Chapter 616 The Trial is Imminent

Simon came in a hurry, and he wasn't here for dinner—he had urgent matters to discuss.

Although Peter seemed careless, he actually had a thoughtful side. He specially bought Evelyn and Jennifer's favorite desserts, waiting in line for nearly two hours.

But he didn't expect Molly to be there too.

If he'd known, he would have bought an extra one. Now it seemed a bit unfair.

"Wow! Is this panda-shaped dessert their new item? So cute!"

Jennifer loved these kinds of sweets. She couldn't resist when she saw them, picking one up and swallowing it right away!

William fell silent.

Jennifer was always so refined when eating with him. He never imagined she'd get this excited over her favorite treats.

Evelyn couldn't help eating one too. Her blissful smile infected Edward, who quietly made a mental note of the dessert brand—he'd buy them for Evelyn often from now on.

From now on, big things and small, every little detail about her, he would slowly learn from Simon, Peter, and the others.

Charlie might not be the one who understood Evelyn best, but her family definitely knew her better than anyone in the world. Since he'd taken on the responsibility of caring for her from the Taylor family, he had to do everything perfectly.

He wanted Evelyn to feel every day with him that she'd never been separated from her loved ones. He could play any role she needed.

"Molly, you should try some too."

Peter picked up a panda cookie and walked over to Molly, bending down to hand it to her with a smile. "I didn't know you'd be here tonight, so I didn't buy enough. I'll make it up to you next time."

Molly loved the panda cookie and was rubbing her hands together, about to take it.

But suddenly, Eric's big hand swooped in and grabbed the panda cookie, opening his mouth wide and swallowing it in one bite!

Molly asked, "What?"

Peter's sharp eyes narrowed, his hand frozen in mid-air slowly curling into a fist.

"Dinner's coming soon. If you eat too many snacks, you won't be able to enjoy the feast they prepared for you!" Eric's Adam's apple bobbed frantically, his face turning red.

But in front of his rival, he had to maintain the dignity of the Clark Group heir. He had to save face and protect Molly!

"Mr. Clark, there are plenty more here. No need to grab."

Peter looked at Eric's flushed face and couldn't help but ask with amusement, "Also, are you sure you don't need some water to wash that down?"

Eric wanted to snap back, but his throat was blocked by a big sticky lump. One more word and he'd spray it everywhere.

William, Jennifer, and the others didn't know what was going on, but Evelyn saw it all clearly.

Eric's guard was completely up against Peter.

...

The little episode didn't affect the pleasant atmosphere at dinner. Evelyn and Edward's cooking still had everyone enjoying themselves thoroughly.

After dinner, Jennifer took Molly upstairs to play board games, making it easier for them to discuss serious matters.

Simon drained his glass of ice water in one gulp, setting the glass down heavily on the table. "Tiffany's case officially goes to court next Friday."

At the mention of Tiffany, who hadn't been seen in a long time, everyone's expressions darkened.

"I know."

Edward's brow twitched slightly, his voice barely suppressing his emotions. "Not a single day goes by that I forget how my mother died. Not a single day that I forget to avenge my mother and all those innocent lives Tiffany destroyed."

Evelyn's heart pounded violently. Under the table, she slowly reached over with her warm hand, grasping his trembling palm tightly.

Edward immediately interlaced his fingers with hers, gazing deeply into her eyes.

"A few days ago, I looked into Tiffany's situation at the detention center. She's adapted quite well, using her status as a tycoon's wife to grease palms. She even has followers and is living quite comfortably. I heard she's having a great time in there, even has skincare products and cigarettes."

Peter clenched his teeth in a cold laugh. "Looks like your dad hasn't completely given up on Tiffany. He's still protecting her dignity. He probably still intends to get her out."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Just one thing—take away her diapers, and that'll do it."

"Patrick is not my father."

Edward's eyes were bloodshot red. "From the moment my mother stopped breathing, he stopped being my father."

"Edward..." Evelyn's breath caught in her chest.

"All these years, the only reason I stayed at the Wellington Group was because it was my mother's dying wish. She hoped I'd never be bullied by anyone again. She hoped I could earn Patrick's respect, that I could make something of myself and become grandfather's most satisfying grandson."

