Chapter 286 Reminding Him of Elaine
Eric held onto Molly as they climbed into the car, with Ellen still behind the wheel. The luxury car pulled away from Riverside Villa.
Inside, Eric kept Molly close, gently running his fingers through her cool, silky hair. His heart ached with a mix of pain and bitterness.
He had come tonight to find Edward for a drink, but instead, he stumbled upon this chaotic scene.
Eric couldn't shake Molly's heartbreaking experiences told by Kimberly or the horrifying scars on her arms from his mind. His anger made his eyes bloodshot, and it felt like icy blades were slicing through his veins, spreading a sharp, intense pain throughout his body.
This pain was unlike anything he'd ever felt.
Sure, he'd been hurt by Evelyn before, and that had stung. But this heartache was on a whole different level.
He took a deep breath, resting his chiseled jaw on Molly's head, and slowly closed his eyes, which were red with anger.
'Molly, I promised I'd protect you. I won't break that promise. I'll do whatever it takes,' he thought.
"Mr. Clark, where are we headed next?" Ellen asked softly, glancing at Eric's beautiful eyes in the rearview mirror.
Eric snapped out of his thoughts, momentarily unsure.
He had just told Debra he was taking Molly away, but he couldn't really take her to his own place.
If Edward found out, he'd be in serious trouble.
"Molly, I'll take you to find Edward. Or maybe you can stay at Evelyn's place tonight, okay?" Eric asked gently, his long lashes lowered.
Molly furrowed her brows in pain, covering her left ear with her hand, and didn't answer.
"Molly? Molly?" Eric called her several more times, but she still didn't respond, only kept saying, "It hurts, it hurts."
"Where does it hurt?"
Molly slowly raised her eyes, her cheeks still marked by Debra's slap.
As their eyes met, her tear-filled, doe-like eyes sparkled with a pitiful light that tugged at his heart.
"Eric, I'm sorry. I know you're talking to me, but I'm sorry, I can't hear you," Molly apologized.
"Can't hear? How can you not hear?" Eric asked urgently.
Molly slowly opened her hand, which had been covering her left ear, in front of Eric.
In the center of her pale palm, a spot of blood had bloomed.
Eric gasped, his heart clenching in pain, his thoughts in disarray.
"Ellen, to the hospital, quickly!" he ordered urgently.
Half Moon Bay.
In the bedroom, Byron, Tyler, the private doctor Joe Green, and Evelyn were all gathered.
Bart had already finished work but rushed over in his pajamas and slippers when he heard something had happened to Edward. Standing among these well-dressed folks, he looked pretty out of place.
The five of them stood around Edward in a circle, silent.
Evelyn was the first to lose her patience. She frowned slightly and directly ordered Edward in front of Byron, "What are you staring at? Don't you know how badly you're hurt? Hurry up and take off your clothes!"
"In front of all of you?" Edward asked tentatively, looking hesitant.
"What's the matter? You're a grown man. Do you have something on your body that other men don't? Or do other men have something you don't?" Evelyn's beautiful eyes filled with impatience as she saw him being so bashful.
Bart shivered on the side.
Edward raised his pale yet handsome face, his eyes full of deep emotion as he gazed at Evelyn, smiling bitterly, "That's not what I meant. I just think that for a simple medication application, there's no need for so many people. Having you by my side is enough."
Evelyn's beautiful eyes widened slightly, and she clenched her fingers in anger.
"Edward is right. We can't do much by just standing here. Let's leave Joe and Lily here. Lily knows medicine too and can assist Joe. The rest of us should leave," Byron said, starting to create an opportunity for Edward.
"You're right, Lily knows medicine. She's been taking care of me these past few times." Edward looked deeply at Evelyn, his smile growing, "So, Joe, you can leave the medicine and go off duty. I only need Lily."
Everyone looked at Evelyn, their eyes filled with knowing smiles.
Evelyn was so angry that she wanted to slap him!
In the end, Byron and the others left, leaving Evelyn and Edward alone.
The room was eerily quiet.
"Take off your shirt," Evelyn ordered coldly, her breath heavy.
"Okay." Edward obediently took off his suit without hesitation.
As he was about to take off his tattered shirt, the movement pulled at the wounds on his back, causing him to wince in pain.
In reality, this pain was nothing for a battle-hardened soldier like him, but he did it on purpose because he knew that if he couldn't regain Evelyn's love right now, getting a bit of her sympathy would be good enough.
