Chapter 493 Belongs Only to Me
Seeing that she was about to disappear from his sight, Gilbert took a deep breath, tears welling up.
"Evelyn, my mother is sick, very sick."
Evelyn suddenly stopped in her tracks but didn't turn around.
"Her Alzheimer's has reached its late stage. She's rarely lucid now, and even eating has become very difficult. Her limbs are showing signs of paralysis."
"These days, I've pushed aside all my work to stay with her in the hospital. I only managed to attend some important events in the past couple of days."
Tears glistened at the corners of Gilbert's eyes, his voice soaked with bitter guilt. "Evelyn, these days, I haven't been able to take care of you because I've been looking after my mother. So many important things have happened around you, and I couldn't help you. I'm really sorry."
"Even if it made you doubt me, I'm sorry for making you worry."
"My mother often doesn't even recognize who I am, but she frequently mentions you and asks when she can see you. I know this is shameless, but she really doesn't have much time left. I'm begging you to see her, just once. Talk to her; it might help her condition."
Evelyn stood with her back to him, saying nothing.
Just as she was about to step inside, the door opened.
"Aunt Donna?" Evelyn was surprised to see Donna come out.
Donna smiled gently at her, then turned to look at Gilbert with a calm expression. "Gilbert, Mr. Taylor wants to see you. Please, come in."
"What did you say? Dad wants to see him?"
Evelyn's eyes widened, and she tried to keep her voice down. "He's still sick. What's he up to?"
Donna looked helpless. "This is your dad's decision. I'm just following his instructions."
"Thank you for coming out to greet me, Mrs. Taylor."
Gilbert lightly adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, a dark glint flashing in his eyes, and a barely noticeable smirk tugged at his lips.
After entering Oasis Villa, Gilbert was led by Donna to the study to see Charlie.
In the Taylor family, guests usually went to the tea room or the reception room. For men, the study was as private as the bedroom.
Over the years, no one but Elbert had entered his study.
Gilbert was the second. This showed how much Charlie valued him.
Evelyn sat on the living room sofa, her eyes dark and stormy.
"Evelyn, your dad has been getting very close to Gilbert lately. And as far as I know, he's met with Elbert privately more than once."
Donna held Evelyn's cold hand. "I have a feeling your dad is serious."
"What?"
"He wants you to marry into the Alexander family."
"Dream on."
Evelyn clenched her fists, a cold fury surging through her chest.
Donna frowned deeply, speaking earnestly. "I know you can't marry Gilbert."
"If you don't want to, Joyce, Susan, and I will do everything we can to persuade your dad. You won't have to marry someone you don't love and struggle in an unhappy marriage."
"Charlie doesn't really want an alliance. He just wants to break up me and Edward."
Evelyn closed her eyes in frustration and sighed. "He'll do anything to keep me and Edward apart. That ruthless determination to achieve his goals—I know it too well. Because I've inherited that trait perfectly from him."
"Indeed, among all the kids in the family, you're the most like your dad."
Donna pondered for a moment, her eyes full of worry. "Evelyn, is it really Edward or no one?"
"Edward or no one." Evelyn didn't hesitate.
At that moment, her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the name on the screen, her eyes moistening, and a gentle smile involuntarily curved her lips.
"I'll leave you two alone. I'm heading upstairs." Donna got up and tactfully left.
Evelyn bit her lip, her heart pounding as she answered the call.
"Evelyn, still awake?" Edward's voice was low and soft, incredibly charming.
But somehow, it made her feel so secure.
"Not sleepy." Evelyn got up, walked to the balcony, and looked up at the moon in the gentle evening breeze.
"Can't sleep without me holding you?" Edward chuckled softly.
"Of course not! A man isn't my everything!" Evelyn's cheeks burned, but she was stubborn.
"But Evelyn, you are my everything."
Edward's sudden declaration of love made her heart race, her blood heating up, almost to the point of boiling.
She missed him so much.
This call only made her miss him more, an endless tide of longing.
"What did you do today?" She changed the subject.
"Besides breathing, I was thinking of you."
"Edward, sweet talk is nice, but too much of it gets uncomfortable." Evelyn shrugged.
Edward obediently got to the point. "There's something I haven't told you. Just today, the people I sent to Roam brought me some news."
"Roam? You mean the maid who was instructed by Tiffany to switch your mother's depression medication?" Evelyn quickly caught on.
"Yes, I've been looking for her. But she's very cunning and cautious, not living in Roam's city center and having changed her name. The restaurant she ran closed down six months ago because her husband gambled and owed a lot of money. The restaurant was used to pay off the debt."
"My people searched all over Roam and finally found her in a village. She's now living in poverty, abused by her husband, and her young son has turned to crime. He's been in jail for two years for theft. Her life is a complete mess."
"Serves her right. Even God is punishing her!"
Evelyn was furious, gritting her teeth. "No matter how hard her life is, it can't make up for the evil she did!
Because of her greed, a vibrant life was lost. She should pay with her life!"
"But before that, I need to capture her and control her."
By now, Edward was calm and composed, planning each step carefully. "And everything must be done in secret. If Tiffany or Debra finds out about my plan, they might interfere and silence her."
Evelyn nodded, fully agreeing.
"Evelyn, how are things on your end? How's Uncle Charlie?"
"Everything's fine, really." Evelyn forced a smile.
"Really? I feel like you have something on your mind."
Edward was attuned to her, sensing even the slightest change in her tone, even over the phone.
"Really, there's nothing. Don't overthink it."
Evelyn took a deep breath, her voice tender. "Rest well, and I'll see you when I get back."
Edward's voice, laced with a smile, softly wrapped around her ear, reaching her heart.
"Always waiting for you."
Evelyn and Edward continued their sweet conversation.
Unbeknownst to them, Gilbert stood silently in the shadows, staring at her back, gritting his teeth and muttering:
"Evelyn, I don't care who you're with. Because soon, you'll be mine, only mine."
