Chapter 27 You're Becoming More and More Alike
"Oh my god! Edward, have you lost your mind?"
Eric was shocked!
Evelyn's face turned pale. Her already delicate arm hung limp at her side, and her smooth forehead was covered in cold sweat.
He and Edward perfectly illustrated two terms—one who pities women and one who breaks women!
Edward gripped and pulled at Evelyn's fingers, his thin lips slightly parted. The shock caused him to stumble backward.
"Ms. Brown, your arm is dislocated! I will take you to the hospital immediately!"
Eric was anxious and wanted to support Evelyn, but she coldly avoided him. "No need... I can handle it myself!" she said.
"How are you going to handle it? You dislocated your shoulder!"
"That's none of your business!"
Evelyn was thoroughly angry, her beautiful eyes glaring as if she were covered in thorns that no one could touch.
Eric froze and didn't dare to make a move.
Edward stared at his ex-wife, who was trembling with anger, and suddenly realized that he had never really known her.
In the three years they were together, he had only seen her smiling, gentle, obedient, and even somewhat flattering. At that time, Edward was dissatisfied with their arranged marriage, and the more Evelyn smiled at him, the more resentful he became, to the point of disgust.
Now that they were separated, that bright smile had disappeared from his life. But seeing her guard against him, Edward felt that she was so real and alive.
"Edward, stop thinking that you know it all..."
Evelyn took a deep breath, her eyes red. "I started working not to embarrass you. I just wanted to find a way out for myself after you abandoned me and a new way of living.
"I don't understand why you could decisively end our three-year marriage and marry someone else while I have to be restrained in starting a new life.
"Do you really miss me? No... you don't have a conscience. You can't stand to see me doing well."
Edward was shocked; his throat felt filled with gravel, and he couldn't speak.
Seeing him silent, Evelyn's heart sank, and she sneered, "Do you want to see me leave you in sorrow and pain? I won't do that anymore. Edward, I have been sad and suffered every day for the past three years, so leaving you is not a continuation of tragedy but a complete liberation.
"Don't come looking for me again before Grandpa's birthday banquet. I don't want to see you."
Evelyn turned around. The pain in her heart surpassed the pain in her arm, making her numb.
In fact, this kind of injury was nothing to her; she could easily put her arm back in front of them.
But Evelyn insisted on being in such a miserable state, on feeling the pain of all her nerves as if she were torturing herself, just to feel relieved.
Suddenly, she felt a warmth in her lower back, followed by dizziness.
Edward hid behind Evelyn and, without a word, carried her in his arms!
"Let me down!" she struggled in his arms, her cheeks turning red.
But the more Evelyn resisted, the stronger Edward's arms held her, his broad chest like a prison, not allowing her to resist.
Evelyn pressed against his chest, feeling the intense rise and fall of his chest. She even caught a faint whiff of the woodsy scent she loved on his clothes. It was a subtle and restrained scent.
She inexplicably felt like crying. How many nights had Evelyn sprayed this perfume on the bed, enveloping herself in the scent that belonged to him in her dreams?
She had once enjoyed it, but now, looking back, only grievances remained.
"I'll take you to the hospital. We can't delay a dislocation," Edward said expressionlessly, but his gaze deepened slightly.
"Let go of me, Edward! You never cared about me when we were married, and now that we're divorced, you have no right to touch me!" Evelyn was full of shame and anger, her voice hoarse.
But he ignored her, continuing to walk forward with his clearly defined jawline tensed.
Eric clicked his tongue and hurried to catch up. "Exactly! You're divorced, so why are you still fussing around like this? Let me hold you instead, Ms. Brown!"
"Get lost!"
"Get lost!"
They both shouted in unison, one with reddened eyes and the other with a red face.
Eric said, "Wow? You two are becoming more and more alike."
In the hospital, Evelyn was taken into the examination room while Edward and Eric waited in the corridor.
"Edward, you really went all out. You didn't hold back at all. What if you broke her arm?" Eric sighed and shook his head, sounding disapproving.
"How do you know she works here?" Edward looked at him coldly with his deep eyes, his clear brows and eyes hiding a hint of anger.
"I came here to grab a meal and happened to run into her. When I arrived, my ex-sister-in-law was working at the back door, putting in extra effort. You couldn't tell she used to be the wife of a wealthy CEO."
Eric smiled and said admiringly, "She's not arrogant or impatient, and she can adapt to any environment. She's truly the most unique woman I've ever met."
Edward tightened his grip on his fingers, his voice hoarse and bitter as he said, "Then your experience is truly narrow."
"That's still better than someone lacking the ability to discern." Eric retorted, hurting each other with their words.
Edward's eyes turned red, feeling a pinch in his heart.
"To be honest, I always feel like you'll reconcile with your ex-sister-in-law."
"It's impossible," Edward said throatily, his voice cold and firm.
"Clearly, you still care about her. Otherwise, why would you rush over here so urgently? Look at you, so eager to take advantage of her! Just looking at her, your eyes are burning with jealousy. And you say you don't care about her?"
Eric leaned against the wall, crossed his arms, and shook his head. "That's not ethical of you. It was you who left your wife for the person you love in your heart. You're even angry at Lily for moving on with her life. Are you trying to follow in Charlie's footsteps and have a bunch of women on each arm?"
"She promised my grandfather that we would officially divorce after his birthday banquet, so she should keep her promise."
"Lily agreed to delay it a few days for Mr. Wellington's sake. But you are using it as leverage to threaten her. That's a bit shameless of you."
"Mind your own business." Edward felt a choking sensation in his heart.
"I didn't want to intervene originally, but I really like Ms. Brown and want to be with her. So, let's discuss this. Can you please stop bothering her?"
Eric learned from Evelyn's words and became a bit serious, which was rare for him.
"Give up. You're not her type," Edward said angrily.
"Whether Lily is her type or not, she won't know until she tries," Eric retorted.
"Eric."
Ignoring his annoyance, Eric tilted his head and raised an eyebrow. "But if you change your mind before marrying Nicole and still want to be with my ex-sister-in-law, then I will voluntarily step back and not disturb her. After all, we have been friends for many years, and I cherish our friendship.
"But if you marry Nicole and continue to pursue Ms. Brown, let me warn you: I might stab you twice for that woman."
Edward pursed his lips, his handsome face clouded with coldness.
"Edward!"
A roar echoed through the quiet corridor.
Just as Edward turned his head, he was punched in the cheek.
