Chapter 588 Pie from the Sky, Actually a Trap
Edward sat next to Evelyn, placing the fruit platter in front of her.
"Bart, it's blazing hot out there. Have some water and fruit first," Evelyn said, pushing the fruit toward Bart.
"Thanks a lot, Mrs. Wellington! Really, thank you!" Bart's eyes filled with tears of gratitude.
Edward gave him a stern look. "Eat up quick, then we’ll talk business."
Bart grabbed an orange slice, ate it quickly, then wiped his mouth with a handkerchief and sat up straight.
"Just like you told me, I reported William's arrest to Chief Carter's boss and put together a detailed report. This morning, Chief Carter got suspended for abuse of power and now he's under investigation by the Public Officials Investigation Department. He's got a ton of dirt on him, so he's definitely going down. The Alexander family just lost another loyal servant!"
Mr. Wellington gave a slight nod.
These corporate family cleaners are easy to catch; once you start investigating, they can't escape.
Evelyn's eyes widened as she looked at Edward. "You did this? When?"
Edward's stealthy moves were nothing new to her; he always managed to strike at the perfect moment, catching their enemies off guard.
"Early this morning, after you fell asleep."
Evelyn's lashes fluttered as she held his arm, feeling warm inside. "You could've handled it after waking up."
"Calvin and Chief Carter bullied William, upsetting you. If I didn't deal with them, I couldn't sleep," Edward said, gently holding her hand in his.
Seeing the dark circles under his eyes, Evelyn felt a pang of pain. "You forgot about your migraines? You need adequate sleep to help your condition. Why do you keep pushing yourself and making me worry?"
"When it comes to you and those around you, I always want to do my best without delay."
Seeing her still upset, Edward softened his tone. "I was wrong. Next time, I'll listen to you."
Bart continued, "Also, the Alexander family has officially taken over the project."
"Calvin lucked out."
Evelyn clenched her fists in frustration. "He was already suppressed by Gilbert and despised by Elbert because of Randy and Helen. Now he gets a big project, giving him a chance to recover."
Edward's lips curved slightly. "There's no such thing as a free lunch."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Mr. Taylor's Torontow resort project had a major issue that Mr. Wellington discovered. He advised Mr. Taylor to transfer the project quickly," Bart eagerly explained.
Evelyn was shocked. "Landon isn't a fool like Calvin. He would've spotted the problem early. How did this happen?"
"The land auction in Torontow is chaotic, far less transparent than ours."
Edward didn't hold back and explained, "The resort's location is great, but there's a serious traffic issue. There's a small village with about ten households, less than 3,000 feet from the project, blocking future expansion and even the main road construction. This wasn't clearly marked on the initial land plan. The local government hid it to attract foreign investment."
Evelyn's anger flared. "How can they do that? It's fraud, led by the government!"
"Mrs. Wellington, how messed up Torontow's land market is!"
Bart seized the chance to praise Edward. "Luckily, Mr. Wellington's sharp eye caught this and informed Mr. Taylor, avoiding bigger losses when construction starts!"
"Are you implying Landon isn't smart?" Evelyn crossed her arms and gave Bart a stern look.
Bart stiffened in fear. "Mrs. Wellington, I meant no disrespect!"
"Bart, watch your mouth."
Edward's sharp gaze was like a dart. "Loose lips sink ships. No bonus."
Bart was speechless.
Edward's wisdom came from years of managing the group and learning from countless mistakes. He simply knew Torontow better than Landon, and that knowledge was crucial.
"I pointed out the issue to Landon, hoping he'd transfer the land soon, but he couldn't find a buyer." Edward's tone was calm, not feeling he did anything remarkable.
"So yesterday, when William had trouble, you thought of using the project as a bargaining chip. That's why you asked Landon to bring the transfer contract?" Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
Edward stroked her silky hair. "I can't hide anything for you."
"Wow, if you weren't in business, you'd make a great con artist, leading the industry."
Edward's smile was indulgent. "I didn't deceive Calvin, just set a trap. He chose to walk into it. We never forced him. He could've refused to reconcile with Mr. Taylor for his brother's sake."
"Sure, Mr. Wellington's schemes can give people a phobia."
Evelyn poked his firm chest. "Your trap has many loopholes. Calvin could've stalled us and sent someone to inspect the site. It's because you know his desperate situation in the Alexander family. He's eager to prove himself and impulsive, so he'd jump at the chance without thinking. Brotherly love? Calvin only thought of his comeback, forgetting Randy."
Edward admired her, as if she were a rare beauty. "The best strategy is to use the opponent's psychology."
"Mr. Alexander, thinking he got a great deal, will soon regret it." Evelyn's smile returned.
But the mood quickly soured when Peter called.
"Evelyn, something's up. Promise me, stay calm."
Peter took a deep breath. "Just now, Randy was bailed out by Elbert and Calvin."
