Chapter 24 The Enigmatic Ex-Wife

Nicole left in tears.
The servants whispered behind her back, speculating that she brought bad luck. Every time she came, there would be a quarrel, and then she would leave crying. They wondered if she saw Riverside Villa as a graveyard.
Edward sat stiffly on the couch, staring blankly at his worn-out suit for a long time.
"Mr. Wellington, it's late. Drink your milk and go to sleep."
May came in to bring him hot milk. When she saw the ruined clothes, she sighed, "What a pity!"
There was a pun in her words.
"The next time Nicole comes, keep an eye on her. Don't let her casually enter my bedroom or study. Oh, and Lily's room, too," Edward said in a deep voice.
"Mr. Wellington, don't worry. With your order, I will definitely guard her closely!"
May said happily, "I must pay more attention today. I locked Mrs. Wellington's room. Otherwise, Ms. Adams might sneak in and cause trouble again."
"May, don't say that. Nicole is pretty decent. After all, I owe her three years."
"Well, what about Mrs. Wellington? What has she done wrong? After divorcing her, don't you feel guilty towards her at all?" May's voice grew louder as she defended Lily.
"It was me, not her, who was forced by my grandfather back then. She could have chosen not to marry me."
"So you mean Mrs. Wellington brought this upon herself?"
Edward pursed his pale lips and remained silent.
"Well, rest early then. I won't bother you anymore."
May left the room with a displeased expression, taking the hot milk with her.
Edward widened his eyes and let out a faint sigh.
He thought, 'Is she mad now? I still wanted to drink my milk.
When did Lily manage to manipulate the person closest to me?
She's really cunning.'

Nicole returned home in a sorry state, bringing the bad news with her.
Without the support from the Wellington Group, the Adams Group had become irreparably ruined. It would be incredibly difficult for them to turn the tide.
"Damn it! What does Edward mean? He kept saying he loved you, but it turned out he was lying. Does he think the Adams family is easy to bully?" Dick angrily smashed an ashtray, his eyes turning red.
"Edward couldn't possibly not love me? He divorced without second thoughts for me..." Nicole sobbed, defending herself.

He was weighing the pros and cons! After all, you're a wealthy heiress, while Lily is nothing. She's just a plain country girl. How could she compare to you? Only a fool wouldn't choose you, right?" Dick knew he was speaking in favor of Nicole, but she felt like he was scolding her.

"Nicole, how could Mr. Wellington suddenly change his mind? What happened?!" Bray asked anxiously.

"I don't know either. Today, Edward went to see Ms. Taylor. He came back with a completely changed attitude. He won't have anything to do with us anymore..."

"Dad, Dick, did you do something behind Edward's back that he found out about? He seems to despise our family..."

"Damn it! Is it because of his ex-wife, Lily?" Dick suddenly realized.

"What do you mean?" Nicole's spirits tensed as soon as she heard Lily's name.

"A few days ago, I was at the new bar opened by the Clark family, and I ran into that trouble-seeking crazy woman. However, Edward suddenly appeared to settle things for her. He even made me apologize to his ex-wife! It's really infuriating!" Dick still harbored resentment from the humiliation he suffered last time.

After listening, Nicole's face turned pale with anger. She felt betrayed.

She thought, 'So, did Edward develop feelings for that bitch? Is my worst fear coming true?'

"I can't let Lily come back to him!"

"Alright, as long as Nicole can successfully marry Mr. Wellington and become his wife, why should we worry about turning the tide?" Karen comforted Nicole, her gaze cold. "Lily is already an abandoned woman. No matter how despicable she is, what kind of influence can she have?"

"Our immediate priority is to quickly change the public's perception of the Adams Group and find someone to take the blame for this. That's the key!"

"Take the blame?" Dick thought of someone and smirked maliciously. "No one is more suitable than him!"

The Adams Group was in turmoil, and its reputation was in ruins. In Mugden, dozens of Eilie Furniture stores were empty.

It was even worse that Edward was no longer helping them. If they couldn't find a solution soon, once the money given by the Wellington Group ran out, they would be done for.

On the other hand, KnightSpear Group gained public favor by exposing the true face of counterfeit products from the Adams Group, and the attention on KS World Hotel started to rise again.
"I have been secretly tracking Mike as you instructed, and it turns out he had contact with Dick privately more than once!" William picked up Evelyn's delicate and fair hand, patiently applying nail oil to her newly done wine-red manicure. "You truly have a brilliant mind. You see right through that guy's intentions."

"He used the hotel to line his pockets and collaborated with Dick, so their connection runs deep." Evelyn smiled contentedly, expressing her satisfaction with William's nail care service.

"This weekend, the Adams Group will hold a press conference. I'll show you a spectacle that will get everyone in trouble."

The new mattresses arrived today, and Evelyn was overjoyed. Surprisingly, she went to the back door to inspect the goods with William.

"Ms. Taylor, you don't have to do this kind of manual work yourself. I can go with the housekeeping manager." William softly advised.

"I'm not a delicate princess. I've fought on the battlefield. In one battle, I carried over ten injured soldiers and saved over a hundred lives. Inspecting mattresses won't tire me out."

After speaking, a hint of painful loneliness flashed across Evelyn's crystal-like pupils.

Back on the battlefield of Liberland, she had desperately rescued Edward, among others. Bullets flew intensely, and he fell in a pool of blood after being shot in the leg and shoulder. Despite his furious demands for her to leave, she swore to stand with him until the end.

"Don't mind me! Leave!"

"I told you to leave! Get out of here!"

"No! Even if I have to die here with you, I will not abandon you! We'll leave together!"

At that time, Evelyn had mentally made peace with the idea of dying because she was a woman. It seemed almost impossible for her to carry a man as tall as Edward, who stood at nearly 6.2 feet from the battlefield, to safety.

Even then, she wondered if this meant they were together.

They experienced hardships in life, and even in death, their bodies remained together.

She felt no regrets.

Evelyn forced a bitter smile, her heart pounding heavily and experiencing sharp pains.

She thought, 'Edward, my heart, so bruised and wounded for you, still reacts to you even now. Maybe one shouldn't have encountered someone so remarkable in their youth.'

Evelyn and William arrived at the back door, coincidentally encountering workers unloading the goods.

Seeing Evelyn personally inspecting the merchandise, the housekeeping manager's admiration for her grew.

With William's assistance, Evelyn climbed onto the truck. She randomly opened one of the mattresses, carefully touched it, sat on it, and then revealed a satisfied expression.

"This is great. Unload them."

At that moment, a dazzling blue Lamborghini roared towards them.

The back door was close to the underground garage, so luxury cars often passed by.
