Chapter 391 I Don't Need You to Take Responsibility
Evelyn's heart tightened, her hand trembled, and the photo frame fell to the ground, shattering into pieces.
The splintered glass cut her ankle, and tiny beads of blood oozed from the fine wound.
"What are you doing here?"
A deep voice from behind pierced through her thin back. It was Edward.
Evelyn didn't turn around, just coldly saying, "Sorry to bother you, I'll leave right away."
Edward looked at her back, dressed in his shirt. Under the soft light, Evelyn's delicate figure was faintly visible through the oversized shirt, exuding an allure that made him want to hold her gently in his arms.
His Adam's apple moved restlessly, and a dry sensation spread under his tongue.
Just now, he had suddenly woken up from sleep, drenched in sweat.
He instinctively reached out beside him, but it was empty—Evelyn was gone.
But he noticed her clothes were still on the floor, even her high heels were left behind. She must still be in the villa, so he got out of bed to look for her.
Last night had been a night of passion. Every kiss, every intense moment was deeply etched in his blood, in his heart.
But he couldn't remember how things had gotten out of control. Had he hurt her? Had he made her unable to resist?
A mix of guilt and confusion filled Edward's heart, making his eyes redden as he stepped closer to her.
At that moment, Evelyn suddenly turned around, lowered her head, and walked quickly past him.
Edward's pupils contracted, and he swiftly grabbed her.
"Don't go."
"You have no right to control me."
"We made love."
Edward's left arm circled, pulling her into his embrace.
Staring straight at her, he said slowly, "Evelyn, I said we made love. Don't you have anything to say to me?"
"No." Evelyn avoided his intense gaze and said slowly, "Let go."
"Evelyn, even though we're divorced, I will take responsibility for you." Edward's eyes were sincere, and his grip on her wrist tightened.
"It was just a one-night stand. There's no need for responsibility. We're both adults. We have to own up to our choices." Evelyn sneered, forcefully shaking off his hand, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "Mr. Wellington, just make sure that you don't get played again."
"Evelyn!" Edward's heart ached, and he gripped her shoulder tightly, his strength frightening.
"Don't touch me! Get away from me!"
Evelyn's hands clenched into fists, pounding on Edward's bare chest. Her angry, tearful roar pierced his heart.
Was she crying?
Edward's breath hitched. Ignoring her intense emotions, he opened his arms and held her tightly.
Even Evelyn didn't realize she was already in tears.
Why was she crying? What was there to cry about?
Was it because Edward had hurt her, or because he still hadn't let go of his memories of Nicole?
Clearly, it was the latter that hurt more.
No matter how much she struggled, Edward held her tightly, refusing to let go.
"I will take responsibility for you. I promise I will."
"I don't need your responsibility. I just want you to let me go."
Evelyn's tears fell on his shoulder, burning as if they could leave scars. "Edward, I hate you. I despise you. Don't touch me!"
"If I don't touch you, who else can I touch?" Edward's voice was hoarse, trembling.
"Edward, if you wanted to take responsibility, why did you divorce me? Why didn't you say this back then?"
"What?" Edward was stunned.
"When you should have taken responsibility, you pushed me away. Now that I don't need your responsibility, why can't you just stay away from me?"
Taking advantage of his distraction, Evelyn bit down hard on his arm, as if she wanted to tear his flesh off.
Edward winced in pain and loosened his grip slightly. She broke free from his embrace and disappeared from the study in an instant.
Edward stood there in a daze, replaying her words in his mind.
'Why didn't you say this back then?'
Edward's eyes widened in shock, as if struck by lightning.
Could it be that they had already been intimate before their divorce?
But why, why couldn't he remember any of it?
How could he not remember at all?
Edward felt frozen, unable to move. He stood there dumbfounded, not knowing how long it took to regain a bit of strength, and clutched his chest, which was throbbing with pain.
It was then that he noticed a pile of glittering fragments under the light.
Edward walked over heavily and slowly crouched down.
When he saw the shattered photo frame, with a picture of him and Nicole from high school, his vision went black, and he understood everything.
Evelyn returned to her room, quickly changed into her clothes, and left the villa as fast as she could.
All the way, her face was covered in tears, and she drove recklessly, her heart in turmoil.
