Chapter 293: Take Action
A gust of wind narrowly brushed past Edward's nose—dark, fierce, and swift!
If he hadn't been skilled and strong enough, he might not have dodged that sudden strike!
Just from this move, Edward could tell that beneath Gilbert's gentle exterior lay a nearly split personality—a ferocious beast of violence and brutality!
He absolutely couldn't let Evelyn go with him.
Absolutely not!
Everything happened so fast that Evelyn, still walking forward, hadn't noticed a thing, completely unaware of what was happening behind her.
Gilbert swung his fist at Edward again, but Edward, quick as lightning, dodged in time. He then lifted his long leg high and swept it across, narrowly missing Gilbert's chest!
Gilbert staggered back two steps, planting his feet firmly. Underneath his delicate silver metal cufflinks, his seemingly weak hands were clenched so tightly that veins bulged.
Edward, who had been ambushed, stood there unmoved as if he were deeply rooted to the ground, without a hint of wavering.
Gilbert slowly pushed up his glasses, his eyes bloodshot!
For the past decade on Aurora Isle, to make himself stronger, to have the ability to protect Angela and recruit subordinates, he had apprenticed under a master, learning martial arts and skills day after day, almost to the point of self-torture and perversion.
Close combat, shooting, firearms, knives—he had dabbled in them all. Because he was naturally intelligent, even though his physical condition was somewhat weak, his hard work had largely compensated for his innate deficiencies.
Originally, he was confident in his skills.
However, after just exchanging blows with Edward, Gilbert realized he had underestimated Edward.
Edward was incredibly strong!
He was so strong that even if Gilbert had used all his strength, he might not have been Edward's match!
Gilbert frowned, his jaw coldly clenched.
Gilbert's lips slowly curled into a mischievous and evil smile, sending a chill down Edward's spine, making him extremely uncomfortable.
His eyes, which were so affectionate in front of Evelyn, now were like blood-stained knives, filled with madness and arrogance, constantly provoking Edward's patience.
Suddenly, Gilbert's eyes darkened, and he lunged forward!
Edward's pupils contracted sharply, and he couldn't control himself, landing a right hook squarely on Gilbert's left cheek!
At that moment, Evelyn turned around, witnessing everything that had happened.
Simultaneously, Edward was stunned to see that Gilbert, whose lip was bruised and bleeding, wasn't angry at all. Instead, a sinister smile appeared on his lips.
He had fallen into a trap!
Gilbert never intended to hit him; he was just provoking him to make a move!
"Gil!" Evelyn's eyes widened as she hurried over to support the staggering Gilbert.
Gilbert ignored the burning pain on his face and tightly grasped Evelyn's wrist.
Evelyn finally realized what was happening.
She took two seconds to think and remembered something from her childhood.
So Evelyn softly called out again, "Gil."
Seeing Evelyn's momentary hesitation, Gilbert understood. His eyes welled up with excitement, and even the muscles in his cheeks twitched slightly.
Fifteen years of longing and yearning—could Edward understand that?
Suddenly, Edward's face drained of color.
He felt something inside him, barely holding on, shatter into pieces.
It was his heart, once again broken by Evelyn.
Had they become this close? The bond from childhood had never changed, had it?
What about him? From beginning to end, what did he count for?
"Edward, are you crazy? Gilbert just wanted to take me to his house to visit Mrs. Alexander. What did he do wrong? Why did you have to hurt him?" Evelyn supported Gilbert, glaring angrily.
Her eyes were filled with complex emotions as she looked at Edward: anger, helplessness, and, more than anything, disappointment.
For the past thirteen years, as her god, Edward had always been high and mighty in her heart.
But now, she increasingly felt that the god's radiance was dimming, growing further and further from the image in her memory.
"Evelyn, I'm fine. Don't be so angry," The murderous intent in Gilbert's eyes vanished, replaced by a gentle, soothing demeanor. "I completely understand why Edward attacked me. Everything he does is because of you."
