instead of Debra or Molly?"
Evelyn thought, 'Edward, I'm deliberately using Jessica to irritate you.'
Edward smiled bitterly. Instead of anger, he was curious about his status in her eyes.
So, he asked hoarsely, "Evelyn, are you jealous?"
Evelyn laughed, shaking her head. "Edward, are you out of your mind? How dare you ask me that? When I was your wife, you were entangled with Nicole, went to Mythorica with her for Christmas, and even created unique jewelry for her. You were so cruel to me, and I never got jealous. Now that we're divorced, you have the nerve to ask if I'm jealous? Are you determined to be shameless to the end?"
