Chapter 93 To Deal With
'Debra! How can you treat Molly like that? Do you even have a heart?!' Evelyn thought.
"May, I get it. But I'm not Edward's wife anymore. I'm just an outsider now, and there's not much I can do," Evelyn said, feeling both angry and helpless.
"I know, but who else can I turn to?" May said, almost in tears.
"Don't be sad, May."
Seeing May so upset made Evelyn feel bad too, so she gently comforted her, "I understand. Please take care of Molly. If I can help, I will."
"Thank you, Mrs. Wellington!" May said, reluctantly hanging up.
Evelyn looked at the darkened screen with a deep sigh.
"Is that May from the Wellington family you told me about?" Landon asked softly, sipping his coffee.
"Yeah, she took care of Edward since he was a kid. She's simple and kind-hearted, and she treated me well when I was with the Wellingtons."
Evelyn always repaid kindness and held grudges against those who wronged her.
"For May to call you, she must be going through something tough."
"It's about Molly."
Thinking of Molly's innocent face, Evelyn's heart ached, "Molly has autism and is very introverted. Even though she's a Wellington, she doesn't get much attention from her parents and lives very cautiously.
When I was with the Wellingtons, I could protect her a bit. Debra held back because of me. But now that I'm gone, Debra's gotten worse!"
"That girl sounds pitiful, but this is still a Wellington family matter."
Landon sighed, his eyes filled with concern for Evelyn, "You've divorced Edward. It's best to stay out of his family's affairs."
"I know my limits. By the way, Landon, why are you here instead of at the company? Did you miss me?" Evelyn walked around to Landon's back, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Of course I missed you, but I got this this morning and thought we should talk about it."
Landon smiled and took out an invitation from his pocket, handing it to her.
"What's this?" Evelyn asked, puzzled.
"Byron's birthday party invitation," Landon said with a meaningful tone.
"Looks like they've dragged you into this."
Evelyn sneered, seeing through the plot, "The Wellington and Taylor families are business rivals. We haven't had contact for years, so why did Patrick send you an invitation for Byron's birthday now?
This isn't Patrick's idea. This must be Tiffany's doing."
Landon touched his jaw, "Evelyn, they don't have good intentions. Byron's birthday party is probably not that simple."
"Let them come. I'm not afraid of Tiffany, just like I wasn't afraid of Edward."
Evelyn sat beside Landon, her lips curling into a cold smile, "Everyone has their tricks. If she wants to play games, I'll play along.
Landon, I'll tear up this invitation for you. Just pretend you never saw it."
"No, I've decided to go," Landon said firmly.
"What?!"
"Evelyn, we don't shy away from trouble. Facing challenges head-on is the spirit of the Taylor family."
Landon's gentle eyes were filled with compassion as he placed his hand on the back of her neck, gently stroking, "I didn't know about the hardships you faced before and couldn't protect you. Now that you're back with us, I won't let you suffer anymore."
"Landon." Evelyn's eyes welled up with tears, her heart moved.
Landon sighed, holding Evelyn in his arms, "At the birthday party, there might be unexpected situations. If you're alone, you might be bullied by the Wellingtons. I don't want you to face that again."
Evelyn rubbed her eyes, feeling warmth in her heart.
'I've always had love in my life. I just got too caught up in making Edward love me, which led to this mess. If you want to tame someone, you have to risk shedding tears. I've cried enough for Edward; it's time to move on.'
Time flew by, and it was Byron's birthday party.
The Wellington family went all out for Byron's birthday. Patrick spent over a hundred million dollars on a mansion as a gift and held the party there to set the mood.
Today, the guests were all high society—wealthy tycoons, financial magnates, and Byron's old friends from the art and calligraphy world, all renowned artists.
Nicole and Debra had been prepping for a week, almost like it was their own wedding, trying to be the most dazzling women at the event.
But they didn't expect the mansion's decoration made their dresses look out of place, and they couldn't find a good spot for photos!
"Debra, what did you get Byron?" Nicole asked curiously.
"I got him an antique vase. He loves antique porcelain, so he'll definitely love it!" Debra said, showing off her new pink diamond ring.
Nicole blinked her carefully made-up eyes, "Edward bought a pair of silver cups at a charity auction for forty million dollars! He said he'd give them to Byron, so doesn't that make your gift look less impressive?"
Feeling slighted, Debra glared, "Edward is the CEO, so his gifts have to be better. It's about the Wellington family's reputation."
"That's true, my husband is amazing," Nicole said proudly.
"Besides, I'm Byron's favorite granddaughter. He'll love whatever I give him," Debra said coldly. "Nicole, enough about me. What did you get Byron?"
"My gift is a treasure, bought for over ten million dollars at an auction. You'll see soon enough," Nicole said mysteriously.
'Ten million dollars?! Nicole can still come up with that much money? Didn't Tiffany say her family was almost bankrupt? It seems she's already living the high life, spending the Wellington family's money even before marrying in.'
The more Debra thought about it, the more annoyed she became. She decided to stir things up, smirking, "Nicole, I'm really worried for you today. Isn't Lily coming? Byron liked her so much before, he would definitely invite her. What will you do then? It would be so awkward to meet her."
"Why should I be awkward? I'm Edward's fiancée! She's the one who should be embarrassed!" Nicole's eyes reddened with anxiety.
"But Lily still hasn't finalized her divorce with Edward. Although getting a marriage license is just a matter of time, today her status seems to be above yours."
Debra secretly laughed, delighted at Nicole's flustered state, "If Byron introduces her as his granddaughter-in-law, what will you do then?"
Nicole's face turned pale with resentment.
"Don't worry, Nicole."
Debra flinched, her shoulders tensing as she turned to see Tiffany walking over with a glass of red wine.
"Tiffany!" Nicole quickly linked arms with Tiffany, leaning intimately on her shoulder.
Debra never minded before, but today it made her furious! 'That's my mom, not yours! Acting like you're mother and daughter, have you no shame?!'
Tiffany patted Nicole's arm, her eyes cold, "Nicole, don't be afraid. Even though Karen isn't here today, I'm here to back you up. That Lily won't be able to stir up any trouble!"