"Stop moving, I'll help you!" In her urgency, Evelyn pressed down on his hand.
Edward's heart skipped a beat, and he suddenly placed his other large hand over hers. The warmth from his palm seeped into her skin, spreading through her blood, and flowing gently into her heart like a soft wave.
"Alright, I'll listen to you," he said.
Evelyn was momentarily stunned, pursing her red lips as she withdrew her small hand from under his. "We have nothing to do with each other, why listen to me? Lie down."
Edward obediently turned over and lay on the bed.
Evelyn saw that his shirt was stained red with blood, and some of the ghastly wounds had already scabbed over, sticking to the fabric.
Seeing this made her heart ache, her eyes turning even redder than the blood he had shed.
"What's wrong? Are my wounds scaring you?" Edward asked worriedly when he noticed her hesitation.
"It's nothing. Don't move." Evelyn took a deep breath, picked up the scissors from the bedside, and carefully cut away the fabric stuck to Edward's wounds, bit by bit.
Suddenly, Edward's eyes deepened, a hint of red rising in his gaze.
At this moment, Evelyn gave him a strangely familiar feeling again, making his heart skip a beat.
She took out disinfectant and the ointment Joe had left from the medical kit, skillfully cleaning his wounds.
"Evelyn," he called her softly.
Evelyn's beautiful face remained stern, and her hand applying the ointment became heavier as a warning.
Edward felt more pain, furrowing his brows tightly. "Evelyn, you remind me of someone from the past."
Evelyn continued to treat his wounds, asking casually, "Who?"
"I don't know."
"Don't know? How is that possible?"
"Yeah. But I really don't know." Edward lay on his side, his distant, hazy eyes looking out at the moon outside the window, a resolute yet stubborn figure appearing in his mind. "Back then, when I was in the peacekeeping forces, I met her on the battlefield."
Evelyn's hand holding the medical cotton trembled violently, her heart racing so fast that her face turned pale!
The room was so quiet that she felt her heartbeat was incredibly loud. If this continued, she feared her abnormal reaction would give her away.
Fortunately, Edward was facing away from her and couldn't see her current expression full of flaws. "That time, our team got this impossible mission: rescue hostages trapped by the Liberland terrorist organization, get them to a safe house, and then to the Valoria embassy. Honestly, our team had less than a hundred people, and we were supposed to take down a well-armed terrorist group. It was basically a suicide mission. At that time, I had no desires, no attachments, and never thought about coming back alive."
Edward laughed bitterly, a hint of self-deprecation in his voice. "If it weren't for meeting Elaine, and if it weren't for her pulling me back to the camp with all her might and encouraging me to hold on, I don't think I would be alive now."
"Elaine?" Evelyn's voice trembled slightly.
"I don't know the name of the girl who saved me. She was wearing a white coat and a mask that covered most of her face, only revealing a pair of beautiful, bright eyes. She was a medical staff, so I just gave her a code name," he explained.
'Elaine. I kind of like this code name,' she thought.
"Later, when I woke up from my coma, she had already left the camp. I didn't even get a chance to ask her name, which is really a pity," Edward sighed helplessly. "Since I returned to Mugden, I have never stopped looking for Elaine. But despite using all my connections and means, Elaine seemed to have vanished from the earth, with no trace at all."
Evelyn pressed her trembling heart, her beautiful eyes wide open, her palms full of hot sweat.
'So, he has never forgotten me; he remembers me,' she thought.
"So when you were treating my wounds just now, I vaguely felt that you were very similar to Elaine, making me think of her," Edward said.
"You really have a lot of women on your mind over the years," Evelyn suppressed her panic, teasing him, "You probably hadn't broken up with Nicole when you were in the army, right?"
Edward pursed his thin lips in frustration.
"That's right, you couldn't be with Nicole while you were in the army. The lonely military life couldn't relieve your inner suffering, so you had to find a woman to vent your longing. It's just that you couldn't find Elaine. If you had found her, you might have had a military romance back then," Evelyn laughed coldly.
"Evelyn, please don't mock my savior," Edward's brows furrowed slightly, and he suddenly became very serious. "Although Elaine and I only met once, she is irreplaceable in my heart. I swear, I only have gratitude and respect for her, no romantic feelings. You can hit me, scold me, trample on my dignity, and I won't blame you. But I hope you can respect Elaine."
