Chapter 429 I'll Count to Three
Evelyn brought Edward home for the night, and the news reached Landon's ears. Landon wanted to rush over to stop it, drag out Edward, who had once hurt Evelyn so badly, and give him a good beating.
Unexpectedly, Ulysses stopped him.
"Landon, forget it. What's the point of going over now? The night is already over. They're not kids. If something was going to happen, it already did. Could you have stopped it?"
"What do you mean?" Landon looked at him in astonishment. "You support them being together?"
"At the very least, I don't support Evelyn being with Gilbert," Ulysses replied bluntly.
"Even so, you're just making Evelyn settle for less. Neither Edward nor Gilbert is right for her," Landon said, shaking his head in frustration.
"But Edward is sincere about Evelyn. He did a lot of bad things in the past, but he's repented and has risked his life multiple times to make up for the harm he caused her."
"Gilbert, I haven't interacted with him much, but I can tell his intentions towards Evelyn aren't pure. He has some ulterior motives. Charlie's attitude towards him has changed drastically recently. Can you honestly say he hasn't been scheming behind the scenes?"
Ulysses rarely got involved in family matters, but this concerned Evelyn's lifelong happiness, so he couldn't ignore it.
Landon furrowed his brows deeply, falling into thought.
Ulysses usually seemed unreliable, but at critical moments, he had some real insights.
"I've had my suspicions, too. I later found out that on the night Dad, Donna, Joyce, and Susan returned to the country, they went to the hospital with Gilbert. Only Dad went upstairs, while Gilbert stayed behind, seemingly to avoid suspicion."
"And on that very day, Dad told me he wanted to match Evelyn with Gilbert, to form an alliance with the Alexander family. Simon and I were both strongly opposed, but Dad seemed determined to go through with it."
"No way, I don't agree with this marriage!" Ulysses' sharp brows furrowed, and in his agitation, he crushed a glass in his hand!
Landon blinked and stepped back, afraid the glass shards would hit him.
"If Charlie dares to marry Evelyn to Gilbert, I won't say I'll take Gilbert's life, but I'll make sure he has a hard time!"
At that moment, the study door opened.
Adrian brazenly walked in with a tray, startling them both.
"Mr. Mays, we're having a conversation. Out of courtesy, shouldn't you knock?" Landon said with a hint of helplessness but no real resentment.
"Do you see my hands free?"
Adrian glared, walked over angrily, and placed the tray on the coffee table, saying sarcastically, "I used my butt to open the door. If you think I'm impolite, I can go out and knock again."
Ulysses took out a cigarette and placed it between his lips, looking at Adrian with an amused gaze.
The way he spoke to Landon just now seemed a bit like a girl playfully scolding her crush.
"Do you need something?" Landon asked, lowering his eyes again.
"Donna made some soup herself and asked me to bring it to you to nourish your bodies," Adrian said, deliberately putting on a subservient attitude to annoy Landon.
"I don't like soup. Bring me a beer instead, chilled."
Ulysses casually crossed his long legs on the edge of the coffee table, the cigarette bobbing up and down between his lips. "Got a light? Light my cigarette for me."
"You're pushing your luck!" Adrian's face turned red with anger, and he almost wanted to pour the hot soup over his head!
What an attitude! Did he think he was a servant to be ordered around?
"Ulysses, stop messing around."
Landon finally spoke slowly, his voice low and magnetic, exactly the tone Adrian liked. "Mr. Mays is Aunt Donna's nephew and a guest of the Taylor family. Don't be so disrespectful."
"Fine, I'm being disrespectful. I'll leave then, so I don't annoy anyone."
Ulysses put away the cigarette, stood up smoothly and gracefully, grabbed a bowl of soup, took a sip, and smacked his lips.
"Tastes too bland."
Adrian's narrow eyes glared, almost flipping the coffee table.
Charlie was such a formidable figure, and all his children were talented. How did Ulysses turn out to be such a genetic anomaly?
Ulysses yawned and left the study.
Only Landon and Adrian were left, and the air suddenly became quiet, gradually exuding a subtle atmosphere.
Landon didn't look up at him, completely ignoring him.
Such cold indifference made Adrian's heart race with anxiety.
He had seen many people, but he couldn't tell if Landon was playing hard to get or if he had lost interest after that night.
Landon had been overworked in recent years, and his eyesight wasn't as good as before. He wore contact lenses when he went out, but at home, he had a pair of silver-framed glasses in the study for reading or reviewing documents.
At this moment, Landon, sitting upright, took out his glasses from the case, lowered his long lashes, and slowly put them on.
He was already handsome and dignified, and the glasses made him look even more refined and elegant.
Adrian's breath hitched, his heart pounding wildly, and his throat went dry. He couldn't help but walk towards him.
Landon was focused on his work when he suddenly felt the chair turn.
Their eyes met, and Adrian's arms rested on the edge of the desk, his tall figure leaning down, trapping Landon under his warm chest.
"Mr. Mays, what are you doing?" Landon raised his face, looking at him with deep eyes.
"Landon, has anyone ever told you that you look charming with glasses?"
Adrian's eyes were slightly red, and he boldly lifted his left leg, placing his knee on Landon's thigh, gently rubbing it.
Landon's brows furrowed slightly, and his breath deepened.
His extremely restrained gaze slowly moved down, lingering on the exposed chest and the enticing collarbone peeking out from the blue silk shirt.
That night of passionate kisses, he had torn Adrian's shirt, held his waist tightly, and kissed him madly on his lips, neck, and collarbone.
He was drunk, but he remembered he was very fond of his collarbone.
Because the same thing had been a private pleasure between him and his lover.
They had done it countless times.
"Landon, why are you ignoring me?"
Adrian's arms wrapped around Landon's neck, his beautiful face showing a seductive expression, his eyes full of affection, more alluring than any woman. "When you were drunk, you couldn't stop kissing me. Now that you're sober, you act like you don't know me?"
"Are all the men in the Taylor family so heartless?"
"Get off me," Landon said, his lips parting slightly.
At this moment, thinking about that night made him even more irritable, and he lost the patience he had for Adrian.
Adrian was used to Landon's gentle demeanor. Suddenly being treated so coldly, he felt a surge of resentment and held him even tighter.
"Landon, you hypocrite. You bullied me that night, and now you treat me like this?"
"I'll count to three."
"One, two, three, so what?" Adrian counted for him, his eyes red with anger.
Landon took a deep breath, lowered his eyes, and suddenly pushed him hard.
Adrian reacted quickly enough to pull back in time, but he was still pushed off balance!