"After that, I went crazy trying to prove myself, trying to seize power at the Wellington Group. But it had nothing to do with them."

"I just wanted to fulfill my mother's wish, to become strong enough to make her proud."

Edward closed his dark eyes. "But in the end, I became a clown, living under the same roof as my mother's killer for years, even working for that damned man."

"If it weren't for Evelyn standing by me, if it weren't for Kimberly sacrificing herself to get us crucial information."

Even so, as long as Tiffany was alive, he felt he had no face to stand before his mother's grave.

"Edward, what are you saying? You're not thinking of giving up the Wellington Group to join the Taylor family, are you?"

Simon frowned, looking him over. "Evelyn hasn't had a single good day with you, and now you want her to start from scratch with you?"

Peter also disapproved. "Exactly. If you want to marry Evelyn, you need at least a hundred billion dollars as a wedding gift. How else could we agree?"

Evelyn was completely speechless!

These family members of hers were the best at causing trouble!

Eric slapped his shoulder indignantly. "Edward! Nobody knows better than me how hard you fought to get to the CEO position! If you're upset, you should take the Wellington Group from your father."

"You guys don't have that kind of dysfunctional family background, so don't make it sound so simple."

Evelyn's sharp eyes swept across Eric's face. "And you—is that even human talk? Gilbert loves pitting his brothers against each other. Why don't we let Mr. Wellington practice on you first?"

Eric immediately shut up, scared.

"Edward, they don't understand you, but I do."

Evelyn sighed, placing her soft palm on the back of his hand. "If it were me, I'd do everything possible to fulfill my mother's wish too."

"But I also understand what your mother really wanted—for you to have the ability to protect yourself, for you to become strong."

"The path you chose wasn't wrong. Even if you hate your father, grandfather has always loved you and given you a second chance at life. For grandfather's sake, your persistence and hard work are far from meaningless."

"Evelyn... thank you." Edward held back the stinging in his nose, his voice trembling as he called her name.

"Thank me for what? I just understand you, that's all." Evelyn smiled at him so sweetly.

"Now, Lloyd has turned state's witness, identifying Tiffany for hiring a hitman, plus drug use and possession charges. Her sentence won't be light."

Simon's brow furrowed deeply. "But I know that's still far from enough. What we want is the death penalty for Tiffany. After all, she has more than one life on her hands!"

"It'll be difficult."

Peter shook his head with a frown. "Conspiracy to murder, no direct evidence. And Kimberly's recording was made secretly—it can't be used as court evidence."

"There's also the case of Mr. Wellington's mother. That case is over twenty years old. Even with that maid's testimony, there's still insufficient evidence."

"Plus, Tiffany's defense attorney this time is still Gordon. Who knows what vicious tactics that guy will use against us!"

William's face suddenly paled. He took a deep breath. "This time, I'll appear in court as Kimberly's attorney."

Simon and Peter looked shocked, "William, you're going to court?"

But Evelyn and Edward remained calm, even giving him trusting looks.

Because a few days ago, William had already told them about this idea and received their support.

He'd been the Taylor family's secretary for many years, and many people had forgotten—maybe even Gordon had forgotten...

William was a top law school graduate. If he'd wanted to compete with Gordon, there would be no place for Gordon in Mugden's legal circles.

"This court appearance is also my final battle with Gordon."

William's eyes were sharp and resolute. "I know what Gordon can't stand most—that feeling of utter defeat. Especially losing to me—that would be worse than killing him."

Evelyn nodded thoughtfully.

One phone call could bring countless excellent lawyers rushing over to work for the Wellington Group and KnightSpear Group.

But in terms of damage to Gordon, William was the sharpest blade!

"William, this is hard on you." Simon sighed softly, moved.

William poured himself a drink and raised his glass to Edward. "Mr. Wellington, shouldn't we have a toast?"

A strong warmth flooded Edward's heart. He immediately stood up, raising his glass. "William, thank you for always taking care of Evelyn, and thank you for being willing to help. May we both get what we wish for."

"We will definitely get what we wish for." William nodded hard, his eyes brimming with tears.

Evelyn also stood up, smiling as she raised her glass, her slender arm wrapping around the man's waist. "Come on! Everyone together!"

Six glasses raised overhead, filled with the light of hope for victory.

"Let's do this!"
