Chapter 458 Ninety Percent Sure
Edward's suspicion of Gilbert was not without reason.
As soon as Gilbert reconnected with Evelyn, Edward quietly began a thorough investigation into Gilbert's relationships with the Alexander family, his situation in Mugden, and his activities on Aurora Isle over the years.
Naturally, given Gilbert's shrewdness, highly confidential information was impossible to uncover.
However, it was discovered that he was colluding with the underworld forces on Aurora Isle. The group he founded appeared to be in real estate and gambling, but secretly, it was a den of vice. His extensive connections on Aurora Isle, coupled with collusion between officials and businessmen, provided him with a powerful shield, allowing his business to grow and his background to become increasingly sanitized.
More importantly, he had close ties with people in Torontow!
It was rumored that he influenced both the military and political circles!
Therefore, Edward believed that Gilbert could secretly send messages to Torontow, dispatching people to silently eliminate them amidst the chaos.
Even if the Wellington family and the Taylor family wanted to investigate, what could they do? By then, they wouldn't even find their bodies, leaving no clues and no corpses!
Landon noticed Edward's unusual expression and frowned, asking, "Have you figured out who did this?"
Edward took a deep breath, "Now's not the time to discuss this. Let's deal with the immediate trouble first."
He couldn't just accuse Gilbert in front of Landon without evidence.
That would make it seem like he was taking the opportunity to smear his rival without proof.
"Something's off. You know who sent these people, don't you?" Landon shot two more people, seemingly competing with Edward.
He and Evelyn were alike in their relentless pursuit of the truth and intolerance for half-hearted answers.
Seeing their precise shooting, the enemy hesitated to approach.
"If they are from the Torontow underworld, then I can't be sure." Edward gripped his gun tightly, his eyes flashing coldly in the night, "But if they are from the Torontow military, then I'm ninety percent sure."
As Landon was puzzled, someone shouted at them through a loudspeaker.
"South Island is an important military base of our country! We order you to lay down your weapons, cease resistance, and surrender! Otherwise, we will not be polite!"
"It's the military." Landon's pupils contracted!
He never expected that merely chasing a small fugitive would alarm the Torontow military!
Who exactly was this Lloyd?
Edward clenched his teeth, his lips moving slightly as he muttered, "Just as I suspected. Gilbert, it is you, isn't it?""Surrender your weapons quickly! I guarantee you will be treated humanely!" The voice shouted again.
The island's air, originally humid and stifling, now felt like the falling raindrops were turning into ice.
"Don't listen to his nonsense."
Landon was fully alert, his eyes flashing with a bloodthirsty ferocity that had been absent for years, "Believe me, if we go out now, what awaits us is inhumane treatment. I've used such deceitful tactics too many times before."Edward was momentarily stunned, staring at Landon's cold, ruthless face with surprise.
It seemed Landon's past was quite eventful as well.
At that moment, Edward's ears twitched.
Hearing footsteps on the grass, he lowered his voice cautiously, "They're closing in. I'll run to the left to draw their fire. You take the others and go find Lloyd's hideout!"
"No way! How can I leave you alone?" Landon refused decisively, without hesitation.
"If we all die here, you'll regret saying that."
"If you die here, how will I explain it to Evelyn?"
Danger was approaching, but they were at an impasse.v"Landon," Edward suddenly called out.
Landon's heart trembled!
Edward calling him like that evoked a subtle reaction in him, a mix of pain and bitterness he couldn't quite describe.
"No matter what, you must return to Evelyn. Evelyn told me that the most important people in her life are her family." Edward's words were sincere, his gaze piercing as he looked at Landon.
"And what about you, Edward? Aren't you important to Evelyn?"
Landon's eyes reddened as he gripped Edward's arm tightly, "It took Evelyn thirteen years to get to you. How many more years do you want her to endure the pain you bring? Is this what a person should do?"
Edward smiled bitterly, his eyes shining with resolute determination, "When we divorced, I must have already died once in Evelyn's heart. If I die again, she should gradually get used to it."Before Landon could respond, Edward suddenly dashed out!
"Edward!"
Landon couldn't stop him, only watching as Edward ran into the dark forest, with the enemies immediately chasing after him like sharks smelling blood!
Edward used himself as bait, trying to divert the danger from Landon and the others.
He was now ninety percent sure that the quick arrival of these enemies was connected to Gilbert, who was issuing orders from Mugden.
If that was the case, their target was him.
As long as he and Landon separated, Landon and the others might have a chance to escape.
Sharp branches scratched Edward's arms, neck, and face, but he couldn't care less, as gunfire continued behind him, with bullets exploding at his feet!
Thanks to his extensive experience in wilderness combat, he had not yet perished!
"Gilbert, you better hope I don't make it back alive." Edward gritted his teeth, veins bulging on his forehead, "If I survive, your days are numbered!"
In the midst of the fierce battle, a bullet shot from behind!
He heard the terrifying sound of it cutting through the air, but with the firepower in front, he couldn't turn around in time!
Edward felt a bone-crushing pain in his left shoulder, his face turning pale as he broke out in a cold sweat!
He had been shot!
Fortunately, it wasn't a vital area, but the excruciating pain was unbearable for an ordinary person.
A voice came from behind, and the killers in front lowered their guns in response.