As she entered the city, she got into a car accident. Fortunately, it wasn't too serious, but the globally limited luxury sports car's front end was completely wrecked.
Since Evelyn was at fault for the rear-end collision, the owner of the Mercedes let out a sigh of relief.
After all, this was a Bugatti's La Voiture Noire. Even selling himself wouldn't cover the repair costs!
Evelyn hid in the car, too afraid to get out. In her confusion, the first person she thought of was Landon.
She trembled as she dialed Landon's number, and he answered immediately.
"Evelyn, what's wrong?"
"Landon, where are you? Come quickly, I need you."
Twenty minutes later, Landon's Rolls-Royce arrived at the accident scene at top speed, even running two red lights.
"Evelyn!"
Landon got out of the car and saw the sports car wrecked into a heap of scrap metal. His heart sank, and the usually composed and steady man was now flustered.
Adrian, who had also gotten out of the car, tensed up at the sight of the accident.
He was even prepared to perform emergency first aid on Evelyn, given that he was a doctor and his professional skills could come in handy at critical moments.
"Evelyn, are you okay? Are you hurt?" Landon opened the car door and reached in, feeling Evelyn's arms and legs to check for any injuries or fractures.
"I'm fine, Landon." Evelyn's eyes were red and filled with tears, her face as pale as a sheet.
But Landon was shocked as he looked at her, realizing something serious had happened.
He knew Evelyn well; she wasn't someone who cried easily. She had fought for her life on the battlefield—a mere car accident couldn't scare her to tears.
Something serious must have happened.
"Although it seems like just minor injuries, she still needs to go to the hospital for further examination and get a brain CT scan to check for any concussions." Adrian suggested seriously, putting aside his usual playful demeanor.
Landon's brows furrowed deeply, and without a word, he scooped Evelyn up and carried her back to the Rolls-Royce.
At this moment, William also arrived. Seeing Evelyn weakly leaning against Landon, he broke out in a cold sweat.
"Are you okay?"
"William, handle the aftermath. I'm taking Evelyn to the hospital right away," Landon instructed before quickly getting into the car.
"Yes, Mr. Taylor, leave it to me!" William said, his eyes fixed on Evelyn, filled with concern.
Landon held Evelyn tightly in the car, cradling her close.
Adrian watched the scene of sibling affection, feeling a twinge of jealousy but mostly admiration and longing.
In the Mays family, familial bonds were always weak. Everyone was only interested in power and self-interest. Even blood relations held little significance.
This was why he had left home to develop his career abroad.
The only relative who had been kind to him, Aunt Donna, had been driven out of the house because of Charlie and hadn't returned since.
But over the years, Donna had returned home once, and only once.
It was said to be for Evelyn, to seek some treatment or medication for her. Donna had knelt at her father Oscar Mays' study door for three days and nights, without eating or drinking, before Oscar agreed to see her.
This incident didn't make Adrian think less of Donna; instead, it made him respect her even more.
It showed that Charlie treated her well, and the Taylor family treated her like one of their own.
That was why she was willing to go to such lengths for Evelyn.
"Adrian," Landon suddenly called out to him.
Adrian was startled.
"Are you staying here with William and waiting for him to take you back, or are you coming with me?" Landon asked in a deep voice.
Adrian hesitated for a moment, then smiled brightly, "Do you even need to ask? Of course, I'm coming with you."
Landon's heart felt like it had been struck by an arrow, trembling violently.
Back then, his lover had also liked to smile at him like that, saying firmly, "Landon, no matter what happens, I'll stand by your side. You are the only faith I need to protect in my life."
The Rolls-Royce headed towards KnightSpear Hospital.
Landon held Evelyn tightly, gently patting her as if he were coaxing a child, constantly comforting her in a soft voice.
"Landon, it hurts so much."
Evelyn buried her face in Landon's chest. Though she tried to hold back, her soft sobs betrayed her sorrow.
Landon felt the warmth of her tears on his chest, and his heart felt like it was drowning in her tears. "Evelyn, tell me, where does it hurt?"
Evelyn closed her eyes tightly, slowly raising her trembling hand, and pointed her finger at her heart.
"It hurts here."
Landon's eyes widened, and he gripped her cold little hand tightly.
Who else could make the strong Evelyn so heartbroken? It was only Edward.
