Chapter 179 You Have Never Been Honest with Me

When Edward got to the restaurant, Evelyn and Peter were already gone.

He clenched his jaw, thinking about the photo of Evelyn and that guy. His usually stern face was cracking.

Standing there in the busy restaurant, he felt like an idiot.

But he couldn't stop worrying.

'Evelyn, do you even know what fear is?'

Suddenly, his phone buzzed with an unknown number.

Edward sighed and answered, "Who is this?"

"Is that Mr. Wellington?" a woman's voice asked.

"Yes," Edward replied.

"This is the Mugden City Police Department. What's your relationship with Bart?"

Edward's brow furrowed, "He's my secretary. What's going on?"

"Please come to the station. We'll explain when you get here."

That night felt surreal.

Edward sped down the road in his Lamborghini, wondering how timid Bart ended up at the police station.

As he walked into the station, he saw Peter, a tall, handsome guy in a black leather jacket.

Edward thought, 'That's the guy from the photos with Evelyn!'

Peter noticed Edward too, his sharp eyes sizing him up.

Peter sneered, "You must be Edward. Here to bail out Bart?"

Edward's eyes narrowed, "What's it to you?"

Peter smirked, "He’s here because of me. How could it not be related?"

Edward's face tightened, "Did you do this for revenge?"

"Revenge?" Peter questioned.

"Bart caught you with Evelyn, so you went after him?"

Edward, blinded by anger, didn't realize Peter was an experienced detective, not just some guy defending Evelyn.

Peter laughed, "The fact that you're a CEO is a miracle."

Edward snapped, "A gigolo daring to accuse others at a police station. Impressive."

Peter was confused. 'What is he talking about?'

Just then, two officers walked by and saluted Peter.

"Good evening, Detective Taylor!"

Peter nodded and smiled at them.

Edward's breath caught. 'He's not a gigolo, but a cop?! Detective Taylor... those eyes, that jawline—why do they seem so familiar?'

"Peter!"

Edward stiffened at the familiar female voice behind him.

He turned slowly to see Evelyn standing a few steps away, her gaze icy.

"Evelyn, why are you here?"

Peter ignored Edward and walked to Evelyn, "I'll handle this. You should rest."

"No, I need to handle this myself." Evelyn looked at Edward, her cold eyes piercing his heart.

Since their divorce, she had always been this cold. He used to feel anger, but now, he felt fear.

Deep down, he didn't want her to treat him like a stranger.

He'd rather she hate him, hit him, even bite him, than endure this cold indifference.

"Evelyn," Edward called out, his voice dry.

"Edward, outside," Evelyn said, shooting him a cold glance before turning to leave.

Edward's eyes followed her graceful figure, his steps wanting to follow, but Peter grabbed him.

"I suggest you behave. This is a police station. If you try anything with Evelyn, I'll cuff you," Peter warned.

"If you're from the Taylor family, you should know the kind of relationship Evelyn and I had," Edward said, taking a deep breath to calm himself. "When she was my wife, we respected each other. Now, you have no reason to worry."

"That's not necessarily true," Peter smirked. "A man who spies on his ex-wife is either a psychopath or a murderer in my experience. Never a normal person."

Edward stayed silent.

Evelyn and Edward walked to the quiet back lot of the police station, a secluded spot for their conversation.

They faced each other, the dim light casting long shadows.

"Edward."

"Have you been drinking?"

Before Evelyn could finish, Edward stepped closer, his broad figure overshadowing her, blocking the remaining light.

Evelyn was startled as Edward leaned in, lightly sniffing her hair. "This is strong alcohol. Do you think you're a good drinker? Do you remember how drunk you got at the KTV last time? You were a teetotaler during our three years of marriage."

"I've always had a good tolerance. I've always loved drinking, but you never knew me," Evelyn said coldly, stepping back until her back was against the wall.

"That's because you never showed me your true self, never were honest with me," Edward said, stepping closer, his heart filled with bitterness.

"Edward, you're good at dodging responsibility," Evelyn said, tilting her head, her red lips alluring, making his Adam's apple bob. "Do you forget what kind of person and husband you were? Even if I had opened up to you, you wouldn't have cared. You already disliked me enough back then. Why would I show my true self and make you hate me more?"

Now, she could say these things indifferently.

But her words stirred a storm in Edward's heart.

'So, she has been pretending to please me. Yes, what woman wouldn't want to show her best side to the one she loves? Just like Nicole pretended to be pure and innocent in front of me, even faking depression to keep my heart.'

Edward realized that Evelyn had been humble to the point of dust.

'Nicole's pretense was to control me, to satisfy her desires. Evelyn's pretense was just to avoid my dislike.'

Edward felt his heart twist painfully, his eyes reddening as he tried to speak, but Evelyn coldly interrupted, "Edward, I know why you had Bart follow me. With Ada's wedding approaching, I'm your biggest competitor. You wanted Bart to gather information. I understand. But haven't you already won the first round? Ada chose to attend your reception. Why did you still have Bart follow me and even take pictures of my brother? How despicable!"