"For me? Hurting others?" Evelyn couldn't hold back a cold laugh. "He's using the guise of justice to commit unjust acts. He better not say it's for me; I can't bear that shame!"
"Evelyn!" Edward's voice was soaked in bitterness, feeling as if his heart was being squeezed to the point of bursting. "I don't want to explain my actions or argue. I just want to ask you one question. What do I mean to you?"
Evelyn's breath caught, her heart spasming momentarily.
The surroundings were dim, but she could clearly see the shattered light in his eyes, accompanied by deep pain.
Gilbert stared intently at Edward's pale face, his sharp gaze like two spikes, piercing straight through his skull!
"If you stop bothering me and disrupting my life, maybe we can become business partners in the future. But if you remain obstinate, we can only be enemies."
With that, Evelyn didn't spare Edward another glance, supporting Gilbert as they slowly walked away.
Edward stood there, dazed, as if abandoned by the entire world.
He didn't know how long he stood there, the cold wind piercing through his body, feeling as if all his blood had drained away. The mist in his eyes blown away by the wind, only to gather again.
Gilbert's villa was the second largest in the entire wealthy neighborhood.
The largest, of course, belonged to Evelyn.
The entire neighborhood was owned by the Alexander family, so Gilbert could switch houses as he pleased.
Entering the courtyard, Evelyn felt quite guilty since seeing that Gilbert's facial injuries were not light. She cautiously asked, "Does it hurt?"
Gilbert's lips curved into a warm, radiant smile, though it tugged at his injuries, making the smile a bit stiff, "It's okay; it doesn't hurt much."
"Edward hit you too hard!" Evelyn was so angry that she wanted to bite Edward.
"Edward is a former soldier, having attended military school. It's normal for him to hit hard."
Evelyn's face changed slightly, "How do you know he was in the military? Did you investigate him?"
Gilbert remained calm, smiling faintly, "Edward and I are destined to be lifelong rivals, whether in business or in love. If I want to win, I need to know my enemy."
Evelyn couldn't miss the underlying meaning in his words, her rosy lips pressing slightly.
"If my mother asks later, Evelyn, you have to cover for me," Gilbert turned his face, reminding her nervously.
"How do I cover for you? Say you tripped and only hurt your face?" Evelyn frowned, finding it a bit difficult.
Gilbert smiled wryly, his handsome eyes filled with a doting affection which was only for her.
"I have an idea!" Evelyn had a sudden inspiration, taking a makeup cushion from her purse and handing it to him. "Use this to cover the bruise up. Do you know how to use it?"
Gilbert looked at her with bright eyes, shaking his head.
"Then I'll help you," Evelyn opened the makeup cushion, took some powder with the puff, gently patting it on Gilbert's swollen face.
Gilbert couldn't help but twitch his lips.
"Does it hurt?" Evelyn asked quickly.
Gilbert's eyes narrowed slightly, deliberately moving a bit closer to her. Her delicate skin was as smooth as milk, even the tiny, adorable hairs were clearly visible.
He couldn't love her more.
Their breaths mingled, their noses almost touching.
Evelyn could even smell the minty scent from his breath, mixed with the violet fragrance lingering on his clothes, which made her feel slightly dizzy.
"It hurt a bit earlier, but now it doesn't," Gilbert said, his eyes deeply fixed on hers, his lips slowly curling up.
Evelyn quickly stepped back half a step, nearly dropping the makeup cushion in her hand.
Although she remembered their childhood, it didn't mean their relationship had become any closer because of it.
"Let's go, Evelyn. If we delay any longer, I won't have time to prepare dinner for you," Gilbert said, no longer teasing her.
The two walked into the villa, disappearing completely.
Across the iron gate.
Edward stood alone on the opposite side of the road, his reddened eyes staring at the brightly lit scene that had nothing to do with him.
