Chapter 264 Being Selfish for Once
Edward just straight-up collapsed and puked blood right in front of them, scaring the crap outta the three guys!
Lucky for them, the hospital was right there. Eric and Bart freaked out, rushing to help the docs and nurses get him into the ER.
William just stood there, totally stunned, watching as Edward, with blood on his lips and a face white as a ghost, got wheeled into surgery.
'What the hell just happened? Is this another one of his stunts? But he brought Evelyn back from Thunder Peak to the hospital without a hitch. How can such a tough guy just drop like that?' William thought.
"Mr. Clark, is Mr. Wellington gonna be okay?" Bart's fists were clenched, tears welling up in his eyes.
"He'll be fine." Eric stared at the emergency room light, scared out of his mind, his eyes bloodshot. "Edward's the toughest, most fearless guy I know. He'll pull through."
Just then, one of Landon's bodyguards came up to William and bowed. "William, Mr. Taylor wants you upstairs."
"Alright." William felt a heavy weight in his chest. Just as he was about to leave, he stopped and whispered to the bodyguard, "Edward from the Wellington Group is in the ER. Get two top docs to treat him."
Evelyn slept until the next evening before she slowly opened her eyes, feeling recharged.
"Where am I?"
She felt weak all over, like her bones were about to fall apart.
"Evelyn! You're awake? It's Aaron!" Aaron shouted excitedly, throwing himself onto the bed and hugging her.
He hadn't slept all night, holding Evelyn's hand tightly, his eyes red and swollen.
"Aaron? Is it really you? Aaron?" Evelyn's eyes widened, filling with tears, her nose turning red.
Aaron nodded vigorously and kissed Evelyn's forehead.
She wasn't as hot anymore; the fever had mostly gone down.
The doc had said last night that it was lucky she was brought in in time; otherwise, things could've gotten bad.
"Is everything okay with the unit? How'd you get leave to come back?" Evelyn wasn't worried about herself but about Aaron.
"It doesn't matter as much as you. You'll always come first."
"Aaron." Evelyn hugged Aaron's neck, pressing her cheek against his.
Aaron hadn't seen Evelyn in forever. Seeing her so much thinner, with a misty look in her eyes, his heart ached like it was stabbed by a thousand needles, his throat bitter and sore.
"By the way, how did I get back?" Evelyn asked weakly, leaning against the headboard with Aaron's help.
Aaron pursed his lips, staying silent.
"Where's Edward?" Evelyn's long lashes trembled, her voice hoarse.
"He came back with us on the helicopter. He's fine, Evelyn. You don't need to worry about him," Aaron replied coldly.
But for some reason, Evelyn felt a sudden pang of anxiety and urgently asked, "Where is he?"
At that moment, the door to the ward opened.
Landon and William walked in one after the other. Seeing Evelyn awake, both of them beamed with joy.
"Evelyn!" William was so excited he couldn't stop smiling, his eyes moist.
He wanted to run over but, seeing Aaron there, held back and walked over, kneeling by the bed.
"Did I scare you last night, William?" Evelyn's face was still pale, but her eyes had a glimmer of light as she smiled at him. "I'm sorry, I was being stubborn this time. But it was a matter of life and death; I had no other choice."
William gazed deeply at her, his throat choked with emotion, unable to speak, just shaking his head.
He had heard that Evelyn had nearly fallen off a cliff and been shattered to pieces. It was Edward who, at the critical moment, risked his life to save her.
"Evelyn, there's something I gotta tell you." William hesitated a bunch but finally spilled the beans, "Edward's got some serious internal injuries and he puked blood."
"What?" Evelyn shot up, eyes wide, breathing heavy. "How could this happen?"
The news hit Landon and Aaron like a ton of bricks, their faces stunned.
"The doc said his back took a nasty hit, messed up his organs, and that's why he puked blood," William explained, keeping it real.
Even though he couldn't stand Edward, he wasn't about to twist the truth out of jealousy.
Evelyn's eyes narrowed as she remembered Edward pulling her back from the cliff, rolling away to dodge the landslide, and smashing his back on a big rock.
'But he said he was fine! Liar!' Evelyn thought, both worried and pissed, her eyes red as she tried to get out of bed.
Her sudden move freaked out Landon, Aaron, and William, who all rushed to stop her.
"Evelyn, where are you going? To find Edward?" Aaron pressed her shoulders.
"He got hurt because of me. I can't just sit here and do nothing!" Evelyn's heart ached, her resolve to find Edward unshakable.
"Why do you wanna see him? Whatever happens to him is his own fault!" Aaron snapped.
"Aaron."
Aaron's eyes were blazing, his fingers digging into her thin shoulders. "It's been thirteen years. Can you stop caring about Edward? I'm begging you, okay? Just be selfish for once, okay?"
"Aaron."
Evelyn took a deep breath and said softly, "I can be heartless, but I can't be inhumane. You can't deny one thing: if it weren't for him, you might not be seeing me right now."
In the end, Aaron couldn't change her mind.
She found out which room Edward was in and, with William's help, pushed open the door.
Both of them were stunned; the room was empty, the bed neatly made.
But Evelyn could still feel Edward's unique presence in the air, wrapping tightly around her heart like an impenetrable web.
"Excuse me, where's the patient who was here?" Evelyn asked a passing nurse.
"He was discharged this afternoon."
At Edward's insistence, Eric and Bart had moved him to another hospital.
In the new hospital room, Edward lay flat on the white bed, hooked up to an IV.
Overnight, he looked way more haggard, but his ridiculously handsome face was still striking enough to make Eric grit his teeth.
Eric sat backward on a chair, arms crossed over the backrest, looking at him with amusement.
Eric wasn't heartless about his health; he just didn't wanna get all heavy and sentimental. "Don't worry. You ain't gonna die. I got the best internal medicine docs in the country on it. If they can't help, I'll find someone abroad. I got plenty of cash."
Edward frowned, finding him annoying.
"Even if you're paralyzed and can only move your eyes, I'll keep you by my side! Even if you lose your wife, you still got friends. I won't ditch you!" Eric patted his chest, feeling all heroic.
Edward's thin lips twitched, feeling like Eric was low-key roasting him. "If you shut up, we can still be friends."
Eric had a sheepish grin, but his mood was heavy. Still, he tried to lighten the mood. "Edward, you gotta hang in there. If something happens to you, who will Byron rely on?"
Edward's heart tightened a bit.
He remembered when he puked blood, feeling like all hope was lost.
Only two faces popped into his mind—Byron and Evelyn.
